Bruising on child legs with no explanation

I’m really worried about my daughters legs they have bruising on them. I am of course going to call my GP in the morning but right now I’m going crazy googling and finding all sorts of diseases it could be a sign of. Please tell me if you’ve experienced similar with your kids please. She has been with me all week so no chance of anyone doing this to her. She’s doesn’t remember how it happened and it doesn’t hurt when I touch it. What could be the cause?

2 bruises on both legs in the same position shows that's she's probably knocked them on something. You can see that it was probably done at the same time!
Definitely not random bruises or signs of leukaemia!
I have lots of random bruises on my legs and forget where I get them from then realise when I walk into a table, chair, door again I think.... that's how I get these random bruises!
Most active young children have the odd bruise on their legs!

gogohmm · 11/04/2023 08:00

I have found unexplained bruises on me or leg pains only on to find a logical explanation, my hip pain did instance is my habit of walking into a certain door knob daily, so much i barely realise. Get it checked out and likely it's from an accident

Daisyismynameorisnot · 11/04/2023 08:02

I had the auto immune disorder that you've likely read about and the bruising was severe for that (very dark heavy black bruising). This could be low iron. My advice is to see a GP for this as there could be something behind it like iron.

There’s no table here at the moment. No coffee or dining table as we’ve just moved in. Only bed in her room, sofa in lounge.

I'm worried because it might be some kind of auto-immune disorder or lukemia (sorry spelling). I know someone in DH’s extended family who kept getting unexplained bruises. Also it’s not purple as you can see in pictures it’s red - could this mean bleeding under the skin.

That’s literally what a bruise is - bleeding under the skin! As a teacher, I’ve seen my fair share of bruising on legs - it’s incredibly common because despite you saying she couldn’t possibly have knocked them, that’s what will have happened. Banging them on the side of the bath, jumping onto a chair, getting on and off a bike… there are many many ways that children bruise on their shins.

SeaDee · 11/04/2023 08:04

I've had bruises like that when I've left the dishwasher door open and forgotten about it and walked into it

OP I share this image intermittently. It's my son's legs when he had immune thrombocytopenic purpura. The alternative diagnosis was leukaemia which, thank heavens, it wasn't. The bruising pooled around his ankles from gravity. This image was taken a few days later when it was fading.

I have this also but my bruising was different. I hope your son is well xx

user1496146479 · 11/04/2023 08:08

My DD also 7, has bruises all over both shins, no idea how!

itsgettingweird · 11/04/2023 08:10

I'm 42 and my shins always look that that 🫣

Some people just manage to catch themselves regularly without even knowing it.

The underside of my forearms are just as bad 🫣🤣🤷‍♀️

HippyChickMama · 11/04/2023 08:18

This is one of dd's shins, she's 9 and she did this 5 days ago when her foot slipped off the pedal of her bike and it hit her shin as it spun round. She is constantly covered in these types of bruises on her shins and knees from bike riding, climbing, running up the stairs and slipping over, running into things because she is incapable of walking, whacking her scooter into her legs by picking it up too fast by the handles etc.
Totally normal in a child of this age and, as a hcp, I would not be worried at all seeing this on an active child and wouldn't be overly concerned if they couldn't remember how it happened if they seemed otherwise happy and healthy

marrymeadam · 11/04/2023 08:30

I bruise so easily, Every one says i am like a peach, i look at something wrong and have a bruise. That combined with being clumsy means I look like that all the time! I never remember where they are from and bruises like your DDs dont hurt so are even harder to remember the cause

arethereanyleftatall · 11/04/2023 08:38

Through my job, I see about 300 kids legs per week. It would be unusual to see them without a bruise.

On its own, with no other symptoms, it would be bonkers to take a dr appointment over this, especially with the strike starting today.

It also isn't good for a child to have you so worried from a couple of big standard bruises. Taking photos etc will worry her. She will learn from you. Like it seems half a dozen posters on this thread got their health anxieties from somewhere, probably parents.

