Had a run-in with a store detective

I bought some make up in my local Boots at lunch time. The self serve till asked me if I wanted a receipt, I said no. On the way out the store, my shopping obviously triggered some sort of alarm; hardly an unusual occurrence so I stepped back into the store, expecting a member of staff to approach me. I realised the item I’d purchased had some sort of security tag on, I assumed this had caused the problem. However Security came straight over, I assumed they would help me and de-tag the item. The woman asked to see my receipt, but I didn’t have one. I rarely request a receipt for small items. She kept repeating over and over ‘I need to see proof of payment’ and I kept repeating that I’d paid but didn’t obtain a receipt. In the end she said that if I didn’t provide proof of payment I would be detained.

I realise store detectives/security don’t have any powers of arrest, and also she was really petite and probably wouldn’t have been able to force me, if I had refused to go with her.

Quite a few people were watching by this point and it was getting quite embarrassing. Thankfully I then remembered that I’d paid using Barclays debit, and any transactions show up on my app almost immediately. So I logged into the app, showed her the transaction, she de-tagged my item and said I was free to go.

I think I’m just posting because I’m pissed off. What on earth would have happened if I hadn’t had my banking app as proof? Where would I stand? Surely failure to obtain a receipt is not the same as failing to pay, and most tills now ask you whether or not you want a receipt.

The moral of the story: forget about being green, always get a receipt

I don't think so...I didn't dump them and run. I placed them right by his feet, smiled at him and told him they'd have to put it all back.

You were arsey!!

dimpleton · 18/04/2023 09:28

I had this In Tesco's self service the other week - some meat had a tag on, and I'd tapped "no receipt required" leading to a palaver at the door! Why do they even offer no receipt option when this can happen? From now on, I'll always get a receipt and waste some paper 🙄

Yes you were arsey!

Dumping the basket by the security guard didn’t give him any extra work, it gave someone who probably had no idea you’d even been in the shop extra work by putting all your stuff back.
Working in retail really shows you just how horrible some people can be.

Oriunda · 18/04/2023 09:28

I sympathise. My local supermarket has an ‘email your receipt’ option which I usually go for. You still get a print out of your payment advice. Recently they’ve taken to checking our bags when we leave, and I had a hard time explaining that a)I went for email option and b) due to poor reception in the supermarket, the email hadn’t yet come through. They grudgingly let me out, but I was pissed off, especially as I had the payment slip to prove I’d paid.

My local Lidl has a paper free option and you get no printed receipts at all, but they’re all on the app. No problem with security, though.

This is now my stance. To hell with saving the planet!

Zero right to detain. You also have zero obligation to go back if an alarm goes off. To detain you they must have seen you conceal an item and then leave the store. If they did not see the theft, bad luck.

Yes. I meant to be

xogossipgirlxo · 18/04/2023 09:43

How appalling. Sorry this happened to you.
We once bought one of those "posh" sushi in Asda, husband didn't take receipt and it also set on the anti theft alarm. We just came back to the till and asked for receipt, all was fine. Some people really like to be in control, don't they 🙄

TempNCforthis · 18/04/2023 09:45

Why doesn't the till know which items are tagged? They can then remind you to take the receipt and get it de-tagged.

Needmorelego · 18/04/2023 10:00

@TempNCforthis it will vary from store to store which items are tagged.
Some products may come directly from distribution pre-tagged, sometimes they don't.
Some products get tagged because in some places they are products that get stolen a lot - in some places it isn't such an issue (ie nappies are tagged in some branches of Boots, some aren't).
I've just been in a branch of Asda. All the Lego sets have had giant bright yellow security tags stuck on the boxes - they weren't like that a few weeks ago. I am guessing the Easter school holidays upped the Lego thefts.
Other branches of Asda might not have had that issue so haven't tagged theirs.

Definitely had shoplifters does this to me. As they know with goods retrieved most shops wont waste time calling the police

piratypotato · 18/04/2023 11:14

Same happened to me last year, security guard was an aggressive dick and told me I had to go with him to the office. As if!
I told him which till I had used, and that he could go and check the camera on it and see that I had paid. I also said that if he touched me again (he had grabbed my arm) the only person being arrested was him. And I walked off. I presume that he looked and that was that, as nothing ever happened.

I don't have to prove my innocence to anyone, if I have paid for my goods and thats easily verifiable, that is their business to verify it.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/04/2023 11:18

Well, yes it would be a waste of time calling the police when no crime has been committed. Putting things in a basket and walking around the store is not theft.

I'm not a shoplifter

You might not be . But your actions scream shoplifter

Comedycook · 18/04/2023 12:11

Male101 · 18/04/2023 12:09

No...I was shopping "normally" and a jumped up, ignorant, thick security guard was following me around every aisle. Then I placed the basket at his feet. This action was not the action which caused him to follow me. He was following me prior to that.

It's not very difficult to understand

Needmorelego · 18/04/2023 12:12

@Comedycook you might not be a shoplifter but you are definitely what store workers call a "Giant Pain in The Arse" or other slightly more rude phrases.
You presumably had to go to another shop to buy your stuff. Pointless action from you.

Or someone pissed off at being followed around as if they were a shoplifter, when they aren't. More likely that, actually.

No they don't. I've worked retail. Nobody cares about having to put back some shit. Moving shit around the store is part of the job. Nobodies mad at her, its not like they have better things to do.

Needmorelego · 18/04/2023 12:14

@Comedycook if you weren't doing anything wrong who cares if the security guy was following you. I would have just ignored him.
Maybe he mistook you for someone else. As soon as you paid and left he would have been watching someone else. That's his job.

I wasn't a "pain in the arse" until he followed me.

Irritateandunreasonable · 18/04/2023 12:15

It’s actually their job to prove you have stolen something, so CCTV or 100% seen it with their eyes, and then call the police (who won’t come for such a small amount) - I would have just left and let her sort her shit out.

Because I refuse to give my money to a shop where I'm treated with that level of suspicion.

Needmorelego · 18/04/2023 12:17

@piratypotato I worked retail for 20 years. Putting back stock was a pain in the arse and could take ages.
Big supermarkets employ people whose sole job is to put stock back for the whole of their 8 hour shift.
All stuff that people just changed their mind on and just dumped - often in random places.

He obviously had a reason to follow you. You either looks like someone he knows to be a shoplifter or something about you made him suspicious. Either way in his head you've confirmed what he thought with your actions
