To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

@Backtobed Absolutely not the point of the thread but doesn’t this fill you with fear?! 😅 how do you know how much money to have ready for them coming to the door? 😅 I can’t be the only one that has cash + tip sitting ready and waiting 😂😂

@MaknCheeese We had an Indian last weekend - just DH and I. 1 Chicken tikka biryani, 1 veg pakora, 1 chips, 1 peshwari naan, spiced onions & popadoms. £36. That was collected to so that doesn’t even include a delivery charge!

LaMariposa · 15/04/2023 20:03

Fakeaway instead? DH has taught himself to make takeaway style Indian curry. Lots of blending of onions and a few other types of veg today to make the base, then he can make a variety of dishes.
To start with the results weren’t great but now he’s really go it sorted.
He’s also really good at a decent roast, and a few other meals.

We very occasionally have a takeaway, less than once a month. Too expensive.

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks.

😱😱

We spend £30 for two, so yours sounds cheap. We have one every couple of weeks.

That would be 2 bread, 2 main meals, 2 rice, onion bhaji and 2 side dishes. Enough for 4.

It might be cheap to some but it's 1/3 of my weekly food budget.

To simply answer the question in your title - some people have more money that others - simple!
people earn all different amounts, the COL crisis isn’t affecting some people in the same way it is others.
We have takeaway once a fortnight, but only for 2 people and spend £30 (indian food).

Oh and we can afford decent shoes as well as takeaways.

What did you have that worked out at only £12pp at wagamama? Is this four adults?

One child meal at £5.50, then three bowls of noodles I think.

LBOCS2 · 15/04/2023 20:05

Our food budget includes a takeaway for 5 once a week. We usually spend around £60 on it.

We can also afford shoes 🙄

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 15/04/2023 20:05

I think that's cheap! We get one take away a week and it's usually around £30 for 2 adults and a child.

FlyingPandas · 15/04/2023 20:06

We generally get takeaway once a week (I loathe cooking with a passion!) but I've noticed the costs rising steeply over the past few months. My DC love Dominos pizza but their costs are rocketing, and the local Indian/Chinese takeaways are the same. Takeaways have become extortionate.

In answer to your question as to how families can afford it? In all honesty lots of people can't. We are very lucky and have a high income so the rise in costs isn't a major issue for us. I don't really track what we spend on food and eating out / getting takeaways because we don't need to. If we had to budget carefully in order to manage financially then we would not get takeaways.

Hbh17 · 15/04/2023 20:06

How do people afford anything? They decide whatbspending they wish to prioritise. So I have never in my life had a takeaway, but I will happily spend much more than £30 on a theatre ticket, multiple times a year.

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 15/04/2023 20:06

£37 for 4 of us tonight. £7.69 at McDonald’s and the rest at the Indian. We have them relatively regularly.

And we can afford to buy our kids decent shoes too. Who knew!

cosmiccosmos · 15/04/2023 20:07

We mix and match with supermarket/cooked at home stuff. Waitrose Indian stuff particularly good I've found. So find dishes the takeaway does well and just order those. Rice cooked at home v cheap. Poppadoms with raita and mango chutney, cheap and easy to do at home.

Personally I haven't found a decent Chinese near us so we don't have that.

Whenisitsummer · 15/04/2023 20:07

Haven’t had a takeaway for approx 3 weeks as we decided to cut them out and generally eat better. Prior to that we had weekly takeaways-
cost approx £40 for 4 people .

Oysterbabe · 15/04/2023 20:07

Do you never eat out? It costs more when someone else prepares the meal for lots of obvious reasons. Paid £20 a head for posh fish and chips in a restaurant the other day. It was banging though.

SecretiveSquirrel · 15/04/2023 20:07

As a family of five adults now, takeaways can cost £70/80. We do it once a week
now. It has become very expensive.

LemonPledge555 · 15/04/2023 20:07

@MaknCheeese to be honest, I think for 4 people £90/week these days is really low, we’ll done on keeping it that low. 4 adults or some younger ones?

SittingNextToIt · 15/04/2023 20:07

Your question, OP, is a bit pointless no? How do people afford anything that’s non essential? How do they afford nails, spa days, the Nth activity for DC, takeaways, foreign holidays, hair treatments?

Surely they afford these by being in a position of having disposable income, through one way or another ?

skyglass · 15/04/2023 20:07

That's why it's called a treat! An Indian is about £60 for us which is half our weekly budget, we do it on special occasions where it comes out a different pot of money reserved for such things. Chip shop or McDonald's is the cheapest we can do for a takeaway, around £25, but usually opt for Dominos at £30. Maybe once a month?

Thebigblueballoon · 15/04/2023 20:08

Every couple of weeks we get one for two, ranging in price between £20-35 depending on whether it’s fish and chips or something more expensive like a Thai/Chinese. We always make sure it’ll last two days though, try to get more out of it.

seasawz · 15/04/2023 20:08

Our last takeaway was yesterday - not planned as we knew we were eating out tonight. We chose something cheap, £30 for several large pizzas, split between 2 adults and 3 young children.

Normally our takeaways cost £70, we'll have one every week.

DH earns well and we don't drink so more to spend on food.

As a side note my DC (3 currently in shoes) have their feet measured regularly and wear good quality.

Anoisagusaris · 15/04/2023 20:09

Or perhaps they earn enough to afford both a takeaway and decent shoes for their children?

Xelda · 15/04/2023 20:09

Last night the 3 of us shared half a crispy duck, Singapore noodles, chicken satay skewers and a portion of spring rolls- £40.50!

This. £30 for a takeaway for 4 is cheap

I have a friend like this. Very posh. Into opera. Once ordered a Chinese with him and some friends and realised it was his first ever takeaway 😂. He was trying not to give it away, bless him.
