To try and get Ozempic even though I’m not obese?

Named changed and a regular user.

Being completely transparent here, I want to lose a bit of weight in a rush before a holiday. Hands up, I’m crap at dieting and it’s my own fault.

I am looking at getting a private prescription to assist this so that my clothes arent tight and all I hear and see is that Ozempic seems to have excellent results. I have researched and there are companies where you can order online by submitting weight /height and a photo.

My BMI is 23. So not overweight really. It’s purely for aesthetic reasons.

Sorry I quoted the wrong person - meant to be @QuizzlyBear about hall stones

Onegingerhead · 14/04/2023 08:29

I have a friend who is planning to do the same. Absolutely no judgement from me.
I wouldn’t myself do it because a) it’s pricey (for me) and b) I have issues with my stomach already (prone to gastritis flare ups).

doadeer · 14/04/2023 08:29

Goodness. Sorry op but I find this really sad. You've grown and birthed three children.... Your body is never going to look the same it's undergone a huge transformation.

manontroppo · 14/04/2023 08:32

Can’t say I wouldn’t tbh.

Dibbydoos · 14/04/2023 08:39

I was a healthy size 12 (5' 8") and fit (5 hrs a week at the gym) but i just couldnt shred the bits of fat on me, so I did the cabbage soup diet for 4 days. I lost 7lb. No side effects, nothing. My skin was fabulous too.

If you seriously want to lose a few lbs when you don't need to a medicine for obesity is not what you want.

I used to be a lot slimmer until I had DC 3 years ago, I feel self conscious and miss my old body. Shallow I know. This will be the first time I’m going on holiday and in public in swimwear. I know no one cares and won’t be looking, but I care :(

Your body will change over time, especially having kids. It will continue to change as you get older.

Rather than chasing something from the past embrace the you, you are now.

I don't know how much Ozempic is but use the money to buy a swimsuit that you look gorgeous in now. And belive that about your self.

Love your body - it is the only one you have - and love all the wonderful things it can do/has done.

Onegingerhead · 14/04/2023 08:44

When is your hols? I absolutely hate it and wouldn’t do it myself (tried, it was horrible) but some people seem to be fine. You can go low carb (or even keto) and really hit the gym.It will do the trick.
I hate low carving/keto with passion, so just hitting the gym instead. My current bmi is 22 while it used to be 19 so I kind of know how you feel…

BotCrossedHun · 14/04/2023 08:46

But surely you'll still have to cut out the same amount of food and stick to that, it's just that it's easier on the drug because you feel so full all the time. It isn't anything magic I don't think. So if you can find another way to feel full so that you cut calories, you'll do the same thing - you might find it easier than most people to do that, as you won't have the high blood sugar and cravings and so on that people with a disposition to metabolic issues do.

mynameiscalypso · 14/04/2023 08:46

I can't help feeling that this is really no different to any other behaviours exhibited by people with eating disorders. It's a very slippery slope.

PermanentTemporary · 14/04/2023 08:49

Sorry to hear you're feeling rubbish running up to your holiday. Your weight is perfect but your body will have changed, for sure.

My BMI is 31.5 unfortunately. I tried one of the non-prescription Orlistat pills from a week before my holiday - much gentler than Ozempic. As a result ive spent the entire holiday paranoid about finding a toilet, and (TMI) actually managed to shit myself in a really dramatic way at a national memorial. These drugs aren't benign.

I second doing low carb for a bit, get into doing some planking every day, and get comfortable clothes.

AngelinaBallerina122 · 14/04/2023 08:52

It has side effects, try harder again to diet and work out.

ChocChipHandbag · 14/04/2023 08:52

There is a Zoe podcast on Ozempic, Google it and have a listen.

Osina · 14/04/2023 08:53

Lots of users on the Ozempic threads are having really slow weight loss. It certainly isn’t a crash diet.

You are not just being unreasonable, you are being crazy.

Breadcrumbsforall · 14/04/2023 08:58

A few years ago I was on holiday and sat by a pool. There was a lady near me who was the centre of attention - I could hear some of the conversation and it was joyous, loud, fun. She got up to get something and she was one of the largest ladies I have ever seen, and totally beautiful. She sauntered, she owned her appearance and she was just stunning. She didn't care what she looked like (I spoke to her later, not about her size of course, just general chat) and none of her friends obviously bothered either. Your body will change, especially after having children. We can't all saunter like this lady did, but you are you. I don't think these drugs are right for you.

