To think a grown woman....

Should be able to know how to operate a dishwasher?
New colleague didn't know how to do it. She stacked it correctly but was then standing around looking stumped. I had to intervene and help.
She is 41!

OP posts:
PissedOffWithDailyMail · 12/04/2023 09:57

I've owned and regularly used a dishwasher for 30 years. We got a new one recently, and I had to check the manual before using it because it's got a "SpeedPerfect" button, and I had no idea what that was for.

I think the OP has had a very limited life if she gets excited over the concept of someone encountering an unfamiliar dishwasher.

SVRT19674 · 12/04/2023 09:58

I can operate my dishwasher fine, when I got to my mum´s new one I couldn´t find the on button. Stacked it, selected the programme and put in the tablet of detergent but totally stumped when it wouldnt work. The button was inside the door, you had to open it, press it then close it again...

ReadersD1gest · 12/04/2023 10:00

Don't bother putting this skill on your cv, op, it's not as impressive as you think.

Skybluepinky · 12/04/2023 10:00

Not everyone has used a dishwasher!

TempyBrennan · 12/04/2023 10:01

Poor bloody woman working with you.

Scoobydoobywho · 12/04/2023 10:03

I was 47 when we got our first dishwasher. Without instructions I'd of had no idea how to work the thing.
You are just being judgemental.

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/04/2023 10:03

I've only used one since last year - I still need help if my partner is away (as she usually does the dishwasher, which we only began using 5 years ago). I'm 64...

Judging people on this sort of thing is not big and it's not clever.

LouisCatorze · 12/04/2023 10:06

It's an arrogant thing to say, OP.

Loads of people don't have dishwashers.

Would you be able to necessarily figure out how to use any given product you've not previously used (such as a pressure cooker), without instructions to hand?

notafruit · 12/04/2023 10:07

I'm 53 and have never used a dishwasher so wouldn't have a clue. No room in my kitchen for one, as much as I'd probably like one.
And when I bought this house, at 29 I had no idea how to operate a washing machine or the central heating, as I came from a house with a twin tub and no central heating. DH had to show me. Skills he appears to have lost over the years...

Workplaces other than restaurants have dishwashers. As do holiday cottages, MIL’s house, friends’ houses.

Very weird thread based on people who clearly don’t go out much.

And every single one has different settings, eco settings and drawers for tabs/ rinse aid etc. Not sure I really know. I press whatever looks right.

I agree with dishwashers using less water than hand washing if you have a family. The comparison tests all seem to be with 12 place settings. I’d only be able to do one load a week.
I’ve just done the washing up. I measured the water by using milk containers (4 pints 2.2lts ). Rinsed as I went which didn’t get above the washing up bowl. So 6 litres totals.
It was the first washing up since Sundays big roast as there’s only me and DS as I’m out loads.😁

yano · 12/04/2023 10:14

People don't know what they don't know. You can choose to explain how it works, or you can choose to be a dick.

Nothing shameful about being an adult who hasn't used a dishwasher before, or who is figuring out how to use an unfamiliar one. More shameful to be an adult who tries to make herself feel better by judging somebody for something so inconsequential.

TragicMuse · 12/04/2023 10:15

Yup, YABU

I don't have one, never have, and I simply don't care abound knowing how to work one.

I do have a degree, a postgrad and a responsible job. I'm 58.

So what if I can't operate an appliance I've never used before?

You're being a judgey dick.

I suspect that comparisons don’t adequately factor in the cost of production and import of the machine. I agree dishwashers are more hygienic but how much that matters in a domestic setting I don’t know.

Mari9999 · 12/04/2023 10:26

Maybe she comes from a home and maintains a home where the help runs the dishwasher.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 12/04/2023 10:28

Ted27 · 11/04/2023 22:39

never owned or used a dishwasher

also never owned an induction hob/oven either and had a very difficult time trying to work it out in a holiday flat last year.

I can usually fumble my way around making things work, but a hob I had in a holiday cottage was beyond my comprehension even with a booklet. We ate out every day because even my engineer partner couldn't figure it out.

I was once presented with an industrial dishwasher, I took an hour to read the instructions, managed to get it to do its job, could not figure out how to empty the water at the shift end.

FWIW microwaves usually have a default setting of 30 seconds, press that until you have 5 minutes or whatever. Not all microwaves, just most.

AgrathaChristie · 12/04/2023 10:28

I had to Google how to use the electric hob in a holiday cottage. Never used one before, always gas.
I’m sure there’s other things I don’t know how to use as I’ve never had cause to,

CrunchyCarrot · 12/04/2023 10:30

I've never had a dishwasher so probably would be stumped too! However, I could learn. I had to learn how to use a video recorder. How to use a smartphone, how to use a computer, many things. Age is no indicator of what a person does or doesn't know how to do. They simply need to learn how, not be judged for it!

Marblessolveeverything · 12/04/2023 10:30

Of course I forgot the annual CPD we all do to learn how to use every single version of every appliance...........

Honestly, have some manners and kindness!

MaryJean87 · 12/04/2023 10:33

Age is irrelevant. I'm 35 and have never owned a dishwasher. Some machines are complicated. In a past workplace there was an industry type washing machine with an open top lid that used to confuse the life out of me. I'd probably judge you more for starting a thread about this.

prettybluebell · 12/04/2023 10:34

Why are you being so rude? You should know this but not all dishwashers works the same. Just show her how to use it without judging her. Not everyone has a dishwasher either.

Crazyshihtzulady · 12/04/2023 10:38

Seems like you're looking for things to pick on about her....Very nasty.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2023 10:43

The don’t all operate the same way. When I got a new one it took me a while to get it to the settings I wanted.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2023 10:45

And yes, like others, when I was presented with an induction hob, never having used one and no instructions provided at a holiday cottage, I too had to muddle my way through to get it doing what I needed.

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/04/2023 10:46

Just got one. Stood and looked at it for at least 10 minutes before I realised the plug wasn't switched on

LookItsMeAgain · 12/04/2023 10:50

I've had many a dishwasher. Some have the tablet/powder dispenser below the top tray, most have it built into the door. Also, with the different types of wash available (heavy dirty/pre-wash/eco wash/plate warmer) perhaps she didn't know which to select.

Give the woman a break or hand her the printout of the user guide that you used!
