Fucking Cyclists

I live in a very rural area that is super popular with cyclists. All of the roads around me are narrow, bendy, single track lanes - no white lines. Wherever I go I get stuck behind cyclists. I accept this, always leave extra time for my journeys and never drive aggressively.

The issue is that the cyclists always seem to try and wave me past when I don’t feel it is safe to overtake. Either into blind corners, or when the road is too narrow so would necessitate going onto the verges which are rutted and full of hidden rocks and pot holes - I’m not willing to risk my tyres driving at pace along them. Obviously I just ignore them but this seems to infuriate them.

I’ve just returned from yet another journey where I was behind a pair of cyclists for several miles. The cyclist at the rear kept waving me on and when I didn’t go past she seemed to get increasingly angry about it, gesticulating etc. when I finally did pass, she screamed fucking twat at me and gave me the Vs.

Nice. So basically that’s my ‘thanks’ for trailing patiently behind them for 10 minutes and almost doubling the duration of my journey.

disclaimer: I realise that not all cyclists do this, but there seems to be a significant enough number of them around here to make this sort of thing a weekly occurrence.

AIBU to overtake cyclists when I’m good and ready, and think that some of them need to learn a few lessons about manners and road safety before they go out on their bikes?

The cyclists round here don't seem to be able to observe the give way to oncoming vehicles signs in our village. They must all need their breaks checking.

Wow just wow right back at you to you wishing death on my child?

These are adults who are cycling dangerous. They get what they deserve.

Dreamysaurus · 03/04/2023 17:18

Oh my goodness. What a dark end to the thread 🤯

It was a reply to someone above saying exactly that. I managed to fail to quote them, and you can't edit posts on MN 🙄

If they feeling intimidated or nervous about the car behind them, they should have pulled in to let you pass, rather than try to encourage you to make an unsafe manoeuvre.

It sounds as though they weren't experienced enough on the roads to tackle a country lane such as you describe, OP. Either that or they were just rude, which is as likely, given their peremptory behaviour.

The point was if it was your child cycling and they were hit and killed by a driver, would you be rejoicing too? Since you said you rejoice every time it happens to a cyclist...

I didn't wish your child dead. That would make me as bad as you. I just pointed out it could be your child. I'm not the one celebrating people being killed.

I seriously hope you never pass your test, you're vile and your clear anger issues would make you a shit driver.

We don't need people like you on the roads.

Onefootinthegroove · 03/04/2023 17:22

I not in the UK, here we have wide cycle lanes that are properly maintained......................................................that some cyclists still ignore to ride in the road .
Still better than the UK cycle tourist that DH nearly met head on who had gone the wrong way around a roundabout 😧

nomoremerlot · 03/04/2023 17:23

@TitterYeeNot you do realise that Lycra clad person who you despise, could be the person who saves your child's life? Would you still despise them?

lljkk · 03/04/2023 17:24

when I came up behind them, I assumed initially it was a car's rear lights.

Complaining that cyclists are TOO VISIBLE? Only on MN, maybe.

The real problem on this thread is the Us vs. Them attitude. Fierce tribal identities. Most adult cyclists, especially the ones in lycra, also own cars & drive them regularly.

Dreamstate · 03/04/2023 17:16

Lets hope you never pass your test. I wish I could report you to the DVLA for this so you never get a driving licence because quite frankly no-one should be allowed to drive if this is what they truly believe.

Calm down dear, you’ll be safe enough around me as long as you don’t cycle like a dangerous twat. Deal?

AbsoIutelyLovely · 03/04/2023 17:24

I also live rurally, waved into the path of a huge lorry the other day. Glad I didn’t take the advice 😳

SpanielSprint · 03/04/2023 17:24

I don’t mean to tar all cyclists with the same brush, and I know there are plenty out there who ride very responsibly. But this waving cars on business does seem to be quite prevalent in the population.

I do cycle and I am also a driver too. Your anger is disgusting and you seriously should never be allowed to drive if you have that much anger and hatred towards other road users.

LakieLady · 03/04/2023 17:25

Finalstar · 03/04/2023 16:37

I spend a lot of time driving in rural Yorkshire. It's entirely possible to not be able to safely overtake for 10 minutes (or more). Quite often there are limited places where you can safely overtake anyway, and sod's law dictates there is oncoming traffic when you reach these spots. Many of the lanes are very narrow and twisty with lots of hairpin turns and blind corners. Add in high hedges or trees where you cannot see over the tops to view oncoming traffic from further round the bend, and you get the picture!

I know a hairpin bend just like you describe on one of the roads that takes you north from Hawes. It's quite scary, all you can do is go very slowly, and hope that any traffic coming the other way is going very slowly too.

Plus there's the sheep factor. They don't give a shit and just stand in the middle of the roads.

ProudToBeANorthener · 03/04/2023 17:26

We moved; my youngest was terrified by the abuse that we received, the banging on the car roof and I’m the car driver. This was from the cyclists and he wanted to use the barely, single track country lanes to do time trials🤷‍♀️

Well you have 👏

Your title fucking cyclist, did just that!

You and @TitterYeeNot are clearly cut from the same cloth.

Exactly! Lost count of the amount of times I’ve been waved on around a blind corner, ignored them (thankfully) and then found that I would have pulled out into oncoming traffic had I tried to overtake!

This was my first thought. I would love to go out cycling but don't like the thought of holding up an angry line of drivers. The only way round that would be to let people pass then carry on surely?

Well they're all on the Strava app now and all competing for their place on the leader board or their own PB. They won't stop.

OneTC · 03/04/2023 17:27

I actively rejoice when I hear of one coming a cropper with a juggernaut. Let me guess, they expected the 18-wheeler to get out of THEIR way.

Crikey