Unluckyfourpercent · 14/04/2023 09:07

Next has a load of tummy control swimsuits on their website. I would go for one of those and a spray tan. At a push, go and have a few PT sessions at your local gym and ask them to focus on core strength training - posture and muscle engagement can fake pound loss better than most crash diets (you can’t decide where on your body you will lose weight from)

even if the weight loss drug worked as quickly as you wanted it to, half way through the holiday you will have eaten/drunk enough to have negated it anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Butterfly44 · 14/04/2023 09:10

Not how it works!! You've been reading hype.
The drug only works with those who are obese and overeat as it makes them feel less like eating. Hence they eat less than they would. And feel sick, nauseous, on the toilet in the process (your kids will love that) but that's the trade off.
It will not melt your existing fat!!
And unless you eat thousands of calories a day, which it doesn't seem so from your perfect BMI, it won't work. The only thing you'll get if you took it is losing £££ and feeling sick and unable to do anything.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2023 09:17

My friend is type 2 diabetic and very overweight. He was refused it when he tried to get it, as he wasn't overweight enough at the time. Do I doubt a reputable company would give it too you.

latetothefisting · 14/04/2023 09:22

I've been on it op and wouldn't recommend for the following reasons

  • I was very borderline (bmi 30) and I admit added a few pounds to my actual weight when i filled in the form to get up to that and they still asked for a lot of proof including full body photo, photo on a scale etc -if you send in a photo of you as you are it's very unlikely they will prescribe it to you
  • despite it "working" for me as in it did reduce my appetite I really didn't lose much or quickly - I found it dispiriting because on the fb pages people were chatting about losing practically a stone a week whereas I lost a pound or two max - however when you realise you have to have a huge calorie deficient (approx 3500 to lose even 1 pound) I realised that the people losing huge amounts much have been eating huge amounts to start with

Even when I've had flu or whatever and have literally ate nothing I've never lost a pound or two a day as some people apparently were on ozympic!

That's also why so many people say when they come off it they pile the weight back on

If you are very overweight because you eat far too much and can use the time on it to reset your mindset abiut hiw much food you need it can be great
If like most of us you eat fairly OK but just have a few too many snacks and don't move enough then it really won't help much at all.

Although just want to point out that a pp is wrong - you won't be on the toilet - that's a side effect of alternative treatments like orlistat, alli etc

Ozempic works by reducing your appetite but doesn't actually do anything if you still over-eat - so it's more of a mind over matter thing.

Orlistat, alli, etc work by burning fat when you eat unhealthy things so you basically poop it out

latetothefisting · 14/04/2023 09:24

Sorry "burning" is the wrong term -not digesting fat might be a better way of putting it

BoneBrothByDayDonutByNight · 14/04/2023 09:25

Think about what you are teaching DC with this madness. “Hate yourselves! It’s normal! Thin is EVERYTHING (even if you are already- GET THINNER!). Take up less space!!”

Exactly this. It's not a miracle, you could lose the same on fast 800 or dukan or keto or calorie counting...... mediocre weight loss AND side effects, no thanks!

Peridot1 · 14/04/2023 09:45

As everyone else (mostly) has said no I wouldn’t. And I say that as someone who is taking it. But I was obese. For a long time.

You are not even overweight.

If you want to feel better about your body after it amazingly giving birth to three children I understand. But you don’t need a serious drug to do that. You don’t even need a diet. Try eating healthy fresh non processed foods with lots of protein and fibre and vegetables and fruit. Drink lots of water. Do some exercise. You don’t have to go to a gym if you don’t want to. Get out for a walk every day. Maybe try Couch to 5K - that changed my shape a lot when I was really overweight. And add in some toning exercises- there are lots of workouts on YouTube.

All of that will benefit you long term much more than taking an expensive drug which can cause side effects.

GiltEdges · 14/04/2023 09:48

Hands up, I’m crap at dieting and it’s my own fault.

And...

This will be the first time I’m going on holiday and in public in swimwear. I know no one cares and won’t be looking, but I care :(

Do you see why these two statements are incongruous?

Putting aside the fact that your weight is well within the healthy range with a BMI of 23, if you cared as much as you say you do about what you'll look like in swimwear, then you'd put the effort into your diet and exercise regime to lose what you need to (or, more likely, just generally tone up) to feel more comfortable in your own skin.

And FWIW, I have a couple of family members who've used Ozempic and it's far from a quick fix. Have you actually considered that even if it does work for you, you'll still look exactly the same as you do now, just a few pounds lighter? No change in tone, to materially change your appearance. So no one else will be aware, or even notice.
