To ask for the best high protein shake to stop hunger

Hey there! So, I'm currently 1 stone overweight, which may not sound like much, but as a menopausal 5.1" lady, it's a real challenge to shift! I'm doing everything I can to stay on track - including exercise and healthy eating (low carb is my go-to). However, one day a week I have a super busy schedule with back-to-back client sessions and an activity in the evening that doesn't allow food. It's tough to get a decent meal in during that day, and I end up resorting to bad habits. I'm really keen to find a high protein shake that will keep me full throughout the day, and I would love some suggestions for a ready-made option or a powder I can mix up at home. I appreciate any advice you can offer - thanks so much!

Huel Black works for me. It’s not really a ‘protein shake’ as such so there’s a bit more nutritional heft to it.

Some people don’t get on with Huel so try a sample before you commit to entire sacks of it!

Kinetica protein shakes are good post-exercise. They’re definitely not meal replacements though.

What about Bulk? It doesn't seem to have been mentioned here.

I use bulk, the protein works and my protein. Pretty interchangeable
Bulk is worth a look as they've literally just sent me a text about their sale!
Clear whey is another product I use to top up on protein, it's basically like squash

CiaraLiara · 02/04/2023 11:32

Thank you @Rebel2, that's helpful.
What is clear whey?

I don't like protein powders. Too sweet!

I whizz up oats, bannana, yogurt, peanut butter, and a handful of frozen fruit. Drink later ( needs a stir )

A friend of mine does a 'green' version - avocado, bannana, frozen spinach cubes, peanut butter, squeeze of lime juice - I haven't tried it but she loves it!

I'd also keep a bag of mixed fruit and nuts to hand.

Still chuckling at this 😄 Is it peak MN ?

I also put granola, greek yogurt , sliced bananas and a handful of frozen berries in a lidded cup the night before a busy day.

Next day it's lovely, creamy and filling.

Melassa · 02/04/2023 11:43

I use Bulk, I get their vegan protein powder for when I’m working out. They also do whey ones but I don’t get on with milky stuff and the whey ones I find too sweet. Are they filling as a meal replacement? No idea as I use them when working out so probably have unnatural levels of hunger.

Never heard of that @Rebel2. On a daily basis, I try to drink around 2 litres of water. To make it palatable I add some lemon robinsons, which I am sure it's not ideal, but I add a tiny amount to a whole litre. Is that what this product is for, like once I week I can use it to flavour the water I drink and it would be adding to my protein intake and therefore contributing to making me feel full?

I really like Protein works meal replacement - 20g protein and 400 cals which is enough for an actual meal. Full of good stuff like oats, flax, coconut oil etc. Really tasty and satisfying.

BigButtons · 02/04/2023 12:06

It’s a good idea that you want to up your protein intake. High protein diets are extremely important for us as we age. I use my protein clear whey isolate and bulk protein pancake mixes. You need about a got protein for every pound you weigh. It’s a lot but it’s necessary for your body as you age.

Badger1970 · 02/04/2023 12:18

I tend to use protein bars more - I really like the Phd high protein low sugar ones, the small bars are only 99 calories but don't taste too bad (I get the peanut butter or white chocolate cookie flavours). They hit the spot for me mid afternoon before I take the dogs out and keep me going then until tea (type 2 diabetic).

Protein shakes are really variable.. I tried the Slimfast Vitality ones recently and they taste quite nice but aren't very filling for the calorie content. USN diet fuel ultralean are probably the best ones I've found, and are low sugar; or Purition but these are really high calorie even though they're more natural.

Yes exactly

Literally no where at all reputable recommendations an intake of a pound of protein for every pound in weight!!

BIWI · 02/04/2023 12:28

@CiaraLiara the Fast800 meal replacement shakes here might work for you. They're appropriately low carb and definitely hit the mark in terms of being high protein - they also do keep you full between meals.

Meal Replacement Shakes - The Fast 800

Unlike other meal replacement shakes, The Fast 800 shakes combine healthy fats with protein and fibre, while being low in carbs and free from added sugars.

You might like to check out the Peter Attia podcasts. He has many highly reputable scientists and sports nutritionists who all say the same thing as far as aging and protein intake are concerned.
As we age our bodies become less and less efficient at processing and using protein to help maintain muscle mass. When insulin is still being used in growth the body needs relatively little protein.
you might like to listen to his podcast with Dr Layman in particular.

Thelnebriati · 02/04/2023 12:33

I don't like any of the shakes, they are either too sweet or contain sweeteners. I whizz up some almond milk, skim milk powder, yoghurt and food flavouring to make a yoghurt drink.

QuintanaRoo · 02/04/2023 12:35

Surely it’s a gram of protein per pound, not a pound of protein per pound.

I can’t eat my body weight in anything in a day, not even chocolate 😂

mrsfennel · 02/04/2023 12:36

I lost a stone on Slim fast , I know its seen as quite old fashioned. But f you make with milk its more filling and tastes quite nice. I used to add whole oats and half a banana.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/04/2023 12:37

Hmm, Green and Blacks milk .....

mrsfennel · 02/04/2023 12:37

Meant to add I use to put less powder so it tasted smoother and less grainy.

OrangeKettle · 02/04/2023 12:37

I love the “dietary do-gooders” on here. I’d put money on the fact they “have massive salads, are full after half a meal”. Yet secretly sit and stuff an Easter egg.

I use shakes because I can’t eat breakfast, oats give me dirrhoea, I can’t eat at my desk, I darent “talk to my employer” two weeks into a new job, and in my second job, I have patients. I can hardly sit there eating a yogurt in between patients, but I can take a mouthful of a drink as they walk out the door.

wft is wrong with people on this site?

OP, I use pea protein (chocolate, because a friend gave me that flavour!) with almond milk and frozen fruit. And spinach if I have it.

Viviennemary · 02/04/2023 12:38

Slimfast are ok. Not the powder that's horrible. The coffee flavour is quite nice. Do they count as a protein shake.

CiaraLiara · 02/04/2023 12:41

My understanding from what I am reading is that SlimFast shakes are full of sugar

Another vote for Purition. Good ingredients , subtle flavours and not sweet. Bit pricey though!
