AIBU not to take the work now?

I took a week off work as annual leave to help at a university overseeing some exams..they confirmed that they only wanted me to do 2 days not 5, so I kind of made plans for 3 days that I now have spare. So tonight at 5:30, I get an email reminding me I have 4 days work not 2. What should I do? The money is OK but I am not that desperate for it. Ergh, what to do??

Did they confirm the 2 days in an email? It would be handy if it was in writing as I'd just email them reminding what they already confirmed and unfortunately, you are no longer available for extra days.

It's up to you if you take on the extra days but I'd be tempted not to bother if you don't need the money

TottyKnickers · 06/04/2023 20:18

@Bivarb yes they confirmed the 2 days in an email last month.

Are you sure it isn’t just an error?

Id just do whatever you want. Do you want 2 days or 4.

BluetheBear · 06/04/2023 20:21

I think if they said 2 and now they're saying 4 then the ball if in your court.

TottyKnickers · 06/04/2023 20:22

I'm such a people pleaser, but I would rather do the 2 now not 4 but don't want to let them down

“Thanks for your email stating this is 4 days.

I am attaching our previous correspondence confirming just the two days [dates]. Further to this, I have made arrangements with family and friends.

This email is to confirm I will be working [dates] only.

Best wishes”

JudgeRudy · 06/04/2023 20:31

So you have agreed 2 days and have correspondence to prove this? I'm assuming if you've made plans, you have been allocated specific days.
l wouldnt be up for extra days if you've made plans. Just respond saying they’ve made a mistake and confirm the dates youre working. If you feel you could help them out by working an additional day offer, making it clear this is to be confirmed.

What I would ensure is that just because this is (presumably) a zero hours contract that you are not going to be at their beck and call and grateful for any crumbs that come your way. I've done some casual work before and get asked my availability in January for April. I'm allocated shifts (which I honour) but they have a habit of just 'informing' me I'm 'booked in' for an extra shift. Er no, I'm not, you haven't even asked me. Then they produce an email from January that says I can work certain days in April...er yes, I COULD then, but you didn't confirm any dates so I've made other plans!

in that case Just email and tell them that they’d confirmed only 2 days work and so you’ve made plans for the other days of the week and so are not available anymore.

Just send the email suggested by @blondieminx . Nothing to worry about.

TottyKnickers · 06/04/2023 20:36

I did email to say I was under the impression I only had 2 days, but it's Easter and I haven't heard anything back yet

Well that wasn't a very conclusive email OP. You should have just said you can't do it, if that's your intention. People might still check emails over Easter. You might think you're a people pleaser but you're not really helping by sitting on the fence about it.

TottyKnickers · 08/04/2023 17:44

@BluetheBear it's the Easter holidays. I doubt if the office staff are checking emails!
Once they get back to me I will tell them I don't wish to do it. Is that ok with you?

What's up with you @TottyKnickers Why did you start a thread if you were going to get agitated with the replies? I know people who check their emails on weekends. I'm not saying everyone does.

@BluetheBear You are very invested aren't you? Do you work in Scottish University admin? Is it your mistake and you are going to get in trouble for it?
