Just don't see the point, yet every advice says to indeed bother.

I do but for vanity

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/04/2023 14:28

I don't, I only wear it when I'm abroad. It's Northern England, I don't burn (olive skin) and could use the vitamin D. I also have sensitive skin so SPF causes sore skin.

mybeautifuloak · 02/04/2023 14:28

I wear spf 50 all year every day. Whilst UVB is lower during winter, it's still being present and UVA rays are consistent all year around. UVA penetrates glass and clouds and is responsible for skin aging.

Trollsinmyeggbox · 02/04/2023 14:35

Spf 50 on my face all year round here.

PousseyNotMoira · 02/04/2023 14:39

I think a lot of posters seem to be fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of sun protection. It’s not just to stop you from burning, so time of year is irrelevant.

Moisturising and wearing sunscreen every day is just basic skincare in lots of the world, including the bit I’m from. I remember being astonished by how rapidly and poorly people’s skin aged, when I moved to the U.K. Then I learned how poorly a lot of you care for your skin and all became clear!

I wear factor 50 on my face and neck all year round...North Yorkshire

Yanbu. We need every scrap of vitamin D we can get in this country.

Supplement? I do, my friends do, my dad does
We were all deficient, even my friend who runs a stables and is outdoors 8-6 daily
I needed a high dose course and now take 4000IU daily

Beeswood · 02/04/2023 14:44

I have roseacea and use it all the year round.

goldenotter · 02/04/2023 14:45

sunscreen apparently really important for if you work on a computer - the rays from that can cause ageing. So all year round it should be. Not that I am perfect, mind you!

CaledonianDream · 02/04/2023 15:04

Wear when the UV over 3 or in summer in prolonged periods outdoors. It's not about sun or heat. Purely the UV range.

Don't use "run of the mill" suncream, most have stacks of chemicals that you're constantly rubbing in and reapplying. Find one that is high in zinc and low in chemicals as an ingredient list. Wear a hat and rub suncream on the back of your hands when driving/cycling. Also use sunglasses that have proper protection. If they're just darkened it opens your pupils and actually let's more UV in.

I wear spf 50 every day on my face and I have done since I was about 20. My family think I'm mad.

I'm the eldest of 3 and neither of my siblings ever wear sunscreen except on holiday. I live in London and they live in Dublin - we are all extremely pale. My skin is smoother, has fewer freckles, and fewer signs of aging than my siblings. I look younger than both of them. I put this down entirely to sunscreen.

mynewusername2023 · 02/04/2023 15:13

I found an amazing make up primer that has SPF 30 in it. It's called unseen sunscreen by super goop. I never use to wear SPF unless I was on holiday as I rarely sit in the sun and I'm in the north. However since finding this, I wear it as my primer and then I know I've got sunscreen covered without it being another step in my routine.

WhoWants2Know · 02/04/2023 15:17

I do wear sunscreen on my face year round because I get melasma on my cheeks. But I also have a bad vitamin D deficiency as a result. 🤷‍♀️

transformandriseup · 02/04/2023 15:18

I only wear SPF moisturiser in the winter but the UV level is 3 today even though it's cloudy.

BigButtons · 02/04/2023 15:21

UVA rays are the same all year. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining and over cast in the middle of winter
. I wear spf 50 every single day of the year. I have done for at least a couple of decades now. I am 55.

avocadotofu · 02/04/2023 15:23

It will have an impact on how your skin ages. So it depends on whether that matters to you. Wearing it seems like an easy way to protect your skin from being damaged and I wear it all year round.

Thoughtful2355 · 02/04/2023 15:24

ive only just started doing it, wish id done it sooner. even if its cold we still have a sun

Sapphire387 · 02/04/2023 15:24

Most SPF's only last a couple of hours though, don't they? Hence the advice to reapply regularly. So unless people are planning to slap on their SPF moisturiser over their makeup throughout the day...

Zinc is also a chemical. Not all chemicals are out to get you.

There are plenty that can be sprayed over make up and there are clear balm type sticks that work over it too, depending on what type of make up you wear.

raincamepouringdown · 02/04/2023 15:32

I wear it year round, started in my early 20s. Even just face lotions with suncream in them for the winter makes a massive difference over time. My skin looks much better than most people my age, much less sun damage and aging.

sst1234 · 02/04/2023 15:34

This thread shows the lack of awareness about protection from UV. Sunscreen is a must whatever time of the year or whatever the temperature.

Delatron · 02/04/2023 15:38

Like a few posters have said - UVA rays (the ageing ones) are present at the same strength all the year round and the same at different latitudes. So whilst you won’t get burnt in winter here (or make Vitamin D) the cumulative effects of UVA rays will age you. These rats penetrate clouds and glass.

So yes I wear SPF (with UVA protection in it) all year round even on rainy days.

Take a vitamin D supplement - you won’t get any though putting your face in the sun in Winter. From April if it’s sunny I like to get some sun on arms and legs for vitamin D (without burning) but won’t ever put my face in the sun. I use tretinoin too.

If you don’t care about ageing then don’t bother. I reapply too. But I’m outdoors most with dog walks/running.

Delatron · 02/04/2023 15:38

Rays not rats 🤣

This won’t be the cause of your vitamin D deficiency.

Everybody in the UK should take vitamin D from Oct - April or risk being deficient.

If you never go in the sun in summer then carry on all year round and monitor levels.
