England is so expensive.

I just flew over from Ireland to England for a couple of days.

Jesus everything is so expensive in England! I felt like I burned through money.

I thought Ireland was pricy enough, but England is way more expensive.

I've come home, looked at my bank account and cried a little haha.

For example I got a train in Ireland before I left. It was 14 euro.

I got a train for the same distance in England. It was 40 pounds. It didn't even travel that far. And the guy in the train station told me that this was the best deal ticket "it was off peak"

Everything in the UK supermarket was so pricy.

I was just a little shocked. How are you all coping with it

Which places are you actually comparing? Train travel is only one thing. Plus Ireland is very poorly connected by rail.
I think Dublin is significantly more expensive than even London.

MYSTERIOUSGIRLONLINE · 06/04/2023 20:52

England is very expensive compared to Ireland as I live in Ireland myself and I'd went over to England a couple of weeks ago to spend time with my brother and his wife. It cost an absolute bomb whatever I was buying! Thankfully they are coming to Ireland next time. Beautiful place they live but they do both work in a high paid job so it doesn't phase them the cost of living and looking to buy rather than rent as they are at present.

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/04/2023 20:53

I find it the other way around when I visit Ireland, and I live in London. Bought a round of four drinks in an average pub in Malahide the other week: €48!

Rightsaidmargot · 06/04/2023 20:54

Food is really cheap in UK compared to most countries.

PriamFarrl · 06/04/2023 20:54

Trains are ridiculously expensive. No one can afford trains.

Oh yeah Ireland is definitely pricy for sure.

But I honestly got a shock when I went to England. I feel like it is way pricier than I remember it being. Last time I was in England was a year ago.

Em let me compare one thing.

The local restaurant near me in Ireland charges 11 euro for a burger and chips. Sitting down in the restaurant.

I popped into a restaurant in the UK, and they were charging 15.99 pounds for a burger and chips.

I’ve just moved here from Australia and I’m also constantly amazed at how expensive everything is. My last electricity bill was equivalent of £120 for three summer months of air con. I now pay around £250 a month. Train fares - Jesus! £36 from Guildford to London, half an hour! I used to pay a couple of dollars for a train ride in Sydney.
Council tax is over double what we paid, food is not quite as expensive but it’s similar.

Reluctantadult · 06/04/2023 20:56

My dad's over here from New Zealand. I think overall its cheaper here. He's commented the super market shop was cheap. A meal out was expensive. The beer is the same. House prices are actually surprisingly comparable. And so many comments on the traffic and state of the roads!

Hankunamatata · 06/04/2023 20:56

Surely it's relative to where u live kn Ireland and where you visited in England. London and South England will be more expsive than parts of Ireland but probably comparable with Dublin.

Well yeah. Everywhere is. I am going to visit my native country in eu next month and frankly i am prepping myself for shocks. Mainly because i still have 2010 prices in my head😂 but also because prices everywhere have risen.

Hbh17 · 06/04/2023 20:57

You've obviously never visited Switzerland then 😂

Reluctantadult · 06/04/2023 20:58

Oh energy here really expensive. So actually in conclusion UK vs NZ from my dad's perspective, no clear cheapest.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/04/2023 20:58

Advance tickets make train travel cheaper. As do railcards.

Food prices for eating out can be quite regional. As can stuff like fuel... my brother is paying 8p more per litre in London as I do in Yorkshire for example.

But just because one particular restaurant is more expensive isn’t really a good comparison.
If you’re comparing your local vs a city centre restaurant then obviously it’s apples and oranges.

On the whole Ireland is significantly more expensive than the UK.

England is so expensive.
ClassicLib · 06/04/2023 20:58

I definitely find it to be the opposite way round. I can’t comment on train fares, but eating out, drinks in the pub & food at supermarkets are all much more expensive in Ireland than in the U.K.

The burger and chips comparison only works if - for example- you're comparing McDonald's in Ireland with one in England. You can pay a lot less than that in some restaurants and a lot more on others.

Sockloon · 06/04/2023 21:00

15.99 burger and chips love to know where your going, I've never paid that in England.

The mind boggles.

Ozgirl75 · 06/04/2023 21:04

@Hbh17 we went to Switzerland a few years ago and every time we ate anything or spent any money we were horrified, but it was so beautiful that it was worth it.
My son turned 5 when we were there and it was the first time I’ve ever done the “you’re 4 if anyone asks” as the train fare up the mountain was nearly double if we paid for his actual age! He was such a rubbish actor though and was going “YES MUMMY, I’m 4 aren’t I, wink wink winkety wink”

FoodieToo · 06/04/2023 21:06

I live in Dublin but visit London and the UK a lot . I think Dublin is dearer than London . Dublin has gotten so ridiculously expensive for everything .
I definitely find London cheaper for eating out/ glass of wine etc .

BMW6 · 06/04/2023 21:06

Trains are crazy expensive here. DH had to go to Birmingham from Southampton a month ago, train fare £100 and it was a replacement coach service as track repairs, National Express coach £12 there and £15 back!

RosesInWater · 06/04/2023 21:09

Why are trains so expensive in UK? I don't use them so I haven't a clue.

Eann · 06/04/2023 21:14

Yeah it’s insane, particularly peak time travel which is basically yet another form of tax on working people.

I got a full day underground travelcard in Hong Kong a few years ago. Cost me £0.40!

I don't think this is true - on comparison data London comes out more expensive to live in by 10% over Dublin
