Am I a sore lover?

I recently entered a craft competition. The idea was supposed to be inspired by the company's kitchen products. I was pleased with my entry which was really professional and also in the photo I showed their product being used. On top of that, I actually came up with a bloody good idea for a future product.

The results were announced. The winners were okay, but I noticed a couple of things: 1. they didn't bother to mention the company product. 2. They (3 out of 4) copied the company style (which is a bit edgy, risque) ie. nothing to do with kitchen products, but plenty of tits etc on show 3. they had a sob story (I made this while I was supporting my mum through chemo etc)

It may be they just picked the winners out of a hat, in which case of course IABU. But I do have a sob story (just don't feel like sharing it with the world, and anyway didn't think it was relevant) my photo actually showed their product being used; and forgive me if I didn't see how creating a BDSM diorama would add to the challenge.

If it had actually included something to do with the products (spatula spanking? Licking whipped cream?) I could understand, but we're literally talking nipple tassels and ball gags.

It felt like they had an agenda to promote the edgiest, most subversive 'winner' ? I wish I'd known because I could have crafted some really interesting stuff with some whips and a feather duster!

I mean this ever so kindly but are you just pissed off about it and having a rant, or do you think this is something a bit deeper?

Also love the typo of “sore lover” - presumably to do with all the whips and chains…

if the other entries followed the company style, and you didn’t, it’s not really surprising you didn’t win, is it? What you thought of as ‘professional’ could be seen by the judges as ‘doesn’t know our brand’

I think this is it, they were after something in tune with their company style. Whereas I was more about their actual products, current & future. I guess its just a different point of view.

Sore lover indeed! Also, I'm struggling to imagine how the sob story goes with BDSM?! "These nipple tassels were inspired by Mum's mastectomy, and ball gag by dear old Dad's prostate cancer"?!

Anyway in all seriousness, if you enjoy this sort of craft/product imagination stuff, maybe enter a few more other competitions, I'm sure you'll come out on top (!) in at least one of them.

I think the deeper thing might be that I just don't 'get' branding and am irritated by the whole marketing stuff. At work I pass on any marketing jobs because I'm no good at it.

I like products because of their usefulness, and rarely buy into images and brands. You're right, I just didn't understand the point. Next time I will include something more subversive 😆

I think this is it. They’ve run a competition to market their brand. Your ad doesn’t fit the brand, ergo, it won’t win.

I may have changed some of the details to make it less outing 😀 but its essentially a company which makes non-erotic products, but they like to promote themselves as young/edgy/non-mainstream

All true apart from minor details. Don't know why I'd want to make up a thread agreeing that IABU, admit to being a sore lover/loser, and risk having my craft skills criticised as well lol.
