To try and get Ozempic even though I’m not obese?

Named changed and a regular user.

Being completely transparent here, I want to lose a bit of weight in a rush before a holiday. Hands up, I’m crap at dieting and it’s my own fault.

I am looking at getting a private prescription to assist this so that my clothes arent tight and all I hear and see is that Ozempic seems to have excellent results. I have researched and there are companies where you can order online by submitting weight /height and a photo.

My BMI is 23. So not overweight really. It’s purely for aesthetic reasons.

All drugs have the potential for side effects even if rare. Hardly worth risking just before a holiday.

Taking an unnecessary drug is always foolish IMO

KILM · 14/04/2023 08:03

Very gently - you want to inject yourself with a drug designed for people with a serious illness that has lots of potential side effects to lose weight for a holiday when you are a healthy weight anyway?
OP - trust me on this, from someone who has hated their normal body for years: Noone notices other than you. Buy the next size up and you will instantly feel more comfortable. You could have a similar effect reducing carbs, counting calories, drinking more water and eating more veg before your holiday.

Ohyeahyousay · 14/04/2023 08:04

I tried ... and was knocked back (I am on other meds for IBD, but totally in remission).

I actually rated the company for knocking me back, I got a very nice email explaining the risks of ozempic and saying that for me, those risks outweighed the benefit they felt I'd derive as my weight wasn't the category that was dangerous.

It was Juniper, so maybe try them, be totally honest, and see what they say.

I'm sure there are some dodgy providers who will just sell it to you, but I wouldn't inject anything from somewhere other than a reputable pharmacist.

Good luck!

EauNeu · 14/04/2023 08:04

No you shouldn't. Do myfitnesspal and stick to it.

How long have you got before you go?

TimeForMeToF1y · 14/04/2023 08:04

Are you wanting us to decide for you?

If you're paying for it and are happy to accept any side effects that crack on, it's your life

Flowerly · 14/04/2023 08:05

You have a BMI of 23? What an utterly ridiculous post OP. 🙄

Outandup · 14/04/2023 08:05

YABU. If your BMI is 23 then you are absolutely not the target audience for this drug. To contemplate taking a drug for those with a BMI of 30 upwards is not ok.

Bunce1 · 14/04/2023 08:06

Risky.

much better to crash diet for a week or two and get the same results.

MagpiePi · 14/04/2023 08:07

The side effects sound awful, but if you know what you’re letting yourself in for then crack on.

Maybe you should use this as a wake up call to make some changes to your diet and lifestyle so you are not overweight.

Fudgewomble · 14/04/2023 08:07

But you’re not overweight at all. Exactly in the middle of the healthy range. Get a spray tan and some new clothes for your holiday!

ShandaLear · 14/04/2023 08:10

Do you think people will fancy you more if you shave a point or two off your BMI?

Sparklfairy · 14/04/2023 08:10

It's doubtful anyone would prescribe to you, and I'd be wary of any company who would.

Do you even know how Ozempic works? It's not a silver bullet, doesn't melt fat in some mystical way, and many people just eat less because they feel so damn sick all the time.

Cherryana · 14/04/2023 08:10

What about the Cambridge diet.

I mean you sound perfect to me but it makes the whole thing very black and white- drink this/no food for a period of time eg 4 weeks.

I think to work with your bodies own natural processes for losing weight is better than injecting something you don’t need to.

She isn’t overweight though.

It would be better to spend some time on your self esteem. You are a healthy weight.

I am sure you already look good.

Why do you want to loose weight? What ideal are you pursuing?

Tarantullah · 14/04/2023 08:13

Just crack out the slim fast, not ideal but better than injecting yourself with something they don't yet know the long term side effects of for a lot of money. As long as you're disciplined you'll lose weight and it'll cost you a tenner or whatever.

I'd be careful with this - did it twice years ago and developed gallstones that required me to have my gallbladder removed. Apparently the gallbladder 'holds onto' fats when you do diets that severely restrict food intake like the Cambridge diet. The surgeon told me that most people he sees have this as a result of extreme diets / food restriction.

I used to be a lot slimmer until I had DC 3 years ago, I feel self conscious and miss my old body. Shallow I know. This will be the first time I’m going on holiday and in public in swimwear. I know no one cares and won’t be looking, but I care :(

If your clothes are a bit tight, your clothes are the wrong size.

The fact you're considering this just for aesthetics is madness.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 14/04/2023 08:21

Care enough to risk your long term health and healthy body weight?

Ozempic comes with a massive risk of rebound once you stop taking it. Weight rebounds often involve gaining more weight than was lost.

BuntyFayreweather · 14/04/2023 08:22

A big no. I am very overweight and have been told this drug has huge side effects. It scared me!
If you want a leaner look try high protein, low carbs and lots of water, no booze. Bingo you'll lose up to 7 pounds in a fortnight. You could try Jane Plan if you fancy having the meals sent to you. Add in a slendertone belt and you'll still save money on the £200 they will charge you for the first four weeks.

Effieswig · 14/04/2023 08:23

I think you really need to look at what you are saying.

Should I take a medication that has side effects and can make you feel like crap, plus you will still have to watch what you eat.

If you are no good at eating in line with your appetite and have very little weight to lose, it’s unlikely to do much.

A lot of risk for not much pay off imo.

Sidge · 14/04/2023 08:25

You have got to be kidding.

Fuck me we’re in a bad place when otherwise healthy people of a normal weight think Ozempic is the way to go to shave a few pounds off.

Whatever happened to just trying to eat better and do some exercise? I’m a HCP and am sick of the quick fix society we have become ☹️

Oigetoffmylawn · 14/04/2023 08:25

You can try, but if you are in the UK you'll be hard pushed to get it prescribed for you. Even a private prescription has a criteria. In the US it's much easier to get, but still tightly regulated in the UK.

Also don't underestimate the side effects or over-estimate the speed and extent of the weightloss. Yes, for some people it's a miracle drug, but it's not a quick fix for the slightly chunky.

Also, the medication lowers blood sugar, which can leave you lightheaded and faint.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

That is terrible. What a painful and permanent side effect. I hope you are feeling better x
