18 year old wages

My dc recently turned 18. Am I right in thinking her pay should have increased from the day she turned 18 rather than wait for the pay period?

Her pay changes from the date she turns 18, that is the law.

Rainbowmama2023 · 14/04/2023 17:33

Yes it should be from her birthday - not the next pay month etc

Namechanger1002 · 14/04/2023 17:39

So her birthday fell in the middle of the pay period. Pay day is Monday. Her pay slip shows the whole pay period as £5.70. It’s dominoes.

Presumably she is earning minimum wage? So if 17 year olds earn more then it wont necessarily increase? (Asking out of interest for my 17 year old who did brilliantly to get a part-time job and it has been relatively generous in pay rate)

Namechanger1002 · 14/04/2023 18:06

Dominoes paid above minimum wage - she was on £5.70 an hour when 17. She turned 18 last month in the middle of the pay period. They have still paid her £5.70 an hour for the shifts she did after turning 18 within the same pay period
we also regularly get free pizza, dough balls and cookies 😂

They definitely need to be paying her more than that, it's not even min wage for an 18 year old pre April never mind post 1st April.

blueluce85 · 14/04/2023 20:22

It may just be an oversight and they need to be reminded that she has turned 18

iwannascream · 14/04/2023 20:37

Your daughter should be on 6.83 per hour from the day after her 18th birthday and from April 6th 7.49 per hour. Advise her to talk to her manager or to give head office a call. If she gets the run around then she needs to gibe HMRC a call, they take a dim view of this an will gladly take issue with this. Many firms have been investigated and fined for not paying the correct pay rates

Beneficialchampion2 · 14/04/2023 21:19

It will be an oversight for sure, just tell her to ring HR.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2023 21:21

Wow. I thought min wage was £9 something?

Probz · 14/04/2023 21:24

My son has just turned 18 and is on £10.60 in McDonald's!

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2023 21:29

My 19 year old is on £10+ in a pub, but London.

RoseDog · 14/04/2023 21:33

In McDonald's it changes on their birthday, when dd turned 18 hers changed automatically and Ds will be 18 on Wednesday I presume his will be the same.

I can't believe they pay so low, Ds is on £8.60 I think!
