To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

MaknCheeese · 15/04/2023 19:51

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

Christ!
Do you also believe that everyone on benefits shouldn't have a smart phone and all have 50" TVs?
Judgy and unpleasant

No. But to there are definitely people who spend money on takeaways whilst their kids don't have decent shoes or a winter coat etc

Maybe their utilities have been cut off? Maybe their kids have winter coats but just choose not to wear them?

So naïve. Had their utilities cut off.....that will be because they can't afford them... because they're spending money on takeaways instead?

00100001 · 16/04/2023 16:27

And I know the kids who aren't wearing their coats, and the ones that don't own one.

People prioritise different things.

Some people will smoke and see their kids be fed on cheap convenience food. Some will eat cheap convenience food so their kids can have fresh fruit etc.

I for one, buy clothes at charity shops, so we can afford to go out for cake and coffee. Doesn't make me right or wrong.

Just different priorities.

Sure, but it’s a minority, there are folks who take drugs, drink, whatever and their kids don’t have decent shoes. Being able to have kids doesn’t mean you are a decent parent. The majority of folks don’t do this.

Um, no.

I know a family (who both work full time, no benefits) who nearly had their utilities shut off - if they did not have children; they would have cut them off - as the COL increase had been crippling. Neither of them smoke, drink, do drugs or gamble.

Wexone · 16/04/2023 17:32

@TheHoover try looking on ebay vinted deopep. etc. zara even for its price has gone shocking quality. pieces falling apart and don't get me started on their sizing. I love my clothes and will look at quality over price. I have got some fab bits some even with tags on them second hand.

Pseudonamed · 16/04/2023 17:46

None of mine wear coats. They all own coats they just do not wear them. Im glad they all wear Nike runners so nobody will assume Im prioritising a chinese over them though....

Vinomummyinlockdown · 16/04/2023 17:47

In our area it’s now (for a family of 4 (and kids are 10 and 12 so don’t eat tonnes) -
£45 for Chinese
£60 for curry
£74 for Nandos
its all gone up a lot 😩
I prefer big juicy sirloin steaks for us all from the butcher and that’s actually a bargain now compared to the above!

Becgoz7 · 16/04/2023 17:53

We had Chinese Christmas eve and it was £45 for 3 of us but we did have leftovers. I couldn't believe how expensive it was 🙈

Ibizamumof4 · 16/04/2023 17:55

Never think they are worth the money have the odd chippy maybe like 3 x a year? Kids get a maccies maybe every half term. Guess depends what you want to spend your spare money on and how much you have !

creativelady22 · 16/04/2023 17:55

I changed my mind on an Indian last night for 2 adults and 1 teen when it came to £50!

Lozois99 · 16/04/2023 18:09

30 on a curry sounds like great value!

i got fish and chips for dp and our four kids and it came to £65!

takeaways and restaurants are struggling due to the rise in energy prices

VOTE LABOUR

Blaueblumen · 16/04/2023 18:13

How is Labour going to reduce the globally high energy prices?

Oops wrong link, but I highly recommend the pathia it's really nice.

The chicken saag looks lovely, we should get you to post links to all your favourite curries!
I agree that it seems like a lot of money when compared with your weekly budget and quite understand why you prefer to cook a curry at home.
I'm retired now and my children have left, but we very rarely used to eat out or have takeaways when our four children were at home, we simply couldn't afford it. For the same reason I always cooked from scratch and, like you, really enjoy cooking.
Our treats used to be curries, meatballs and homemade pancakes (from the Pauper's Cookbook I think), homemade fajitas, or gougere/yorkshire pudding with some sort of saucy meat or fish filling.
All my children are cooks, some better than others, but they can keep themselves alive without resorting to ready meals.

Are your children old enough to cook for you? Mine used to love deciding what we would eat, shopping with me and helping to cook.

Carriecakes80 · 16/04/2023 18:18

Another here who makes their own 'takeaway' and finally, its just as nice, has taken years to perfect the prawn bhuna though lol.

If we get a takeaway, as there is 7 of us we have to always get different things, as there is 7 of us, so two have chinese, two have indian, and the last three have KFC lol. Comes to usually about £65 but my older boys contribute a fiver each.
A grocery shop for my lot costs us usually about £150 a week. And thats shopping savvy as hell! So a takeaway is a really rare treat! x

saffy2 · 16/04/2023 18:22

MaknCheeese · 15/04/2023 20:03

That would be 2 bread, 2 main meals, 2 rice, onion bhaji and 2 side dishes. Enough for 4.

It might be cheap to some but it's 1/3 of my weekly food budget.

2 mains…for four people?! I think that’s crazy 😂

we get them regularly but not frequently. 4 of us, it usually comes to £40-£50.

fetchacloth · 16/04/2023 18:25

£30 for 4 is exceptional value.
The last one I ordered for 2, was £34 a couple of months ago. We did have starters as well but they only added about £6 to the cost.

Justenjoyinglife · 16/04/2023 18:26

We get a takeaway approx 2-3 times a month. Costs approx £40 each time, 2A, DS (11), DD (8).

our weekly groceries budget is £150 (all in) but do like high quality ingredients & cook from scratch for all dinners. We both earn decent money & we like to treat ourselves whilst we can

Your first post on this thread implies you think it’s the majority.

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks

CriticalAlert · 16/04/2023 18:40

Well some people still have money, but a LOT of people don't. TBH I'd enjoy your take aways because the way things are going with the NHS we're all probably going to die very soon. This country is a shit show, brought on by the Tories. So yeah everyone enjoy their takeaways for now

Comefromaway · 16/04/2023 18:40

which is funny becsuse my kids had plenty of shoes from Shoezone (awkward feet meant I bought what fitted rather than brands) & they lasted the exact same amount of time as Nike/Clark’s etc.

Pliudev · 16/04/2023 18:41

When my DS was visiting we had fish and chips one night: 2 cod, one chips and a veggie burger and chips. It cost just under £30 and I won't be doing it again. The veggie burger alone cost £6.50 which would buy 2 packs of Linda Mc burgers at the supermarket.
