To thing that making a bed is the most pointless exercise?

You wake, you throw back the covers and they stay there. That airs the bed.

12 to 18 hours later you get back in said bed, and pull the covers over. Job done.

Why the need to "make the bed"? My mother would occasionally be running for the bus because she had to make the beds before she left the house. Making the beds first thing in the morning was considered, and still is it seems, to be a standard. Why?!

As an adult who uses a bed to sleep in and bed room as ....well a room for a bed why would I waste precious sleep time to get up ten minutes early to make sure that the pillows are straight?

I always make my bed as do my adult kids.

A bedroom always looks tidier if the bed is made, just like a kitchen always looks tidier if the dishes are done.

Who cares if your bedroom doesn’t look tidy when there’s no one in it? 😂 And comparing not making a bed to not doing the dishes is just silly.

HoppingPavlova · 03/04/2023 03:42

I don’t. In addition to it being a massive waste of time, it’s not as hygienic as letting it air for a long period. Also, we generally do a spider check to make sure no nasties have crawled in (we have had the odd funnel web in the house here), so seems redundant to pull it all back to check before bed. We don’t have top sheets, just fitted and duvet covers, blankets on top of that in winter, so makes a check easy.

You can’t eat off dirty dishes though, so of course you need to clean the dishes! You can get into an unmade bed and pull the covers over you though. They are really not the same thing.

Disco2023 · 03/04/2023 03:49

We air ours but most of the we pull the duvet back over and tidy it up later in the day. Takes no time.

Furries · 03/04/2023 03:51

Firstly, life is too short!

When I get up, I plump the pillows. I give the duvet a very quick shake and then it’s folded back to let the bed air all day. When I get in to bed, I just unfold the duvet.

If I was having photos taken to sell the house then I would stage a made bed.

I gave up on ironing bedding at least a decade ago.life really is too short for that shit!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/04/2023 03:51

On a side note, if you've both been farting in there all night, as on the other current thread, you would definitely want to leave it unmade to air all day, rather than trap the putrid whiffs inside, waiting to 'delight' you again on your return!

I don't bother. No one sees my bedroom but me, so who cares.

echt · 03/04/2023 03:53

I leave my bedding pulled back and the windows open for airing every day. If I make it upstairs for any reason later I might dress the bed later, but otherwise, why?

mathanxiety · 03/04/2023 03:53

Well so is washing your clothes and indeed washing yourself, if you look at it that way.

No because not washing yourself and your clothes would be unhygienic wouldn’t it? Hmm

StampOnTheGround · 03/04/2023 04:41

We never make the bed here, it's not exactly a massive mess if it's not done and who cares if it looks tidy? Nobody see's it all day till we get back in it to sleep! I've never understood the need!

Ps also no ironing!

coffeemoon · 03/04/2023 04:43

Don't make it then 😂

One of the perks of adulthood is you get to decide.

magicthree · 03/04/2023 05:32

I totally agree about the bed making. I just rise from it in the morning, and get back into it at night without doing a thing.

Ironing however is something I always do - but I wear a lot of natural fabrics which tend to need it. I don't mind ironing and would far rather do it than dusting, hoovering, cooking etc.

Tlolljs · 03/04/2023 05:44

I make my bed without fail every day. I don’t care if nobody else sees it, I see it and I care.
I do ironing too, shock horror.

WeWereInParis · 03/04/2023 05:53

I agree. And I also don't iron. My DD (3.5) was at her grandparents' house the other day and MIL was ironing and DD asked her what it was 🙈

I do housework that keeps the house tidy, and clean. I've never thought that an unmade bed was particularly messy, just not very neat.

Pyaar · 03/04/2023 05:56

About hotels - turn down service is a thing so the pulled back duvet is supposed to be more welcoming/practical, right?

OP yanbu. It looks tidier when made but i don't care much about that

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 03/04/2023 06:09

Bed maker here. Although like a similar poster, I do throw back covers when I get out to let it air while getting ready, then use 30 seconds making it before I leave (wouldn’t risk missing the bus for it though!)

I do it mainly because I like to come back to a made bed at night. Plus I must sleep weird compared to some of you because if I don’t make it, it’s like my pillow goes lumpy in a weird way and the duvet shifts inside the cover so I’ll have bunches of duvet at one and empty fabric at the other. Fuck knows what I’m doing during the night to get it in that state 🤷‍♀️😀

loislovesstewie · 03/04/2023 06:10

I air the bed and then go back and make it properly. I have a bottom fitted sheet, I smooth that out, I have a top sheet and I smooth that out and make sure it's tucked in at the bottom, smooth out the duvet, fold the top sheet over the top of the duvet and then put the throw over the bottom of the bed . Plump up the pillows and then put the cushions back. Takes 2 minutes, looks more inviting , the room looks neater . It's just a personal opinion ,if you don't want to; don't do it. I don't fret about it ,but that is how I like it. My mum actually took all the sheets ,blankets etc off the bed and hung them over the window when I was a kid to air them .She just made the bed late morning, so the bed was aired properly.

sandgrown · 03/04/2023 06:24

I just get out , plump the pillows and fold the duvet back neatly to air the bed . My son has asthma so have always done this to the beds though now he is adult he rarely makes his bed but I leave him to it .

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/04/2023 06:36

I pull the duvet right back when I get up and open the windows wider while I shower, to air the bed/room I don't make my bed until I'm dressed and face and hair done. I like it made because it's tidy, and I like the room to look tidy 🤷‍♀️ You do you!

BHRK · 03/04/2023 06:38

I never make the bed

emptythelitterbox · 03/04/2023 06:41

It probably would look nicer to do it, but I don't.

It takes far more than 30 seconds to make the bed as I ransack every blanket, sheet, pillow at night while I sleep.

KIcked off on the floor, twisted all around into a pile.

Emigratingimmigrant · 03/04/2023 07:15

Agreed.
Plus you are not supposed to make bed as soon as you get up anyway and who has time to come back later ....

IglesiasPiggl · 03/04/2023 07:21

I make beds and I iron, because both those things make me and my house look and feel fresh and tidy. I have no problem making time for either of these tasks, making a bed takes less than a minute and ironing about 20 mins per week. I WFH and my DC are teenagers so easy to fit in this amount of time.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/04/2023 07:22

I pull back the duvet to air first thing and then make the bed before I start work a couple of hours later. The room looks tidier and I like getting into a made bed. I also iron.