Dguu6u · 11/04/2023 08:39

Kids always have bruises on their legs. Unless they keep coming back, or appear in other places, or other symptoms appear I wouldn't waste the GP's time.

booboo24 · 11/04/2023 08:42

When both of mine were young their legs, from the knees down, were absolutely plastered in bruises, my eldest's dance teacher even asked her what on earth she'd been up to! She just shrugged, she never knew what she'd done. I knew they were just generally from running round whilst playing or at school or home catching them on things. I did used to laugh though as they would occasionally clear up and I'd think great at last, then come spring, more outside play, bikes etc and their legs would be covered again. There was a noticeable line though, with barely any above the knee!

TheyWentToSeaInASieve · 11/04/2023 08:46

I'd say she tripped up on some stairs.

Tessabelle74 · 11/04/2023 08:48

Omg, if I rang the doctor every time my 6 year old had bruises I'd have to just move to the surgery. She's bumped herself, it happens and she doesn't remember because it wasn't hard enough to really hurt at the time. Just relax , she's fine

MaryShelley1818 · 11/04/2023 08:49

My 5yr olds legs are covered in bruises, none of which hurt, and none of which he could tell you how he'd done it. Children play, ride bikes, mess around, it's completely normal. The bruises you have posted are not Leukemia bruising.

Please please don't deprive someone of what could be a needed GP appointment just to make yourself feel better about your healthy child. I would expect them to seriously speak to you about time wasting to take a child to the doctor about a bruise. No wonder NHS is on its knees.

ShowUs · 11/04/2023 08:55

It doesn’t look like anything to worry about kids will often have random bruises.

I get massive random bruises and it used to be quite frightening but I’ve had them coming up since I was young and they’ve never caused me a problem.

My DD did have bruising and I took her to the GP who sent us to hospital.
I was then referred to SS and questioned on how she may have got them.

I remember being scared, angry, worried etc that SS were involved and I knew I or anyone hadn’t hurt her so I was frustrated that she could have an illness that they weren’t taking seriously.

Everything was fine in the end and SS said they had no concerns or anything and the bruises went away and she’s been fine ever since.

But just a heads up if you do take her to the GP.

Member869894 · 11/04/2023 08:58

I'd be more concerned about your anxiety over some shin bruises . Is everything OK Op?

liveforsummer · 11/04/2023 09:02

DC's shins tend to be covered in bruised once they lost their toddler padding. Generally from knocking in to things when busy so gies unnoticed. I'd look for more unusual bruising than just shins before worrying or contacting a gp

liveforsummer · 11/04/2023 09:04

There’s no table here at the moment. No coffee or dining table as we’ve just moved in. Only bed in her room, sofa in lounge.

Surely she's been out the house though?

Verbena17 · 11/04/2023 09:06

DD (21) bruises very easily - massive bruises that don’t hurt very similar looking to your pictures.
DD has Selective IgA Deficiency- I’ve looked to see if it’s connected but other than a type of a bruise/rash on legs and buttocks, I can’t find with a quick skim anything that says about bruising.

Might be worth asking for a blood test for her though and ask about immunodeficiency issues.
However, where the bruises are equally on both legs, I wonder if she’s bashed them against her bed.

MumtoDSandDD · 11/04/2023 09:06

My DD often seems to have bruises on her shins, it’s coincided with her using the trampoline more, as she runs around it too. It doesn’t look concerning.

Maple2023 · 10/04/2023 23:43

I bruise easily, always have
Went for a smear test and the nurse was convinced I was being abused because my legs were so bad Blush
Currently got about 3 on my legs, none are sore and I've no idea how I did them

This happens to me too 😩

I can get bruised from just leaning on things, I bruise v easily. I’m vegan and I have read it’s common for veggies and vegans to bruise more easily as we have less b12.

TheGuv1982 · 11/04/2023 09:08

My boy always has unexplained bruises, never knows how he got them and they always look awful.

Noticed that now his sister has moved into the “too cool to play” she, she doesn’t, although given that 99% of her time out of school seems to be in her room…I wouldn’t see them anyway

Ariela · 11/04/2023 09:08

Measure the approx height of the bruise above floor level. Check other members of the family's legs at that height. Also be aware as you move around the house what is also at that height. Chances are its a bed leg or stool or something, and it may well be you're ALL bruised at that height..
