Had a run-in with a store detective

I bought some make up in my local Boots at lunch time. The self serve till asked me if I wanted a receipt, I said no. On the way out the store, my shopping obviously triggered some sort of alarm; hardly an unusual occurrence so I stepped back into the store, expecting a member of staff to approach me. I realised the item I’d purchased had some sort of security tag on, I assumed this had caused the problem. However Security came straight over, I assumed they would help me and de-tag the item. The woman asked to see my receipt, but I didn’t have one. I rarely request a receipt for small items. She kept repeating over and over ‘I need to see proof of payment’ and I kept repeating that I’d paid but didn’t obtain a receipt. In the end she said that if I didn’t provide proof of payment I would be detained.

I realise store detectives/security don’t have any powers of arrest, and also she was really petite and probably wouldn’t have been able to force me, if I had refused to go with her.

Quite a few people were watching by this point and it was getting quite embarrassing. Thankfully I then remembered that I’d paid using Barclays debit, and any transactions show up on my app almost immediately. So I logged into the app, showed her the transaction, she de-tagged my item and said I was free to go.

I think I’m just posting because I’m pissed off. What on earth would have happened if I hadn’t had my banking app as proof? Where would I stand? Surely failure to obtain a receipt is not the same as failing to pay, and most tills now ask you whether or not you want a receipt.

The moral of the story: forget about being green, always get a receipt

I would complain to the store. She should have been able (and willing) to retrieve you transaction and check.

Fandabedodgy · 14/04/2023 17:50

Don't Boots self service tills have cameras on them now?

Sorry this happened to you.

MeetMyCat · 14/04/2023 17:51

Don't Boots self service tills have cameras on them now?

@Fandabedodgy yes, they do. Although I forgot about that in the heat of the moment

Yes this is the fear when you don’t get a receipt. Other than showing a notification on your phone ( which I certainly get) you could leave your contact details and tell them to check their CCTV.

theseriousmoonlight · 14/04/2023 17:53

I've wondered about this too. I hate all the extra paper with receipts but will usually get one 'just in case'. Surely today's tills would show individual transactions for instances such as yours. (Although I have so many problems with self service tills I usually end up arguing with them!)

Also, many self service tills have a type of cctv that could be checked.

Limboingnow · 14/04/2023 17:53

I once came back as i needed a receipt the following hour or day and the shop assistant was able to track back and find my purchase

MeetMyCat · 14/04/2023 17:53

I assume they wouldn’t have had any legal right to detain me?

OP posts:
cornishmonkfish · 14/04/2023 17:53

I would complain. This is awful! What's the point in asking "do you want a receipt?" - if they'll detain you!

The security thingies are always going off in our Sainsburys for various silly issues. 😠 on your behalf OP. Complain!

She should have at least shown common sense. What a twat.

theseriousmoonlight · 14/04/2023 17:54

Ah, I seem to have cross posted with at least 2 people!

Comedycook · 14/04/2023 17:56

Yes this really irritates and bothers me. If the machine asks if you want a receipt it's therefore optional so how on earth can you then be questioned for not having one. It's outrageous.

Ktime · 14/04/2023 17:58

However Security came straight over, I assumed they would help me and de-tag the item.

She can’t just de-tag the item without proof of purchase. If you tell them which till you paid at, they can retrieve your receipt from there.

She should have asked which till, but I have some sympathy for them, I have seen so many people steal from self-service tills.

Needmorelego · 14/04/2023 17:58

You should have said "I paid at that self service till" and pointed to it. They would have been able to check straight away.

Windingdown · 14/04/2023 17:59

I'm getting a mental picture of Diane the probation officer in Outlaws.

I'd complain.

I think I said something like this, but she just kept repeating that I had to show proof of payment. She certainly wasn’t trying to help or resolve the situation

I have already complained to the store, awaiting a response. I’m just venting here. Sorry.

TangledBlue · 14/04/2023 18:05

I would have just pointed her over to the checkout I’d used and I’m sure there would be a way of verifying my purchase (CCTV or printing off a copy of the receipt).

It’s really no big deal. Security aren’t just going to happily de-tag the items of somehow whose set off the security alarms and has no proof of purchase.

Precipice · 14/04/2023 18:05

Often at the actual staffed tills now (not at Boots, argh!) in many shops they don't even offer to give you a receipt anymore.

HairyKitty · 14/04/2023 18:05

I wish we could all stick up for this. They have no right to detain you for not having a receipt. I believe that to have that right they need to know (not suspect) that several £100 of goods have been lifted and have reasonable grounds to think it was you.
Without this I believe any restraint is assault and any detention is unlawful imprisonment.

I hope someone who knows the rules comes on to clarify, but it really gets on my nerves that citizens feel like they must “comply” with what is effectively people in enforcement dressing up clothes throwing their weight around

Needmorelego · 14/04/2023 18:09

@MeetMyCat ok the assistant does sound a bit rubbish if she didn't take you to the till to check.
So hopefully she will get some training of what to do if it happens again.
One problem with retail is staff turnover is often quick so proper training isn't given.

itsmylife7 · 14/04/2023 18:10

My local sainsburys till automatically gives you a receipt as you need to scan it to be let out. (self scan )

I was once accused of stealing “the Book Thief” in a bookshop, when I’d actually just bought it in a different bookshop and walked into the shop carrying it (it was at an airport). The irony of the situation was lost on the security guard. Thankfully I had the receipt, but I do feel like they should apologise when they falsely accuse you and are proven wrong, rather than just grunting.

Daughtersandbristolian · 14/04/2023 18:31

Rather than employ extra security staff why not utilise the staff there walking about (hiding) or even standing there pointing to us to use self service. Drives me mad it’s either one or the other !

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/04/2023 18:35

Complain about her attitude, they’ll send you a voucher.

You have to remember that they periodically check people, it’s not personal.
