How long does it take for memory to return after a stroke?

Posted on aibu for traffic.

Dad has recently had a stroke. His memory is the thing that seems to have been impacted the most (so far - awaiting mri results for a full analysis).

His short term memory is weak. Will it ever return? He's currently on the stroke ward receiving treatment.

Thanks in advance

Nobody can really say it could fluctuate,my mum has had a couple of mini strokes, and her memory is hit and miss .tbh.

I can’t help sorry. Just wanted to wish your dad all the best. My dad had a stroke a few years ago, 4 or so weeks in his recovery was as good as it was going to get if that helps. His short term memory wasn’t affected. His was more speech and walking. He went from being unable to walk at all, to getting about reasonably well with a cane.

After a trike symptoms can get worse for a couple of weeks before they get better. It can take a few weeks or a few months to get back to the best that they’ll be.

It sounds like it’s very early days for your dad so there is still hope it will improve. Best of luck

Thanks. His walking/speech and physical mobility seems fine. Just the memory and ability to comprehend what someone else is saying is what seems to have been impacted the most. It's such a scary experience

One of the best things a nurse said to us is that a stroke is a brain injury and it's bruised at first and needs time to heal - helped me when DH was recovering and helped me ground him when he was feeling down about fatigue
