To ask for the room to be turned down?

Currently on a uk holiday with DH and young DC. Staying in a 4* well known chain hotel. We are here for 5 nights total. Obviously it's common now to be told that your room will not be made up daily as it used to be in the past and I completely understand that is to do with environmental issues re towels, they did say that if we would like the rooms to be done then we just need to ask. However I do like the beds to be made etc when staying away from home. We are currently on day 4, so far I've asked twice if the room can be done. I said that I don't actually want the towels changed as we hadn't used them all anyway but I would like the beds to be done, we've run out of toilet roll, run out of clean mugs and would it be possible to have a couple more sachets of coffee.
The first time I asked it just wasn't don't at all. The second time I asked I came back to the room and new towels had been put in the room (which I specifically had said we didn't need) but none of the other stuff had been done.

We've saved really hard for this little holiday as we can't afford to go abroad at the moment, not that it's relevant but we are paying over £100 a night and that's just for accommodation not including parking or breakfast, so are we really being that unreasonable to request new toilet rolls, mugs etc?

I would complain to the manager in the morning because that is actually very poor service.

UnNiddeRides · 12/04/2023 22:47

I dislike having my room done as I prefer not to have things moved, so I usually get more toilet roll, drink sachets etc from a chambermaid in the corridor in the morning though of course that may be a question of timing.
it’s really unreasonable for them not to replenish what you need. I’d go down to reception & ask for loo roll at least. One of you will need it if not during the night then in the morning.

xbp · 12/04/2023 22:42

You can absolutely call reception to put in requests for specific service (as long as it's part of what they're offering), and definitely at a Radisson

But she didn’t call down, she went in person. And she wasn’t asking for special service, she was asking for bits and bobs of a standard room clean.

Ive never had to go in person to reception to ask for my room to have a standard clean.

When I call reception with special requests like more towels, or I need more tea- like you are saying that’s different.

theGooHasGone · 12/04/2023 22:49

A turn down service is different to what you're asking for.

It isn't unreasonable to expect the bins emptied, bathroom cleaned and bed made daily though, no. Really fucks me off that hotels (and lots of other businesses) just started using Covid as an excuse to do less for the same money.

I would too and I would be asking how they are going to compensate as 2 request have been ignored and there is no one available to provide a basic provision such as loo roll. Mention that you plan on detailing this in a trip advisor and Google review. I'm not normally harsh about service in hotels but I would be miffed if I had no access to loo roll or coffee

cestlavielife · 12/04/2023 22:52

Complain to head office tomorrow
Ask for a refund

Justmuddlingalong · 12/04/2023 22:52

Prices haven't dropped to reflect the downturn in services though.
It's almost like the pandemic made us all so grateful to be away in a hotel, that we accepted things would be different. The hotels realised they could cut corners going forward, while charging the same prices and thought we'd not notice.
I'd post an online review while you're there and experiencing poor service.

elm26 · 12/04/2023 22:53

Not unreasonable to ask for toilet rolls, coffee etc to be replenished and the bed made twice whilst you're there.

I'd ask reception again 😊

CherryPieface · 12/04/2023 22:54

Good grief OP, that’s really poor. I would tweet them as well an£ see if that helps.

Singularity82 · 12/04/2023 22:54

YANBU. I’ve stayed in cheaper hotels and the beds were made, toilet roll replenished etc. it’s the bare minimum.
Are you actually going to spend the night with no toilet roll though? Someone will be on reception now, why not call down and tell them you need it? Also complain to the manager tomorrow.

Bellavida99 · 12/04/2023 22:55

Raddison blu in Durham do proper room cleans every day still so it’s not radiation policy especially if you’ve asked. They’re probably just very short staffed but that’s actually not your problem if you’re staying there it should be done. Daily cleans are literally 5 minutes it’s pretty poor they haven’t been done

100% agree with this. The absolute cheek of them.

ZiriForEver · 12/04/2023 22:56

I don't see a value in making the beds, but I'd expect at least the bins and toilet roll sorted every other day without asking, or on demand at worst.
We just came back from 3* tourist hotel, and it worked exactly like that. If we stayed there for a full week, they would throw in a proper clean in the middle as well.

ohnonowwhat · 12/04/2023 22:57

Also to confirm the hotel does not have signs for the door so we have not put up a do not disturb sign or a please clean the room sign as they don't exist.

Are you sure? I've been in a Premier Inn when for some unknown reason you had to ask for one at reception (and of course they don't have phones in the room so I had to trek all the way to the other end of the bloody hotel for one. Which was then stolen by some so I had to trek all the way back to reception again 🙄).

Either way though I would definitely be putting in a complaint, certainly with the hotel manager and probably with Head Office too.

Singularity82 · 12/04/2023 22:58

@ZiriForEver see, I really do. I make my bed every morning at home- I hate coming home to an unmade bed. Makes the room feel untidy and the bed feels nicer and more comfortable to get into. It would really make a difference to my holiday! Obviously I just mean the bed making, I don’t mean fresh sheets daily.

Redburnett · 12/04/2023 22:59

Whatever the price it is normal standard practice to have rooms done daily. Covid gave hotels an excuse to save on this, but it is unreasonable that some hotels persist in not doing rooms daily. Part of the holiday is returning to a newly made up/done room. If you asked for the room to be done and it wasn't I would mention it at check out and leave an appropriate review.

ShowUs · 12/04/2023 22:59

I think having the beds made every day is a bit ridiculous tbh but emptying the bins and giving you enough toilet roll and coffee sachets should be a given.

I would pop out and get some toilet roll now if there is none left and no staff around and then take it up with them tomorrow.

CherryCokeFanatic · 12/04/2023 23:00

Discusting. Leave them bad reviews after your stay

If you do it at home everyday then why can’t you do it on holiday too?

It literally takes a couple of minutes max.

cosmiccosmos · 12/04/2023 23:02

Honestly OP this is terrible. The whole point of going to a hotel is a bit of luxury and not having to make your own beds etc. I have never been anywhere where you have to ask for this to happen. It's automatic unless you ask for it not to happen ie do not disturb sign.

I would have asked to see the manager after the first time it wasn't done. You should not have to keep calling down to get buts and pieces. Please complain and get a refund.

Because I shouldn’t have to? I go in holiday to get away from the every day drudgery. And I don’t pay £100 a night to stay in my own house.

IcedBananas · 12/04/2023 23:02

Yanbu I would expect this in a raddison. Could you speak to someone more senior and say what you put in your OP?

Soproudoflionesses · 12/04/2023 23:02

I hqve had this the last few times l stayed at Premier lnn and don't think it's on really. They blame Covid l think but you are paying good money and your bed should be made

@Mangogogogo sorry I probably used the wrong term in my OP. When I asked at reception I asked for the beds to be made up, toilet rolls and mugs to be replaced and for some top up coffee. I didn't ask for a turn down. Sorry for the confusion

What you’ve asked for here is perfectly reasonable for a 4* hotel. I’ve had bed made daily, clean mugs, tea/coffee replaced in a B&B.
Put a stinking review of Trip Advisor.
