To think period clots are normal?

I've had clots since I started menstruating. But I've read clots can be a sign of endometriosis or another issue.

I've always thought clots are normal and all women have them. Is that not the case? Do some women not have to suffer these? Should I be concerned?

I get clots, but I also have endometriosis, fibroids and PCOS.

Changethenamey · 03/04/2023 18:25

I have clots and everyone I’ve ever spoken to about periods has mentioned clots too so I think they’re normal to some degree.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/04/2023 18:26

Similarly always had them I only found out it wasn’t normal when I had a transcerverical scan. The best was getting them removed and gaining so much more time in my month and not being in pain!

mothertrucking · 03/04/2023 18:26

I always have clots during AF, I just presumed they're normal.

Hazey19 · 03/04/2023 18:26

I get clots too and dont have endometriosis. I presumed it was normal!

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 03/04/2023 18:27

Yep. They’re totally normal, sometimes they’re the result of the body trying to mitigate a heavier flow period by clotting. So long as you don’t have any other worrying symptoms, there’s usually nothing untoward about them.

SheliaTakeItBack · 03/04/2023 18:27

Clots are normal, any change in the size of clots should be looked at really to see why. I do have clots but I also have endo, most of them are seed size like a sesame seed others are occasionally bigger like an olive pit. The more clots I have the worse the period pain is for me, but that is the sesame clot ones.

Nellodee · 03/04/2023 18:28

I never had clots until my late forties. I developed fibroids and then my periods looked like the swamp scene from Stand By Me.

TempName247 · 03/04/2023 18:29

your period is partly tissue from your uterus lining so that sounds normal to me

JadeandGreen · 03/04/2023 18:32

I've always had clots too. Is it normal if they are the size of a 50p piece, or the length of the tampon?

Rosebud21 · 03/04/2023 18:33

I always had clots when I menstruated. I didn't have endometriosis. A couple of small fibroids were found when I was in my 30s fibroids, these resolved when I had a Mirena inserted.

Thehop · 03/04/2023 18:33

Always thought clits were normal, always had them x

You have more than one? I'm so envious! 😉

CrumpetsandJammmm · 03/04/2023 18:35

When I saw a gynaecologist last year for heavy periods he asked if I had any clots that were bigger than a 50p piece. I actually laughed at him. I thought that was completely normal to have all the time, but apparently not!

Pinksorrel · 03/04/2023 18:42

I have pcos and fibroids, but no clots. Not a single one ever (except lochia).

Favouritefruits · 03/04/2023 18:55

What! I didn’t know clots weren’t normal!

Honoraryuce · 03/04/2023 18:56

I think they are normal but the size can indicate a problem.

Newnamenewname109870 · 03/04/2023 19:00

How big? 5/10p piece occasionally is normal

ToBeOrNotToBee · 03/04/2023 19:01

They're normal. The blood will congeal as it passes.

Tumbleweed101 · 03/04/2023 19:16

I usually get a few small ones on my heavy day but they are never bigger than a 50p piece.

PeloMom · 03/04/2023 19:20

I have clots but not every period. I’d say 50% of the time. No endo, pcos or fibroids.

CornedBeef451 · 03/04/2023 19:38

Are the clots wet like after you have a nosebleed?

I get smallish, dryish chunks, like half dried, bloody snot. I have PCOS and am perimenopausal.

itsgettingweird · 03/04/2023 19:46

Clots themselves aren't an issue.

They are just caused by a heavy flow and so if you get a period of heavy flow within your cycle you'll get clots.

However when I got clots I got 4-5 in the space of 10 minutes that all looked like they'd come from a jelly pot.

This would happen 4-5 times a day and my periods lasted for weeks in the end.

I had adenomyosis and had a hysterectomy last year.

Hesma · 03/04/2023 19:50

It is normal, they are the womb lining coming away.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 03/04/2023 19:53

I used to think clots and period cramps were normal!

They’re not though…

I don’t have either any more after doing a heap of stuff to try to help my recurrent losses.

No baby yet but at least my periods are so much nicer now - I didn’t even realise I came on today as I didn’t have any pain and still don’t. Fresh red blood only, no clots.
