You post something on Mumsnet - fair enough it is going to cause a debate but people take your view completely the wrong way?

I've changed my username but I had a thread going that is just finishing now thank god. My post was about a particular subject and one poster took one sentence completely the wrong way. The way she read it was not how I meant it and i thought that was pretty obvious considering everything else I wrote. But she just focused on this one particular sentence and twisted my words entirely. Then others began to agree with her. We much as I tried to defend myself it was no good - I was this person that had a negative view on a particularly sensitive subject.

However I am not that person. I didn't mean to offend anyone and I certainly did not have the view that was thrown upon me.

It just took one person and she thoroughly enjoyed watching my thread get torn to pieces. The odd person stood up for me and could see it for the way it supposed to be.

Anyone else experienced this?

Fucking Cyclists by any chance?

Unfortunately, that's how Mumsnet is. Especially on AIBU. People will actively look for something to take the wrong way and rip you a new one.

Be comfortable in the knowledge that you aren't a bad person!

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 09:56

So all the posters that agreed with her interpretation of this “sentence” are all thick and can’t think for themselves?

Ha no but I can see how that thread could have gone if cyclists were involved!

The thread about DHs diary? If so, I knew what you meant!!!!

Excited101 · 04/04/2023 09:58

Oh this happens all the time on here. It’s grim, and nasty, and bullying.

perfectly demonstrated by Ursula up there ^^

@userfred Exhibit A 😂

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 09:59

Impossible to comment whether you have a point or not without seeing this “sentence”

put your money where your mouth is! 😂

Oh yeah! Same, knew exactly what the OP was talking about!

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 10:01

Shemovesshemoves21 · 04/04/2023 09:58

@userfred Exhibit A 😂

But that’s basically what the op is saying

one poster misinterprets her “sentence”

and along comes lots of posters agreeing with that interpretation

so even if the interpretation is wrong, then the way you wrote it must have been ambiguous you enough that multiple posters misinterpreted it

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 09:56

No, she wrote a humongous post stating her views based on one small sentence of my thread. This particular sentence was 3 words long where I was simply describing something.

She took this sentence completely the wrong way and took the thread in a whole different direction to where it was supposed to go.

Like I say, there were some who tried to keep the thread in line with my op but the majority read hers and it just went off on one. The thread ended up being about something completely different to what it was supposed too and my view on the subject was atrocious.

Why don’t you post the thread here?

Don't tempt me....was literally thinking the same but I got too scared to say it!

This happens to most of my threads! I think sometimes people just like a good argument and want to twist you all up and back you into a corner! Probably best to ignore these posters OP. I tend to fall into the trap of trying to correct them and reiterating my view and trying to explain they've misunderstood me, but it never ends well! People love to try and get you all twisted up in knots!

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 10:04

Ok, so it was a thread you started that you didn’t like the way it went

two a penny amongst OPs on mumsnet

Yeah... we all know what happens, though, don't we?

One person picks at something ridiculous to be inflammatory, and other like-minded prats jump on it, which snowballs into what the OP describes. A complete pile on for other people's amusement.

It's clear as day when it happens, and not uncommon, unfortunately.

IShouldGoToSleep · 04/04/2023 10:07

I think people are already trying to do it to you on this thread OP! My experience of AIBU is that the OP can never win! If you are going to post here, best to just treat it as an interesting experience with some useful advice in places, but don't take anything too personally! Enjoy what you see popping up, but don't take the bait and get into tangled arguments :)

Defence barristers and the cab rank process?

Literally realised that the moment @Ursualesther popped up 😂

I think I'm just too naive. I know not everyone has the same opinion but this particular topic was quite serious and I was made out not to care about a particular subject that I actually care so deeply about.

I think I'll just be a silent reader from now on 🍿😂

Ifallelsefailschocolate · 04/04/2023 10:26

It’s probably bitter & twisted men who don’t know what else to do other than get on Mumsnet for sport

SpinningFloppa · 04/04/2023 10:31

Not this exact thing but I posted on a thread that got deleted but it was about young girls being topless in public, the op also said she had no issues with young girls being naked in public, I commented saying I would never allow my child to be naked in public (or topless) and some poster
jumped on me and said “where the hell does it say naked?! What’s wrong with people ffs” it was literally in the op!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/04/2023 10:54

Sorry that happened to you OP, some people are just bored twats looking for diversion.

I find with threads if they get diverted early on, you will never ever get back on track and may as well throw yourself down a lift shaft for all the helpful advice you'll get after that, as the twats have taken the early signs that it's ok to pile on and give you a kicking.
