Please help me fellow metformin takers!!

I was prescribed metformin over 5 years ago due to pcos and fertility issues. Helped conceive my DC's. I had a bit of an upset stomach to begin with but nothing major.

Fast forward to Christmas and I got prescribed them again but this time to help regulate my periods and my weight. I took them for a week or so and had a slight tummy upset again but nothing too bad. I stopped taking them as I got really poorly with flu and they just kind of fell of my radar. This morning I started taking them again. I took one 500mg tablet. I'm supposed to take that dose for a week then double it and so on.

But... omg the sickness and stomach upset today is insane. I took it at the same time in the morning that I used to, just after my breakfast. I did have toast for breakfast which probably wasn't my best idea, but then had a Caesar salad for lunch. Within about an hour of lunch I suddenly just soiled myself without any warning, it was just pure liquid (sorry for tmi!!). Since then my stomach has been gurgling and I've felt so sick I can't even lie down.

I have got a slight cold at the moment so I took the tablet along with a sinutab tablet so I don't know if that made any difference? But it's been over 12 hours now and it's getting worse not better. Please tell me there is something I can do to help it subside?

I'll also add that I really don't think it's a bug or anything as I haven't been around anybody with one and nobody else in the household is I'll.

Ask your GP to change you to modified release metformin and it will likely solve the problems. Metformin can be horrible stuff!

Thanks. I think those were the ones I was on originally but just got given the normal ones this time. Never had a reaction like this but there's no way I can keep taking them as I'd be mortified if it happened at work!

Yep, ask for prolonged release ones. The normal ones gave me nausea but I’m fine with the prolonged release version.
