Weekly shop cost!

I know it’s nothing new. I see these threads every few weeks but yesterday I had a proper ‘what the hell?’ moment. I sat and worked out how much we spent in supermarkets last month. Honestly felt sick when I realised. I won’t start this telling you as want to see what others are spending before I own up to ours 🤦‍♀️(it’s bad)

So my questions.

1. how much are you spending per week/month in the supermarket?
2. Do you do ‘big weekly’ shops or multiple smaller shops?

To avoid a drip feed, two of our household have allergies and one has ASD. Two adults, two children both in nappies and a cat. clothes (rarely for us mostly for kids) and gifts/special occasion items included in supermarket shop. I used to do big weekly shops but now do multiple smaller. Definitely think that’s made it worse.

Weekly shop is between £50-65 depending on what household essentials have run out eg dishwasher tablets.

I often spend in the local Tesco in between, little bits here and there, things we could live without. Usually chocolate. Not sure how much that amounts to, maybe anywhere between £0-20.

1 adult, 1 child and one almost adult who doesn’t eat at home very often. Oh and a small dog.

£100 3 adults including wine, cleaning supplies etc. shop most days, eat out one main meal, take lunch to work

I spent £75 at Waitrose and it was two bags. DH asked where the rest was.

this week it was £135 at Morrisons and there was a lot in there.

DH is a financial controller for a supermarket group and he said that there were 2000 price increases in the past month and more to come so he works on this on a daily basis but seems to be clueless about our own shopping.

we used to spend £125 a week plus a takeaway.

now that really is hitting more towards £180 in total and things like steak, cans of coke and big Sunday roast meats are now a treat rather than routine.

it feels noticeable and a little painful. We both work full time and I said last night that we are back to the budget range where a few years ago we were throwing in organic and product ranges like Daylesford without thinking twice.

same income but a huge difference.

How do you spend £19 on deodorant??? It's lidl all around here, 79p

2018 I was spending £70-£80 at Aldi for a family of five. That was not a luxury shop but we had naice ham, didn't think too much about a few extras in the trolley. Now I'm lucky if it's £100 but more often it's around £120 and that's with cheaper meat, no luxuries. That's not including household items or alcohol. That's a separate budget. My actual 'allowance' for food is 500pcm but I'm running at a loss monthly. It not sustainable. Oh and I'm someone who meal plans to an inch of my life, cook from scratch and cooking fairly budget meals.

I budget £600 a month for everything - food, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc. I do a monthly trip to home bargains for household and toiletries, always end up with snacks in there too, budget £50. Have a month Amazon subscribe & save delivery for £50 of various bits (changes every month depending on what we need). That leaves us £500pm for food, which we definitely do spend. We’re a family of 5, 2ad and 3dc aged 9-15. It’s usually split into roughly £100pw on a big shop, £10 through the week on bits & bobs we top up and the rest on a takeaway/meal out once a month.

We don’t buy branded goods really, aside from Bear YoYo’s as they’re the only fruit my incredibly fussy daughter will eat. Everything else is store brand unless an offer makes a brand cheaper.

Sunday roast done right can save money, we often have pork shoulder and and a £10 joint makes 3 meals (the roast, a stirfry, and a hog roast style with sweet potato fries, mini ciabatta rolls, salads.) Plus perhaps a couple of days of sandwiches for dp, he usually gets leftovers for Monday from the roast too. I've also made pork fajitas from it, pork chilli etc, very versatile

But that's still £4.75 each. Which I wouldn't pay. I'd just get whatever one was on offer for a pound or two.

I know prices have gone up, but we're not at the stage where a deodorant has to cost nearly a fiver.

Which is still a ridiculous amount, even branded deodorant is £2/3, you could buy 4 cans of deodorant for under £10 in any supermarket

£19 means they cost £4.75 each, what deodorant costs that?

From looking at my loyalty apps, in March I spent just over £250 in Lidl and about another £200 in Tesco. That's for a family of 2 adults and 2 teens, including all toiletries and some 'extras' like gifts and cards, but no booze and very little meat. A couple of years ago I was probably spending about the same doing all my shopping in Sainsbury's so I've basically compensated for the price rises by changing where I shop rather than buying less.

That's more than I spend on 6 people (3 adults 3 teens!)

Oh and to answer your other question, I meal plan and do a big shop each week in Lidl then go to Tesco for the bits I couldn't get. Top up in the week for milk and maybe a couple of other bits.

2 adults, about £50 a week. Maybe extra if we need a big bag of dishwasher or laundry tablets. I’m very strict with batch cooking and never allowing food to go to waste. Never buy any branded products. We eat well though, always 5 a day usually more

Try and do a big shop as much as possible

I've tried the 79p deodorant before but I dint think they work as well.

3.50 a day per person is impressive
Even 2 eggs, a slice of bread and an apple for breakfast is over a pound now.
Then there is lunch and dinner and with teens snacks

Can you give a typical weekly meal plan ?

the rest was very basic bread, cereal, milk and veg…. And I have no idea how it added up to another £45

Might give Aldis another go. We used it for years but our local one seems to think it appropriate to leave things like chicken unrefrigerated.

Roughly £120 a week. Family of 4(kids 14 and 9). Used to be £100 but thats impossible now. That's an online shop of £70 at Tesco, plus Coop(staff discount) through out the week. I really have to meal plan now with some cheap meals in there though. Its getting ridiculous.

2 adults, 4 dogs. Spend approx £100 this includes some chicken or mince to add to dried dog food. All meals for 7 days.
