Getting frustrated to be needing photo ID.

I don’t have a drivers license as I don’t drive. I don’t have a passport as I can’t afford to travel. I also never bothered with photo ID because I don’t drink or smoke.

This seems to be changing lately. Birth certificate and marriage certificates aren’t enough. More places require a photo ID which is a pita for me as it’s an expense I shouldn’t have to fork out for.

Yes, I know it’s better for security and stuff but it’s annoying.

Yeah I need one now.

I’ve been fine so far, which is why I’m annoyed. When I get the money (I’m extremely broke right now), I’ll get a citizenship card.

Try discount code FREEVOTERID, I think it should be completely free.

Soubriquet · 17/04/2023 09:43

No to the bus pass either.

Thanks for all the advice though. I’ll sort something eventually. For now I’ll just bitch and moan

Neither are proof of right to work though?

They are. Right to work shows that you are a British citizen or have the right to work in the UK. Birth cert + NI number fits this.

The guidelines are incredibly strict on what is accepted; these are listed on gov.uk as proof of RTW.

Einszwei · 17/04/2023 09:45

Even if you don't drink, I am surprised you never attend venues that require ID. Do you never go to bars or pubs with friends?

I would reccomend just getting a provisional drivers license.

Some of us are way past the age of being ID'd in bars. Those were the days.

CalistoNoSolo · 17/04/2023 09:46

It's astonishing really, that in this age of ID theft and fraud a photo ID card isn't mandatory full stop. It must be so limiting too, as OP is finding out.

DD has had a passport since she was 2 and a provisional licence since 17 and she has had to use one or both multiple times in her 17 years. How do you get to 35 without needing photo ID?

Of course they are.

Well…I’m 35 this year and managed to get this far in life without it.

What do you do when you are going for a new job? I have had to present a form of ID for at least the last thirty years.

Nope. I don’t go out. Haven’t since I was 20.

As mentioned above - birth cert + NI number is accepted right to work in UK.

L1ttledrummergirl · 17/04/2023 09:49

Yanbu.
I don't like having to constantly prove who I am, it's part of lowering society to the lowest common denominators rather than believing that most people are good, honest and decent. I know, Rose coloured glasses.

I think it's a horrible way to live, full of distrust and fear.

piratypotato · 17/04/2023 09:46

Of course they are.

How? You can be born here but not be citizen and you can have NIN but not be allowed to work anymore (visa run out etc). Neither show current right to work?

Get a provisional driving licence. Cheaper than a passport.

How do you get a job without photo id? Everywhere I've ever worked has asked for it

I've never needed photo ID for a job

Soubriquet · 17/04/2023 09:51

I’ve just looked into a provisional…it says I can’t have a new one as I had one when I was 16, so I have to replace one.

Bleh

So apply for a replacement then.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2023 09:52

L1ttledrummergirl So you'd be happy if your doctor, children's teacher etc had been able to gain employment without proving who they are and that they're qualified for the job they've applied for?

Yes, most people are honest, but many are not, and we all need protecting from the minority who may trick themselves into positions where they could harm others.

AlexiaR · 17/04/2023 09:53

Why don’t you just get a passport? It’s issued for 10 years and it’s the best form
of ID.

DorisParchment · 17/04/2023 09:53

@Chowtime I used to work at a large international organisation in Europe, and we had to hold up our ID card to get into the car park. I got all the way to my office before I realised that I had picked up DH’s pass instead of my own. It wouldn’t normally have been an issue, but I had to attend a very highly classified meeting that day, where they did scrutinise your pass as you went in. No temporary passes were allowed. I went down with a colleague who started asking the security man some inane comments about the agenda for the meeting. I slipped past at a distance, just holding up my pass with DH’s face covered by my thumb. The security man just waved me through - I guess the pass was the right colour, and he’d seen me often enough before. The downside was that it was a very long meeting and I was stuck there for four hours as I couldn’t risk leaving and returning. They have better access control now and you couldn’t get away with this!

Because she said moneys tight and they're best part of £100.

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/04/2023 09:53

Quite honestly I’m amazed that you can do so much without photo ID nowadays, when so much is done online. I was astounded when I applied for a bank loan online last year and didn’t need to provide any kind of ID at all. Within four hours I had £15k in my bank account and all I needed to provide was my name, address and DOB - hardly beyond the ability of a criminal mastermind.

A driving licence is significantly cheaper, more portable and also lasts for 10 years.

Lysis · 17/04/2023 09:54

Why does everyone always suggest getting a provisional driving licence? There are millions of people who aren't permitted to drive by the DVLA for medical reasons.

OP, YANBU. The Govt should stop trying to bring in compulsory photo id by the back door and be upfront about it.
