Does anyone kayak?

I've seen Decathlon are renting kayaks and I'm thinking of giving it a go.

Can anyone give me the basis?

Aside from the kayak, oars and life jacket what else is needed?

If you kayak where do you do it?

Do I need to hire a lake?

Is there a special permit for a river?

How safe is it?

Yes I kayak, we live on the Thames and have our own. You don't need much more than a kayak, ores and a life jacket. I dress depending on the weather, but to be honest I don't go out if its quite windy or raining.
I would search for a local kayaking club and see if you can have some lessons.
I had a few sessions just to learn technique. It is great fun especially on a lovely day. We don't lug our kayaks past locks, we go into the locks just like boats do and hold on to the ropes in the lock. We obviously don't need to catty them transport them either as we are straight on to the river.

I think there is a club at donnington bridge who go out on summer evenings and paddle to the pub
