We are due a long haul flight on Tuesday. First time flying with kids and safe to say I'm a little nervous. DS1 is 8 but on the spectrum and I know there will be a lot of triggers for him. DS2 is 4 and going through the terrible threes a year late.

My question is about water bottles. My brother, a frequent long haul flyer with kids, tells me most people let the kids take their water bottles through security by taking a blind eye kind of approach.

Has anyone else experienced this? I just don't know whether to risk it and loose the water bottles or just buy bottled water the other side?

Literally never heard of this. I'd take empty kids bottles through and fill them after security

Rtmhwales · 01/04/2023 18:48

No you won't be able to take it through. But you could take an empty one through and refill it on the other side at a fountain surely.

What airport are you flying from?
You can take an empty water bottle through and fill up at the water stations.

ThreeTrebles · 01/04/2023 18:49

You're allowed to take empty water bottles through security. Most airports I've been to have water fountains at the other side where you can fill up before boarding.

Reusable water bottle? It would have to be empty I'd imagine. You might find a water dispenser after security or you could buy a bottle of water in a newsagent and fill it up then

I think all UK airports will have a free bottle fill up fountain after security - Gatwick definitely does

Dortmunder · 01/04/2023 18:52

Manchester does too.

Take it empty and fill it up.

I always fly with an empty bottle and there's several water fountains and dispensers on the other side to fill up with

Don't take them full though, they'll make you throw the whole bottle away, not just pour it out!

My kids have had full water bottles confiscated.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 01/04/2023 18:55

It’s fine to take empty bottles through and refill them once you’re past security.

Thank you all! Will happily take empty ones and refill.
