I have just seen this on another thread (this is not a TAAT). It resonated with me so much I felt it deserved its own thread

@tribpot

Abuse thrives on secrecy, doesn't it?

It really really does, abusers don't want people to know what they do, they abuse in quiet places, in private and alone

It was fed into by the victim being blamed for 'causing trouble', 'making a scene' and a common one in my day was 'bringing police to the door'. It's as important as ever that girls aren't bought up to people please and not make a fuss etc. I hate when people think that historic abuse should be left in the past. All abuse should be called out and the shame put on the perpetrator.

Absolutely. Don't open that can of worms etc.

Another reason I hate the fact that some charities, (mermaids), help children hide from their parents if they are questioning gender etc

There are certain micro cultures & in my area it's very religious & even now I think there would be a tendency to sweep things under the carpet.
