Dogs in shops

I have been to an out of town designer outlet place today where it would appear they are dog friendly and dogs are allowed in the clothes and shoe shops. Surely a trip to the shops is not a place to take your dog? We were in a small clothes shop which is already a bit on the tight side, the three dogs in there did not make it any easier to get around. AIBU to think clothes shops should be dog free zones?

Agree 100% clothes shops are not place for dogs

Toooldtoworry · 10/04/2023 14:26

I own 3 dogs. I've lived in Germany where they're welcome in clothes shops and I still agree dogs shouldn't be in there.

PuffinsRocks · 10/04/2023 14:27

YANBU I saw someone with a dog in their Morrisson's trolley yesterday. Imagine that bum that's pooed sitting where someone will put their food shopping. Horrendous.

samestyle · 10/04/2023 14:28

Yes it should be dog free, it's not hygienic and I want to shop in peace without dogs around my legs. I witnessed one dog pooing in the middle of shopping centre last week 🤮

Ossoduro2 · 10/04/2023 14:29

There are so many places that should be dog free but have become ‘dog friendly’. It drives me mad. Guide dogs are fine, obviously, but any other dog should be treated as an animal not a human.

modgepodge · 10/04/2023 14:29

I noticed a dog in TK maxx this weekend and it struck me as odd. My daughter is terrified, it’s bad enough having to manage her in parks and places where I legitimately expect to see dogs, having to do this in the shops too is a pain and entirely unnecessary.

Legoandloldolls · 10/04/2023 14:30

YANBU I saw a dog cock it's leg and piss in a shop and the owner didn't even notice. I'm sure it's cute and part of the family, but if my child did this it would be pitchforks at dawn. Its more acceptable to have a badly behaved dog than a child. Another dog years ago did a massive shit in the post office. It seems the vast majority of people are fine this though. I think it's rank personally

Groutyonehereagain · 10/04/2023 14:30

Goody another dog thread. 🙄

Kamisaka · 10/04/2023 14:31

Its pretty unnecessary IMO. If MILs dog so much as brushes past me I'm left with a load of dog hair on my clothes.

CeriB82 · 10/04/2023 14:34

I hate dogs in shops and cafes. Unless a guide dog, they should be at home or outside. They are annoying

Heyha · 10/04/2023 14:35

As a dog owner I agree completely that they shouldn't be in shops. In the 10 years we've had our dog I think the only times he's been in any sort of shop were a couple of times in 'outdoors' shops when we were camping and needing something urgently, and my agri feed merchant which has their own dogs, cats, and the occasional chicken hanging about anyway.

Is this a banned subject on MN? Do you get upset when the BBC reports on dog attacks too?

Lockheart · 10/04/2023 14:38

If the shop allows pet dogs then they allow pet dogs. If you have an issue with it take it up with the management.

JavaQ · 10/04/2023 14:40

If I can’t take my emotional support mini goat into shops, then dogs should be banned too!

ginforall · 10/04/2023 14:40

It made me wonder why shops allow it, I was curious if it was just me that found it odd, but apparently not.

Some places are more dog friendly than wheelchair friendly too.

pepperquorn · 10/04/2023 14:41

Went into a cafe which is very much on the small side.
It has a few chairs and a couple of smallish sofas which often get shared by customers due to the small size of the cafe.
I sat on one end of the sofa enjoying my coffee and guy comes in with a dog and he lets the dog sit on the sofa in between us.
I promptly left as I can have a minor reactions to dog hair.

Because it's good for business. They wouldn't allow them otherwise.

Vote with your feet and purse if you disagree with the policy.

KnittingNeedles · 10/04/2023 14:42

Of course a clothes shop isn't a place for dogs.

But be prepared for the dog-obsessed to try to justify this because they can't leave their "furbabies" for 5 minutes, if the shop is happy to let the dogs in that means that it's a free for all, and then make ridiculous comparisons between dogs and children.

ddd20102010 · 10/04/2023 14:42

It is very common in Europe especially Spain to see dogs welcome signs in many shops eg supermarkets. Not sure I agree about a small clothes shop though. To a lot of people dogs are their children.

Our local pub had a lamb in it yesterday. 😊

Does that not tell you something?

GreenWheat · 10/04/2023 14:43

Lockdown has spawned a new type of inappropriate and entitled dog owner, who treat them like children and think everyone else should too, or just have no concept of where it's appropriate to bring dogs. It was never like this pre-pandemic.

SmileyHappyDoggos · 10/04/2023 14:44

kitsuneghost · 10/04/2023 14:43

Yes. It tells me the crazy dog haters assemble on mumsnet.

LolaSmiles · 10/04/2023 14:44

I dislike dogs in shops most of the time. My dogs don't come to the shops with me and when I am shopping I don't want other people's dogs in the way.

What annoys me is how often shops are apparently dog friendly, but aren't accessible for people with disabilities or for those with young children.
