Is office work bitchy ?

I have a friend who had worked in a residential home for adults with learning disabilities since leaving school, ( approx. 8 years).
Whilst at school/ college she worked weekends in a local shop.

She's now recently started an admin job in a local office. She's told me she cannot believe how bitchy the office is, and my partner, ( who works on the railways,) laughed and essentially said , "everyone knows office work is bitchy, they don't have real work to do so bitch about each other all day."

It got me thinking, I have worked in some pretty bitchy offices.

Is office work bitchier than other sectors ?

Examples of bitchniness in friends office;

,- laughing at overweight colleagues eating large lunches,

  • laughing at new girl for wearing unflattering clothes/ having spots,
  • Creating work office WhatsApp group chat with everyone but one member etc

Currently work in an office of about 70 people. As I'd expect there are a few people who don't always behave in a way I'd like to behave but on the whole the people are great and supportive. I have made a lovely group of friends there and we socialise a lot together. My previous job was a very small office of 10 and there was no bitching going on there. I imagine that there are some industries where bitching could be a big thing but on the whole most people are nice so I imagine most offices are nice environments.

most people are fine but there's always one. where i am now, there is a woman who is super religious, gave up stuff for lent, talked about the vigil mass on good friday..... when she and two other women go for coffee without me, she will say ''can I bring you back anything?'' and it makes me despair. It's like her way of doing a shit thing but then squaring it in her head that she's still a good person!

It's not my first rodeo with office bitches but I'm leaving this job as soon as I can so this time round it's not hurting me, i'm just observing it. It actually amuses me a little that they think including me would ruin their thursday coffee. I've worked there a year, maybe I need to be there five years before I'm included!

In my last job, I ended up being there a long time, and i contributed to the ethos of inclusion. If we went for lunch or for drinks after work, EVERYbody was asked. There was none of this gatekeeping to keep new people out, or whatever it is that's going on where I work now. I will be tougher when I go to the next place. I'll go in with no expectations at all. I think that everybody was so lovely where I worked before I thought ''people are generally lovely'' but where I am now, it's just like the bad apples run the show. Hard to explain. Or worse, women who are a bit bitchy but whose view of themself is that they're a great christian. omg. beam me up.

I'm surprised as someone who works in a residential home that she finds office work bitchy. Carers/ support workers are usually the worse 😂

Tbh I find the insinuation that ...
"everyone knows office work is bitchy, they don't have real work to do so bitch about each other all day"...
is quite bitchy in itself.
