To thing that making a bed is the most pointless exercise?

You wake, you throw back the covers and they stay there. That airs the bed.

12 to 18 hours later you get back in said bed, and pull the covers over. Job done.

Why the need to "make the bed"? My mother would occasionally be running for the bus because she had to make the beds before she left the house. Making the beds first thing in the morning was considered, and still is it seems, to be a standard. Why?!

As an adult who uses a bed to sleep in and bed room as ....well a room for a bed why would I waste precious sleep time to get up ten minutes early to make sure that the pillows are straight?

SabbatWheel · 03/04/2023 01:22

Because it takes about 30s to throw a duvet back over, smooth it down and plump pillows, plus it makes the room look tidier.

ClaraBourne · 03/04/2023 01:24

I like to sort the washing on a nice tidy bed. The room looks tidier. I like to pull back the covers to get into bed, not make it, then pull them back.

Think of a hotel, they don't leave the beds looking like that. A made bed is inviting.

That said, I'd never delay my morning to make the bed.

DoNotEatPickles · 03/04/2023 01:28

Making my bed makes my tiny bedroom feel bigger. Also means the cat only puts fluff, dust and grubby paws on the bedspread (which gets taken off at night) not the duvet, pillows and sheet.

XenoBitch · 03/04/2023 01:30

Pointless here. My dog just unmakes it all.

BlueHeartMelody · 03/04/2023 01:30

Just making the bed and decluttering the bedside drawers etc. makes things just seem more tidier. Also psychologically, coming back to a tidy room and not having to think of tidying up before sleeping can be quite relaxing. That’s why hotel rooms are so lovely.

coffy11 · 03/04/2023 01:30

Cause it looks neater and makes me feel organised

MavisMcMinty · 03/04/2023 01:32

I’d say ironing is a far greater waste of time than making the bed. I don’t do either.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/04/2023 01:33

Being tidy is important to me and my husband. Making the bed, which takes all of 10 seconds, makes your room look nice and is a good start to the day.

Can I be your best friend? Ironing is an alien concept in this house too!

HeddaGarbled · 03/04/2023 01:36

In the olden days (possibly your mother’s?) making a bed involved tucking in sheets and blankets and then straightening the decorative top cover, but I completely agree. How long does folding down or straightening a duvet take? 1 second? 2? I can only assume that those people who make a big deal out of “making the bed” must have all those decorative cushions and runners which they throw on the floor every night.

MavisMcMinty · 03/04/2023 01:43

The last thing I ironed was the dress I wore to my Mum’s funeral in 2011, using her iron and ironing board. I have both of those things somewhere in my house but no idea where.

BOYBANDLOVER · 03/04/2023 01:43

I've never pulled the quilt right up as i feel it doesn't get aired out
by doing that your trapping stale air.

by getting straight out then covering up the sheet nothings aired out properly

i do make it neat half way down though, not just covers thrown off
and spray a very watered down outdoors fresh fabric softener on the bottom sheet

i do change my bed(super king so nota easy job) twice a week though and have to have specific bedding(super soft teddy or 100% brushed cotton) becasue of my sons sensory needs as he sleeps with me

AndTheSurveySays · 03/04/2023 02:00

I've always thought that beds should be left to air during the day to discourage bedbugs/ mites etc.

Divorcedalongtime · 03/04/2023 02:07

Agree! Don’t make the bed, seems pointless. Also don’t iron.

HermioneWeasley · 03/04/2023 02:17

Duvets folded back here to led the bed air

PinkSyCo · 03/04/2023 02:27

I stopped making my bed years ago when I read that it helps to prevent bed bugs. Giving the beds a really got airing everyday makes perfect sense when you think about it.

DramaAlpaca · 03/04/2023 02:28

I couldn't agree more, OP.

And I only iron if it's unavoidable.

FabFitFifties · 03/04/2023 02:55

Bedbugs can't just appear - whether you make your bed, air it, or never everr change it. You have to bring them home from an infested bed/room. If you do, airing certainly won't get rid of them. I make my bed in less than 30 seconds because i care what the room looks like.

Livedandlearned · 03/04/2023 02:59

Bedbugs are really hard to get rid of, by specialists

Airing the bed makes no difference to them,

I’m just telling you what I read. Dust mites too prefer neat, sweaty beds.

Theoldwoman · 03/04/2023 03:07

I always make my bed as do my adult kids.

A bedroom always looks tidier if the bed is made, just like a kitchen always looks tidier if the dishes are done.

BMXsummoner · 03/04/2023 03:19

I like to smooth out the bottom sheet and then pull the top sheet and cotton blanket up after it’s aired out for a bit (too hot for a duvet where I live!). Makes it feel nicer and crisp when I get back in at night. Only do this on weekends and WFH days though.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/04/2023 03:23

I agree with you, OP.

As for those mentioning hotels, surely that's because the bed and room is 'new' and clean for you and you don't want to get into a bed that was previously slept in by a stranger. I can't remember ever staying in a hotel where they make your bed for you on subsequent mornings, if you're staying for more than one night.

In the same way that you don't box up your toaster (with the polystyrene bits at the side that never seem to fit back properly) after every time you've used it, BUT you would be very unlikely to want to buy a new toaster at its full retail price if it weren't boxed up and obviously unused by anybody else.

I'd also extend my personal perplexed feelings to keeping two dozen 'display' cushions on the bed at all times when it isn't being slept in!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/04/2023 03:27

A bedroom always looks tidier if the bed is made

But does it matter to people who get up out of the bed and are then out all day, downstairs in the evening and only go back up late in order to sleep in it again? Who is there to see or care if it's tidy or not, in that scenario?!
