Bruising on child legs with no explanation

I’m really worried about my daughters legs they have bruising on them. I am of course going to call my GP in the morning but right now I’m going crazy googling and finding all sorts of diseases it could be a sign of. Please tell me if you’ve experienced similar with your kids please. She has been with me all week so no chance of anyone doing this to her. She’s doesn’t remember how it happened and it doesn’t hurt when I touch it. What could be the cause?

I think leukaemia is a bit of a jump.

I'm not meaning this to sound rude but are you normally health anxious or is there something else making you suspect something other than what is most likely (that she has given them a knock off something)?

Careerdilemma · 10/04/2023 23:25

My bruises are rarely sore so I don't think that is a worry in itself. Chat to the GP, but it's very likely to be nothing to worry about.

HaggisFace · 10/04/2023 23:25

I currently have a huge bruise that does not hurt when touched. It's black so a bad one but not painful

worriedMum1123 · 10/04/2023 23:23

Thank you everyone! Yes I’m sure it’s nothing but the fact that it doesn’t hurt when I touch it is that to be worried about? Surely a bruise would be sore?

You are completely over thinking it. She is a child. They get bruises. You will be wasting the GP time if you take her in for this. Not only that but you are going to make her as anxious as you are.

Gingergirl70 · 10/04/2023 23:26

Is the bruising something that had been happening a lot or are these the first time you've noticed it?
Personally, I think to have bruising in exact same place on both legs indicates they've hit their legs on something. It would be highly unusual for a disease to make identical bruises appear in exact same places on both legs at exactly same time.
If you are truly worried (which you obviously are), I'd maybe phone 111 before bothering GP

Itsonlyagame · 10/04/2023 23:28

Do you have a dishwasher? Walking into the dishwasher door when it's down might be the cause. I do this about three times a day and have near constant shin bruises from it.

Amybelle88 · 10/04/2023 23:28

Those bruises are yellowing which usually means they are older - probably done the week before last and probably not in the week you've been with her.

Try not to worry - if she's otherwise healthy she's ok - just a normal child. My two always have them - we call them summer legs 😂

MeinKraft · 10/04/2023 23:28

Both my kids have had constantly bruised shins and knees since they could walk, i take it this isn't usual for your DD though?

JanglyBeads · 10/04/2023 23:30

I'd say not to worry, although they are a bit of an odd shape and the fact that the same crescent shape is on both shins seems a little odd.

Is her dad around?

SofiaAmes · 10/04/2023 23:31

My dd had unexplained bruises like that through her entire childhood. The doctor fobbed me off with telling me that they were normal. She had other symptoms as well as she got older. She was just diagnosed with mild hemophilia A last year at age 19 which explained everything.

However, having said that, the bruising wasn't serious enough to have warranted further exploration or the testing that she eventually had to diagnose the hemophilia. It was only the later symptoms that were more serious that ended up with the testing being done and even that took 6 years and a dozen doctors before they tested her properly.

StillMedusa · 10/04/2023 23:32

Some kids bruise more than others. I really really wouldn't be worried about those at all.. they look like she's walked into something. I'm sporting identical ones on myself and honestly can't remember banging my legs on anything!

When my DS1 was younger one of his teachers actually pulled him aside to ask how he got so many bruises (good safeguarding!) DS1 could list the ones he got from his bike and from skating but not all... luckily the teacher knew what an active kid he was and believed him. He was always sporting a few bruises growing up!

If she started bruising all over in places that you don't bump, then I'd want a check up, but two bruises on legs..no.

CoffeeNeeded2019 · 10/04/2023 23:32

Op could it be something simple like the bed frame of her bed perhaps?

LateOnTheBandwagon · 10/04/2023 23:34

I get (non painful) bruising very similar to this is I use a stepladder e.g. when I am painting. Maybe something similar if she has been reaching across something hard when packing up? Hopefully will turn out to be something with a simple explanation.

worriedMum1123 · 10/04/2023 23:34

Thank you everyone. The glass test - isn’t that just for a rash and not for bruises? I’ve just rolled a glass on the side as shown on NHS site and it doesn’t fade.

Any other symptoms, nose bleeds for instance?

cornflakegeneration · 10/04/2023 23:36

These look like totally normal "fell over in the playground" bruises to me. My sons legs looked like this permanently from age 4 - 8.

worriedMum1123 · 10/04/2023 23:37

she has no other signs listed on NHS. She’s gone to bed now. We had a busy day unpacking so don’t want to keep waking her with the glass test and just let her sleep.

@worriedMum1123 if someone has now (unnecessarily) panicked you into thinking DC may have meningitis, you really are best ringing 111 or heading to a&e. Nothing anyone says on here is going to convince you it's not something life threatening and as meningitis is extremely life threatening, sitting here posting on MN is not really going to help, is it?

Greenfree · 10/04/2023 23:38

My DD use to get random bruises on her legs, I realised most of them from the ladder to get up the slide. She wouldn't proper bang herself on them but I noticed that part of her leg always caught one of the stores as she was climbing it, she couldn't feel it but it left a bruise

worriedMum1123 · 10/04/2023 23:40

Thank you everyone and I’m sure I’m overreacting. Yea no other symptoms. No to nose bleeds she’s never had one. I’m so sorry for PP about your daughter being diagnosed with mild hemophilia, I hope she is okay.

yes I can imagine school picking it up as safeguarding as another PP said! She’s been with me all week so I know it’s not done on purpose.

I bruise easily, always have
Went for a smear test and the nurse was convinced I was being abused because my legs were so bad Blush
Currently got about 3 on my legs, none are sore and I've no idea how I did them

PollyPut · 10/04/2023 23:44

do the glass test now, I'm sure you can do it whilst she is asleep without waking her

i'd definitely keep an eye on it - most bruising is just because of bumping but not all.

PizzaGirls · 10/04/2023 23:47

Oh
I had some bruises like this for ages, came out of nowhere and red.. thought I might be dying - worked out… it was from the pedals on my bike 🤦🏻‍♀️

has your DD been riding a bike? Or similar?
