PIL are staying for the week and something is up with MIL stomach because of the medication she takes. And we are not being spared the details. She's off to the toilet every five minutes and we're being given a running commentary -

"Oooh, I'll have to go up to the toilet again, things are happening."

"I must say, my bowels are rather loose."

At the dinner table -

"I'll have to leave this meal, I need another trip to the bathroom. My stomach isn't behaving. I'll get there, won't be forever, not much left in me now."

As we're trying to eat FGS!

DP is ignoring it but I genuinely feel like I need to be in another room from her all the time. AIBU??

What medication is it? If it’s metformin that’s evil to the bowels- trust me!

KimberleyClark · 10/04/2023 23:04

My late MIL would say “ I must go and see Mrs Murphy”.

RedSmartie · 10/04/2023 23:07

It's shit of her.

Ah, my coat, thank you.

Ishacoco · 10/04/2023 23:19

She's gone to bed now, thankfully. Hopefully her bowels will settle down overnight. They're here for another 4 days.....

Absolutely minging and such awful manners as you are eating!
Get your DH to have a word

Oakyloaky · 10/04/2023 23:23

Better not to comment. She is obviously embarrassed .

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 10/04/2023 23:24

Reading your thread title, I was thinking that someone saying "excuse me, must pop to the loo" wasn't a bad thing and you might be erring on precious.

However reading on to your OP and her extended comments, it's not pleasant. I agree you need to get DH to "have a word" - you don't need all the details! Her apologising is fine but no one really needs to know how much shit is in/out.

And I really have the least squeamish stomach ever but wouldn't enjoy hearing those details from my MIL!

JMSA · 10/04/2023 23:24

Wouldn't bother me.

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 10/04/2023 23:25

@ReadersD1gest have you seen the MN CF edition thread and how many people say "quoting the OP post" Grin

Invite her round, then, and give op a break.

Sorry, what?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 10/04/2023 23:29

Poor lady sounds horribly embarrassed and trying to make light of the situation. It seems you think she lacks class or manners but so do you!
Someone possessed of real class and good manners would quietly overlook her embarrassed mutterings and when she returned to the table gently reintroduce her to the conversation.

CC4712 · 10/04/2023 23:36

Can you speak to her in private and tell her that there is really no need to announce to everyone the details of her bowels???

LittleRedRoses · 10/04/2023 23:37

I’d have said something, I couldn’t put up with that level of rudeness and that’s not embarrassment. People quietly leave the table and excuse themselves without the running commentary for goodness sake. No-one needs a commentary or is interested in someone else needing to use the loo!

JudgeRudy · 10/04/2023 23:42

I think the first time is OK to say you have a dodgy stomach but that's enough. Next time she says something say Its not an airport. You dont need to announce every departurr.Just go.
Ensure there's plenty of loo roll! BTW...is it Metformin?

Maple2023 · 10/04/2023 23:45

My dad keeps going on about being constipated
He's not, he just isn't going as often and won't have it that you don't need to go every day men and their toilet habits
I did point out that maybe drinking some water and eating some actual vegetables might help Hmm

All I hear is "I'm struggling to go, there's nothing there"
Then... don't go?!

You’d hate my MIL, she often says before dinner “Off to the loo, got to make room for dinner” 🤮

Blimey, does she eat dinner with her anus?

InSpainTheRain · 10/04/2023 23:50

Grim. I would hate that and definitely be off my food. Not sure what you can do though.

Blimey, do you know how the digestive system works? 😂

Peachy2005 · 11/04/2023 00:02

Get your DH to say “ Mum we don’t need the details thanks, TMI” or similar. He could alternatively mention to his Dad that nobody wants to hear the details, if he can’t say it to her directly.

ComputerWifeKaren · 11/04/2023 00:32

"Off you pop love, you know where the air freshener is. We don't need updates"

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/04/2023 02:25

I find it absolutely baffling that people are so precious they would find this gross. I must be totally without class.

I do indeed! Emptying the rectum doesn't make room in the stomach, it makes room in the rectum!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 11/04/2023 03:59

While it certainly isn't very polite, I would find it more odd / bizarre than gross; however, you could approach her about it privately and tell her that you're trying to reinforce table manners and appropriate mealtime topics of conversation with your child(ren) and it would be helpful if she could refrain from speaking about using the toilet during meals.

That's true but everyone knows the difference between feeling bloated before a poo and all light and empty after one!!
Who wants to eat more when your tummy feels full and you need a poo??
