my dc are away with their dad this weekend and I’m attempting to gut my house! I have one precious audible token to use and I need recommendations for a nice long and gripping audiobook to keep me company. Not too fussy about genre as long as it’s not romance. What are the best audiobooks you’ve listened to?

Michelle Obama's autobiography "Becoming" is superb. I'm currently listening to her latest book whilst gardening.

Mudlarking by Laura Malkiem, Ramble Book by Adam Buxton, Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, Mr Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab, And Away by Bob Mortimer, Songbook by Dave Grohl, Windswept and Interesting by Billy Connolly, My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh and Fire Rush by Jacqueline Crooks are the best audio books I have listened to that have kept my attention and haven't required a rewind as my mind's wandered off.

Labyrinth by Kate Mosse is a great favourite of mine and it's beautifully narrated.

Thanks so much, I will now spend the next hour procrastinating by investigating all these suggestions!

Stephen Fry reading Sherlock Holmes - if that kind of genre works for you, it was about 70 hours for one credit! I loved it, and it got me through a lot of marathon training (I listen to books when I run).

The Handmaids Tale is excellent.

He's excellent and the Sherlock Holmes books are just so clever. Agatha Christie also worked well for me when doing housework.

One of the best audio books I listened to was "the passengers" by John Marrs. It's set in the near future and is about self-driving cars being hacked and sent on a collision course. The audio book is also narrated by 6 different people. It's a bit like listening to a play rather than a book.

This is a great thread for quick reference

Slightly left field, but my library does something called BORROWBOX, which is an app for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks, for free. See if yours does. Also BBC SOUNDS is fabulous for downloading plays, serialised books etc. My favourite BBC Sounds serial is G F Newman's The Corrupted, a six series crime thriller.

I second Borrowbox, it is easy to set up once you have a library account and there is a good selection of audiobooks. You could use it alongside audible and everything is free. Once you have a library account you can also get access to Pressreader which is the app for free digital newspapers.
