Do journalists contact you on here?

I've just been contacted by a journalist for the second time on here.

The last time was six months ago. I was contacted about a thread I wrote, by someone from a UK publication. She wante to write an article and get my opinion on something.

Now I've been contacted again this week.

A couple of days ago I started a thread about the Dalai lama. A journalist from the US contacted me and asked me to write an essay about my experiences with the Dalai lama. An essay! She said something I would write the essay but she would edit it and it would be under her name. I was a bit taken aback and I replied "would I get paid for that?". I got no reply. I presume I wouldn't. But I can't imagine why she would think I would take the time to write a full essay on the Dalai lama!

It's a little bizarre. It just goes to show that this forum is crawling with worldwide journalists.

Do you ever get contacted by journalists on here?

report the PM to MNHQ. Journalists aren't meant to message you, no. I think it specifically says this.

AutisticLegoLover · 12/04/2023 11:14

Cheeky sods! Report them
Every time

Dracuuule · 12/04/2023 11:16

Yes I was asked if I was willing to be interviewed for an article by a journalist.

Exhibity · 12/04/2023 11:17

Report them

Whatsthisthing · 12/04/2023 11:18

I have been. It was several years ago on another username when I made a comment about how filthy my car was - the shame 😂

Mooshamoo · 12/04/2023 11:19

I nearly laughed! I'm not sitting down and writing a full length essay about the Dalai lama for her publication, out of the kindness of my heart!

That is one lazy arse journalist op

Pixiedust1234 · 12/04/2023 11:22

You can report your PM and they will get banned probably.

I don't think I would be bothered by contact if they asked for permission to use your thread but what the cheekery fuckery wanting you to write the article and they put it under their name with presumably zero credit to you!!

Wonder if its actually school homework rather than journalism?

OneCup · 12/04/2023 11:24

My posts must be really boring as I was never asked anything ;)

She told me her name and the name of the publication and when I look up the publication, it does say that she is an associate editor.

But yeah it could be anyone using her name if they wanted to.

My essay on the Dalai llama would be:

I went to see him.
I thought he was good
Turns out he was bad.
The end.

I'm a journalist but that's not why I am on here, I'm here as a parent and just happen to be a journalist. I do often see posts where I think "that experience/ anecdote would be perfect for the article I'm writing about children with SEND/ issues with nurseries/ schools etc" but I don't contact people because I know it isn't allowed. I have once or twice posted in the special section for journalists, asking for experiences.

AlwaysWorriedAboutEverything · 12/04/2023 11:48

I hardly ever post on MN as I prefer to just read but even I have been contacted by one about a post I made like a year ago. It wasn't even about anything interesting so I don't know what that was about.

WhatTheHeckyPeck · 12/04/2023 11:55

I have under a different username. I won't say what it was about (easily found on Google and I don't want to be linked with that username anymore). There were lots of PM's from journalists. I didn't respond to any and blocked the lot of them. As if I was ever going to give them any details about me, the twats.

Otherlifeform · 12/04/2023 12:09

I have when I posted something about my DD’s school. I just told them I wasn’t interested.

Mangogirl12 · 12/04/2023 12:13

So the lazy leech wanted you to write an essay for which she'd take full credit? Cheeky Fucker isn't she?! Got some nerve that's for sure!

HotSauceNow · 12/04/2023 12:15

I was once. It was a sensitive topic too. I was appalled and reported it.

Hazelnuttella · 12/04/2023 12:16

No, never. Obviously my posts aren’t salacious enough!

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/04/2023 12:38

Yes, years ago I wrote in a thread about my past experiences as a hoarder and how I broke that cycle. Someone from a production company kept messaging me about appearing on a hoarders show. I told her my house is spotless and she said "We can organize the set dressing". Vultures.

OhMyCherriePie · 12/04/2023 12:39

Yes under an old name just once though

Devoutspoken · 12/04/2023 12:42

I'm not a journalist but not sure why everyone gets so up in arms about them. I couldn't give a fig about them.

I think you should send that to her. She wants you to write an essay which she will ‘edit’ and publish under her name??? Bloody cheek!

Findyourneutralspace · 12/04/2023 12:43

That’s not good journalistic practice. If they wanted case studies there are proper channels to go through and fees should be discussed.

WinnieFosterFights · 12/04/2023 12:45

There are journalists and there are 'journalists'. I'd assume the one asking for an essay isn't a real journalist. A decent publication wouldn't do what they did.

CatherineCawoodsScarf · 12/04/2023 12:48

I posted about a skin problem and got asked if I wanted to go on a TV programme about it! Funnily enough, no. I didn’t realise I should have reported it though.
