To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

MaknCheeese · 15/04/2023 19:51

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

6 of us, had takeaway last night, best part of £50 but it's a once a month treat for us as I work 6 out of 7 evenings and my husband is a nurse so he's all over the place with his hours

wooo69 · 16/04/2023 18:53

The last we had was with friends, so 6 adults and two children (9 & 11).
it cost £62 - Chinese

Well some people still have money, but a LOT of people don't. TBH I'd enjoy your take aways because the way things are going with the NHS we're all probably going to die very soon. This country is a shit show, brought on by the Tories. So yeah everyone enjoy their takeaways for now

We’re probably all going to die very soon? What of?

None of mine wear coats. They all own coats they just do not wear them. Im glad they all wear Nike runners so nobody will assume Im prioritising a chinese over them though....

This made me laugh as I was thinking the same. So glad my kids shoes don’t show I love a takeaway on a Friday night 🤣

No we're not.

We're not all about to drop down dead.

What will the mystery ailment be that kills us all soon? Hysteria? The spreading of bullshit? Lack of grip?

linsey2581 · 16/04/2023 19:07

We are a family of 4 and have a takeaway every Thursday costs roughly £40 we mix it up where we go. Chippy, Chinese or McDonald’s. Sometimes we go out to our local pub and have a bar meal.

That escalated quickly 😅

Does a Chippy only sell chips?

Panda89 · 16/04/2023 19:21

We have a takeaway once a week, family of 3. We mix it up between Chinese, Indian, burgers, wagamamas etc
Usually costs £30 ish

caringcarer · 16/04/2023 19:26

I'm in the West Midlands it costs about £45 for a Chinese meal for 4 of us or £38 for an Indian meal. Pizza takeaway costs us £48 for 4 enormous pizza that we have for our lunch the next day as well. I'm on a diet so not ordering any takeaways. We usually have a takeaway once a month. We go out to celebrate birthdays, our anniversary and a few other events.

GooglyEyeballs · 16/04/2023 19:30

Blimey £30 on a curry for 4 is amazing. Where I am a curry for two is about £45 and that's when we order the bare minimum and were small people!

We are all going to die soon because of the NHS?

Yes, the NHS is fucked and it’s very sad, but aside from pregnancy, I haven’t had any contact with the NHS in over a decade. I highly doubt I’m at risk of imminent death even if every single hospital in Europe closed tomorrow.

I presume you are not from the UK if you are asking that question? 😂

Just realised I didn’t actually answer. No, a chippy sells things WITH chips. Usually battered foods; but often they are owned by Italians and one near me does amazing pasta and pizza too!

Another here who makes their own 'takeaway' and finally, its just as nice, has taken years to perfect the prawn bhuna though lol.

If we get a takeaway, as there is 7 of us we have to always get different things, as there is 7 of us, so two have chinese, two have indian, and the last three have KFC lol. Comes to usually about £65 but my older boys contribute a fiver each.
A grocery shop for my lot costs us usually about £150 a week. And thats shopping savvy as hell! So a takeaway is a really rare treat! x

Can you share your Bhutanese recipe please?

RockyReef · 16/04/2023 19:47

We hardly ever get takeaways, not because of a money thing (although we could probably only afford to have one once a fortnight not once a week) but for health reasons. Once a week is a lot of takeaway! We tend to only really get one every 3-4 months, and that feels about right for us.

In terms of how do people afford it, well some people are richer than others I suppose, and even people on similar wages will prioritise different things. We spend a hell of a lot on ours and our children's sports and we live in a big property with land which requires lots of money in maintenance and upkeep. If we lived in a 3 bed semi in a town and didn't have expensive hobbies we could eat takeaway every night (but we still wouldn't).

Mmg34 · 16/04/2023 19:52

To be honest I sway from one to the other. I sometimes talk myself out of a takeaway as don't want to waste the money and then other times like this week we have spent around £200 on eating out or ordering in. Then other weeks I'll begrudge spending a tenner on a chippy tea. I think it depends what you can afford at the time. This week we've had a very stressful week, in and out of hospital lately so it's been worth it. There's been times when I wouldn't have spent that much on a month's shopping though so I can appreciate I'm lucky at the moment but also that it is my choice and not really any of my business what others do either. Though I do get annoyed by people I've come across who moan they can't afford bills or the basics children need but then they smoke or are constantly eating out but that is still up to them even if it is stupid.

CoffeeMama1 · 16/04/2023 19:52

That's a bargain! It costs us £25 for two! That's two mains, one rice and one naan! Same for a Chinese, two mains, one rice is still around £27.

IhearyouClemFandango · 16/04/2023 19:55

We tend to have a takeaway on a Friday, normally a cheapish one like a kebab (really nice ones, not drunk doner affairs 😂), fish and chips or whatever. Birthdays or other celebrations a curry or a Chinese.

For 5 of us a Friday night is between £35 and £45 depending on what everyone chooses.

For a Chinese, around £50, curry around £60.

Grips, or lack thereof, apparently.

hot2trotter · 16/04/2023 20:00

Once a month from our local pizza place.

2 x 12 inch pizzas
12 inch garlic bread
2 x large chips
Chicken shish wrap
Onion rings

Costs £32 and feeds 6 of us

restingbitchface30 · 16/04/2023 20:16

We used to get takeaways weekly. However since I’ve lost my income since having twins it will be a few times a year.

Rhaenys · 16/04/2023 20:32

9 inch pizza, regular chips and can of pop from a non chain pizzeria. It cost £13.25 including delivery.
I find Indian takeaways the most expensive. I can easily spend over £20 just for me. Chinese takeaways aren’t far behind.

VeganStar · 16/04/2023 20:35

Hadn’t had one for ages so we had a Chinese on Wednesday night.
curried veg
crispy tofu
mushrooms in garlic sauce
spring rolls
small chips
large boiled rice.
Came to £34 that was for two of us.
We were let down with the spring rolls. They sent sent the wrong ones. We ordered the vegan ones but they sent ones containing meat. Should have complained but we didn’t.

It depends what type of takeaway you’re getting, surely? My favourite is Lebanese, and it’s no more unhealthy than cooking things like tabbouleh and falafel at home.
