To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

£27 for Chinese for 2. It did us 2 nights though. We normally get something once a week. Sometimes its McDonald's and sometimes its £27 of Chinese.

Our weekly shop budget is only about £50 a week though for 2 adults, a cat and a newborn

I'm always a bit disappointed by takeaways, they take ages and arrive lukewarm, so we have them quite rarely. I do get badgered for Domino's by the kids though.

Skyrim40 · 15/04/2023 20:12

Pizzahut has 50% off just pizzas but I think it might be before five o'clock or something. Uber eats has like a subscription thing so the delivery charge is alot less or free. Dominos normally has a really good deal too if you collect it.

OhmygodDont · 15/04/2023 20:12

We probably have a take away actual dinner once a week plus random mc flurry’s for the children.

They also all have branded trainers thank you.

Anyone who feels down about “shoe zone shit shoes” pay the £6 fee on m&m direct for unlimited free shipping for a year and you can pick up rebook and such cheap, I actually got reebok for £8 on there for the youngest last year so yeah 🤷🏻‍♀️. They don’t sell Nikes if you want nike go via their website direct. Often it’s cheaper and they randomly send out £25 vouchers too for being a customer.

To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

Because they have more money than you and/ or prioritise different things.
Do you really have to wonder how people can afford different things?

Same... dreadfully over rated...

But maybe we just have crap ones near by

We’ve just had a takeaway. 2 medium pizzas, pakora, kebab for £26. We used to have a takeaway every week, normally have one a fortnight now.

DeathMetalMum · 15/04/2023 20:13

Our go to Chinese is now £50 for four, it's around £46 something but we always tip. There's normally leftovers for one or two for lunch the next day.

We ended up at a Toby Carvery while we were away last week and was £80 for four of us including drinks and deserts for the kids only. It was a 'treat' budgeted as part of a weekend away but not particularly luxurious for the price.

bemorerip · 15/04/2023 20:14

£45 on a dominos for me and 3 kids tonight.
We afford it because we can afford it... your question is strange as it could apply to almost anything non essential!

13Bastards · 15/04/2023 20:14

Two of us had curry last night, £42.

JaneFondue · 15/04/2023 20:14

I hate cooking. But I also hate paying for takeaways. The quality has gone down so much. My fave Thai place has reduced the prawns and veggies we get in the curry, and it's just coconut milk with two sad tofu cubes floating in it.

Dh and I can both often cook better. But we get tired sometimes.

With Toby if you sign up and book via their app/website once’s you’ve left you tend to get an email a few days/week later offering kids way for £1. Plus they send birthday discounts.

Probably.

Oopsiedaisyy · 15/04/2023 20:15

We have a takeaway once a week usually, about 30 for me and either two kids or another adult.

We do love sushi, but have learnt to make our own because a good meal of that can cost around 50 and its more fun for the kids to make.

We eat well though, and tends to be mainly asian or non-English foods (had homemade korean beef Bibimbap for dinner, kids love it) . I do get bored of cooking though.

Yes, this.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 15/04/2023 20:16

A couple of months ago - birthday treat - £20 for the two of us. Chinese - a main each and a shared starter.

Hence, we only have takeaway about 4 times a year! Simply couldn't afford it any more often.

BonnieEye · 15/04/2023 20:16

Tonight £37
4 adults 3 children
Next to no leftovers but all full!

we had
chicken biriani
sag aloo
lamb bhuna
boiled rice
peshwari nan
3 x portions chicken goujons and chips

they give you complimentary poppadoms and today (but not always) a bottle of coke (don’t drink coke but took it anyway!)
Was delicious!

NoSquirrels · 15/04/2023 20:17

We had chip shop fish & chips for 4 last night, £33, and I think that’s shocking value, tbh - used to be about £20, I swear. DH persuaded me because I’m feeling ill and he CBA to cook (also, any excuse as I usually say no!)

If you compare it to the weekly grocery budget it’s not worth it. If you do it as a treat instead of a meal out, it’s good value. It’s also the Easter holidays and we haven’t been anywhere so that’s another justification, if one is needed.

VincentVaguer · 15/04/2023 20:17

We haven't had a takeaway for 20 years 😄

The first time my kids had one was when they went to uni

StormInaDcup99 · 15/04/2023 20:17

Just ordered
Chicken chow mein
Honey chilli chicken boiled rice
Decent sized portions. Enough for 3 people
£16. Northern ireland

thefamous5 · 15/04/2023 20:17

There's six of us. A takeaway generally costs is around £30 (delivery included in that).

We had 14 here at Easter. Ordered takeout pizzas , cost us £65 and had leftovers from that for the next day

JaneFondue · 15/04/2023 20:17

Gosh @BonnieEye that's really cheap. I suppose the value of a takeaway also depends on location.

Inthebathagain · 15/04/2023 20:18

2 tips

Cheeky Tuesday saves 20%. I got a set menu curry for two (breads, rice, main, sides, starter, poppadoms) for £18. It was so large, it fed us 2 nights.

Asda pizza counter...get them to cook it for you for 50p. Perfect large loaded takeaway pizza for about £5.

EasterIssland · 15/04/2023 20:18

I tried ordering dominos yesteday
small pizza / side and drink for 1. £17
minimum spend for delivery £18.
on top of that you have to pay delivery.
so around £22.

I ended up having few sausages I had at home

Kvetching · 15/04/2023 20:18

£96.70 for a Chinese for 4 last weekend.

(We did over order.)
