Socialist vs Capitalist Easter Egg Hunts

Confrontayshunme · 09/04/2023 20:01

Growing up, my experience was a free-for-all where you got however many eggs you could find before they were all in baskets and gone. Tiny children got a few and older kids got more generally.

My DH's family hide all the eggs then have an elaborate system of division where everyone gets the same- from 2 year olds to teenagers.

Decide the debate once and for all: Which one is best?

YABU - Socialist "No, you already have a Malteaser Bunny so Give Your Brother That One" Egg Hunts

YANBU - Capitalist "You Get What You Get And Maybe Next Year You Will Be Better at Finding Them" Egg Hunts

An effective capitalist would work with the other most effective people to get the most, then share charitably with the others.

Inthesamesinkingboat · 09/04/2023 20:04

My family are going to think I’ve posted this because I’ve had the same bloody rant so many times. Socialism should keep its nose out of the serious business of Easter egg hunts.

StillTryingtoBuy · 09/04/2023 20:05

I think there’s another way - a trail / challenge and when you complete it you get your prize, prize can be age appropriate. If you’re better at it you’ll finish quicker and get to relax and enjoy your prize…clues / challenge could also be age appropriate. I don’t think a free for all with 2/3 year olds competing with 9/10 year olds works well for either age.

Another option - no hiding / hunting, just give them their eggs?!

IhearyouClemFandango · 09/04/2023 20:05

Everyone gathers the eggs (if more than one in a hiding spot just take one and leave the rest of others to enjoy finding) and then they get shared out equally after.

Otherwise my 5 year old would be severely disadvantaged by my 13 year old who would pass out in a cocoa coma

Socialist egg hunters here, my older kids help the you get ones. It's more fun and lasts longer. Plus no arguments. Win win.

OneCup · 09/04/2023 20:07

Socialist egg hunting for us.

That sounds much better. Older kids were sharing with littler ones at ours today and trading after which they all enjoyed…the littles kids were happy enough with whatever they got but the 5 and 6 year olds couldn’t be fobbed off and found it all a bit frustrating.

Mylobsterteapot · 09/04/2023 20:08

I hide different colour resuable plastic eggs filled with sweets/chocolate. Then each child looks for alloacted colours.

Starlightstarbright1 · 09/04/2023 20:08

I never ever had an egg hunt at Easter . How does that figure in your scheme?

goodkidsmaadhouse · 09/04/2023 20:11

Capitalist here but nobody feels hard done by. My older two always choose to give some of their bounty to the youngest anyway but I don't really want him to have as much as them (and the parents always end up taking a tax from everybody over the ensuing days...)

bitcharming · 09/04/2023 20:13

Colour coordinated eggs is the way to go, maybe some house point dot stickers for each child?
The best Easter we ever had was when dh did an elaborate egg treasure hunt but it takes so long to set up, I didn't bother this year (and he's working so couldn't stay up all night) so I just sat back while the kids ransacked the house looking for eggs.
Next year I'll be writing down a lost of what to look for so we know when we are done.

GU24Mum · 09/04/2023 20:14

We're definitely on the socialist side with the egg hunt. When there are quite a few eggs, each person can only pick up one at a time then bring it back to a central location. Much easier to hide them as you can put more than one in each location and have smaller ones trailing the older ones.

This year the shops ran out a bit earlier so it was a case of "you can collect 1x large egg, 1x chocolate shape and 5 small ones.

Works for us. We operate a variation on a theme at Christmas as the presents for the children aren't named but are numbered. I have the master list so there is less of the "is my pile bigger than yours" going on.

littlegreydevil · 09/04/2023 20:14

Socialist here. All the eggs collected end up in a big basket and then get divided equally. In the past, I used to lay the eggs two by two (for my two kids) and told them it was team work or nothing. So they had to work out the clues together and collect an egg each, each time.

Oysterbabe · 09/04/2023 20:16

My gentle DS would end up with nothing with DD and the rabble of cousins bulldozing through. We hunt then share.

Zola1 · 09/04/2023 20:17

Kids solve the clues together, there's one for each of them in each hiding place

BooksAndHooks · 09/04/2023 20:19

We have their big eggs etc for the egg hunt, each person has a different coloured post it for theirs. Never would I let one grab it all and leave the others out.

MrsToothyBitch · 09/04/2023 20:20

My cousins have a capitalist free for all on the small treats and a communist system on the big ones- all "main" eggs are named and everybody gets 2 items max.

ApolloandDaphne · 09/04/2023 20:20

Always capitalist. As the dictator I would even things out by taking from the child with the most. It has proved to be good learning!

3WildOnes · 09/04/2023 20:22

Socialist. Everyone puts what they have found in a basket and then I divide it up.

Whilst keeping most for themselves and insisting on gratitude for the charity.

livingthegoodlife · 09/04/2023 20:25

Mission to collect 20 eggs each, then come and collect a bigger prize. I guess socialist because they get an equal amount? But winner gets prize first...

Fizbosshoes · 09/04/2023 20:26

Since my kids have been maybe 8 or 9 I've done a hunt with clues that they have to work together to solve. The last clue leads them to their eggs/treats. They don't get the same because one doesn't really like chocolate!

Lol.

NalafromtheLionKing · 09/04/2023 20:29

Capitalist in life but not when it comes to DCs sharing. Equality all the way there (or fairness where there can’t be equality).

YellowGreenBlue · 09/04/2023 20:29

Here it's unrelated to age - DD (middle child) beats her two brothers by miles every year. She must be better at spotting shiny objects! We use the socialist approach to even things up.
