Wierd.

CatOnTheChair · 17/04/2023 20:09

This time of year, yes.
I wait til tesco have the big cardboard boxes of them for about £3. Then we gorge on them.
Ditto for Cherries at about £5 for the tray. That is truly a luxury buy!

CurlewKate · 17/04/2023 20:10

They're expensive (if that's what you mean by luxury) regardless of social class if they're in season. And if they're not in season it's morally indefensible to buy them. Also regardless of social class.

Newuswr · 17/04/2023 20:10

I feel like this is a loaded question. Anyone of any class can buy strawberries - it means nothing. Strawberries are not a sign of wealth or luxury. Surely just a preference of what fruit someone likes. Yes they might be more expensive than other fruits when out of season but the price hardly breaks the bank.

5128gap · 17/04/2023 20:11

They're not a luxury item in our house and I'm WC. Nor were they a luxury growing up, but that's because we did PYO in the summer and sickened ourselves with them. In the winter we had them out of tins on a Sunday with condensed milk, which passed for luxury in those days!

Blaueblumen · 17/04/2023 20:11

What on earth does class have to do with it Confused? Nothing!

Nobody should buy strawberries out of season - it's bad for the environment to fly them to the UK!

CheriseNuland · 17/04/2023 20:12

No but I’m beginning to think some cheeses are. 5 quid in M&S now! 😡Unbelievable.

carriedout · 17/04/2023 20:12

Leaving aside the class aspect, which I find a bit odd, yes strawberries are a luxury as loads of people can't afford them.

Blaueblumen · 17/04/2023 20:13

This!

gogohmm · 17/04/2023 20:13

Out of season they cost more, they are better for you than sweets, crisps, alcohol etc which many people buy.

I personally buy them or blueberries to have with yogurt and granola

sixfoot · 17/04/2023 20:13

Never ever buy them of out season, if you do that’s definitely luxury / unnecessary cost.

DisquietintheRanks · 17/04/2023 20:14

Well I'm middle-class and buy no more than a couple of punnets during the season. They're a luxury in my book.

AlisonDonut · 17/04/2023 20:14

I dug up 7 plants from under a hedge last summer, nipped out the flowers and transplanted all the runners. I had at least 80 new plants from them. I've potted them up and given loads away.

The first flower came out today, so I am expecting lots of fruit this year. So not a luxury item in our house, as they were free.

chocspot · 17/04/2023 20:15

Has this come from the recent post about benefit increases? The OP was pleased that she would be able to afford to buy strawberries for her daughter?

avocadotofu · 17/04/2023 20:15

I don't see them as a luxury item but I can see how they could be expensive for some.

NotMeNoNo · 17/04/2023 20:17

Keeping fruit beyond its season is basically why jam exists

Blaueblumen · 17/04/2023 20:17

It's like buying asparagus out of season. Flown in all the way from Peru, expensive and tasteless.
Why would anyone buy strawberries outside of the summer when they are grown locally and taste amazing?

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 20:22

Just to clarify I didn't say this. Someone else did. Tbh I know strawberries aren't as good in season. But the kids don't seem to mind.

CheeseMcKnees · 17/04/2023 20:22

DH won’t buy them out of season and will only buy British so yes, you could say that.

I'm sure children will happily eat strawberries from wherever, but surely it's the parents' responsibility to teach children about buying seasonal fruit and veg.

GlassBunion · 17/04/2023 20:33

I only buy strawberries in season.

It's something lovely to look forward to. Same as Scottish raspberries, Kentish plums and Kentish cherries.

Squashedpotato · 17/04/2023 20:36

I think they are a luxury. In comparison to a bag of satsumas which could do me a week, strawberries are more expensive and would last me a couple of sittings. I only buy a punnet once or twice a year for that reason.

hettiethehare · 17/04/2023 20:37

I only buy strawberries in season and yes, I do class them as a treat and a luxury. They are certainly not a core part of my weekly shopping list.

And I'm as middle class as they come.

DanceMonster · 17/04/2023 20:39

They are the only fruit my autistic child will eat so they’re a staple in my house.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 17/04/2023 20:40

Still not getting what class has to do with it op?
