To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

£30 on a curry for 4? That is great value!

we gad a curry last week, just 2 of us.

2 mains
2 rice
1 chips
1 naan

£26! Won’t happen again until Christmas

Muzzyarker7 · 15/04/2023 19:54

Christmas Eve. £74. Fed 7. Chinese takeaway.

CindersAgain · 15/04/2023 19:55

We paid £48 for Wagamama for four last weekend. It was nice.

We spend about £250 per week on groceries normally though (five of us).

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks.

OhMyCherriePie · 15/04/2023 19:56

Family of 5 we often get take aways.

GiltEdges · 15/04/2023 19:56

We have a takeaway roughly once a week. One of Italian/Chinese/Indian/Thai. It's only DH, DS(4) and I, but usually comes to £20-30ish depending on what we order. £30 for a meal for 4 sounds like an absolute bargain!

FrownedUpon · 15/04/2023 19:56

We spend £30 for two, so yours sounds cheap. We have one every couple of weeks.

itsjustnotok · 15/04/2023 19:56

Pizza Hut - was going to get a couple but the price had shot up by £10 so I left it.

EggyBreads · 15/04/2023 19:56

Takeaway is expensive round my way. About £25-£30 for Indian or Thai for two. We have one once a fortnight.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/04/2023 19:57

Take away earlier for 4 £39

Backtobed · 15/04/2023 19:57

Just ordered ours for tonight, don't know the price yet so will update once it arrives (hopefully soon I'm starving)

What did you have that worked out at only £12pp at wagamama? Is this four adults?

CatOnTheChair · 15/04/2023 19:57

Usually 30-something here too - feeding 4.
We don't do it very often - but we go out for dinner even less often! Maybe once every other month for takeaway, and once every 6 months to eat out.

SockQueen · 15/04/2023 19:58

Yesterday. Curry for 4 (but DC only 6&3 so have dal, a bit of rice and share a naan) was about £25. We get one a week usually.

Different people earn different amounts, have different outgoings and prioritise some luxuries over others.

DanceMonster · 15/04/2023 19:58

Approx £65 for 5 of us last night, although autistic child doesn’t really eat any of it. Indian takeaway.

loudbatperson · 15/04/2023 19:58

I would say £30 for a curry for 4 is very cheap.

We generally do 30-40 for a chippie. When we order curry it's normally between 85-100.

We don't eat it often so don't mind splurging, so we do indulge ourselves, but £30 for a curry seems very reasonable.

dietcokelime · 15/04/2023 19:59

Chinese tonight, £30 for two 😂

DanceMonster · 15/04/2023 19:59

And to answer the ‘how do people afford it’ question… we’re fairly high earners and have a decent ‘treat’ budget. It comes from there.

Flowerblooms · 15/04/2023 19:59

Just ordered a Indian for 2 of us cost £38.50

Last week we had a Chinese for 4 of us and it cost £54.

takeaways have definitely gone up in price just like everything else. We won’t be having another for a while had the last 2 for celebrations.

AlltheFs · 15/04/2023 20:00

We had one tonight actually- Chinese for 2 adults and DD was £33 although there was a bit leftover. Our weekly budget is £125ish.
It’s a rare thing here as we don’t live near any (rural) but DH was passing through town at the right time.

We couldn’t have one regularly and we have quite a high income (relatively-not by Mumsnet standards).

Whattodoaboutpox · 15/04/2023 20:01

We are having one tonight. Dc1, dh and I. Little one has chicken pox. My eldest is so excited as he said he has never had a takeaway before. I mean, we don't do them often but I was really surprised. DC1 is 11🤣

TiredandLate · 15/04/2023 20:01

We get 1-2 per week £25-40 each. But we spend less than some people quote on here on supermarket shops. I spent £53 in Aldi today for 3 people for the week, will probably spend another £5 on bread and milk on Wednesday.

annonymousmouseinyourhouse · 15/04/2023 20:02

I was £28 for a McDonald's last week and was shocked.

I make my own Indian curries and Chinese takeaway food. Much cheaper and you can bulk cook so it lasts a lot longer.

yogaoga · 15/04/2023 20:03

A chinese costs £17 for two of us with leftovers

FrazzledFirefly · 15/04/2023 20:03

If Indian for me and DH - £35 but I also put leftovers in fridge for my breakfast/ lunch the following day. Probably at least once a month.

Thai for me, dh and 2dc - £40 to £50. Maybe twice a year.
