What is ovulation like for you? Does anyone else get horrible constipation?

FFS this is new to me. I'm late 30's, could this be part of perimenopause hormone fluctuations maybe?

I've noticed over last few months my abdomen gets so uncomfortably bloated, constipated with pain that goes into my side and back, it actually scares me in case it's something bad (my mum had ovarian cancer) but then after maybe 2 days I'm completely back to normal.

I had a transvaginal scan of my ovaries before Christmas, as endometriosis is suspected due to very painful periods. But that was ok.

Always had a bit of pain around ovulation but never this insane full uncomfortable feeling and constipation. Is this within realm of normal?

I do also notice awful cravings for sweet and salty food mid cycle, again could that be hormone driven?

It is miserable.

I mean, isn't ovulation the time we're supposed to feel brilliant and sexy and fully energised?

I feel like shit! And definitely not sexy!

Have you tracked your ovulation so you know that it’s definitely happening when you ovulate?

But to answer your question, no I don’t have any symptoms like that at all.

Bacchus23 · 12/04/2023 20:18

Worst part of my cycle and my sister’s as well. It’s awful And it doesn’t matter what I do or don’t eat, I exercise daily so it’s not that. My diet is pretty good. Hormones can be hellish

Sorry you are having this. No, never had constipation, or bloating or the symptoms you describe at anytime in my cycle! I'm mid 40's now and do suspect peri starting though.

Did they only do an ultrasound to rule out endo? Might be wrong, but I thought that only a camera (laparoscopy) could check whether you have endo in certain other areas- the outside of the uterus, bowels etc. Have you had any blood tests done to check hormones, thyroid, anaemia, diabetes etc? I'd be asking for more testing. Sadly though, unless you are TTC- sometimes they will do very little testing!

Is the pain always on 1 side, or switches each month? It does sound hormonal though.

I definitely had a couple of cycles of being very bloated around ovulation, but that seems to have calmed down over the last year or so. I do still tend to be a bit bloated around ovulation, but not painfully now.

Like you I started to notice mid cycle weirdness towards the end of my thirties/early forties, but it has settled now (mid forties). Though I can sometimes still tell which ovary is producing an egg because it hurts when I prod that side! I probably shouldn't prod.

Horrendously painful and leaves me with a painful bladder for two weeks. Have IBS anyway so difficult to tell what causes constipation.

RunnyPaint · 12/04/2023 20:54

I get the same type of feeling of constipation when I ovulate! I thought it was just me. I'm not always constipated, but the pain/discomfort presents in the same way to me. Interestingly, that was also how I experienced the early stages of labour, so perhaps it's transferred pain/sensation. It doesn't switch sides either. It sounds like you get it worse and for longer than me, as I only get it for a few hours each month. This has been going on most months since my mid-30s and I'm now 48. Didn't help when we were TTC as, although I would know it was the right time, I would not feel like DTD!

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 12/04/2023 21:17

I don't get constipated but I do get bloated and I do have horrific pain on my right side from the front to the back like someone is stabbing me. Horrible.

ScarlettDarling · 12/04/2023 21:22

I get bloated and achey for up to a week leading up to ovulation. Not really constipated but very uncomfortable. I need to go and speak to a gp about it I think. It makes me terribly anxious every month.

DorritLittle · 12/04/2023 21:27

I had this last year for four months exactly, then it went. Always for 2 days. I can only imagine that my digestion got messed up after having Covid and that it was IBS exacerbated by hormones but I have no idea and the GP wasn’t that interested. I got the impression they thought it was peri. I would tell yours though.
