AIBU to think rap is crap?

I just heard In My Hood by Ice Spice on the radio with absolutely stupid lyrics.

Go back to the late 70s and up to mid 80s and it's good. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Sugarhill Gang etc.

Now it's rap mixed with grime and stupid lyrics that we'd be disciplined about if we said this in the workplace. Bitches, hoes, drugs and knives aren't art, they're a quick fix for talentless people to get attention by thinking it's oh so clever to be a gangster's moll.

And it's dreary and boring too.

Yeah you’re right. And all country music is crap too - I know this because I heard ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ once, so that’s how I know every country song is shit.

Maybe you should try listening to several different albums and artists before you make a sweeping judgment on the whole genre? It makes you sound a bit ignorant to insist all rap/grime is only about ‘bitches, knives, drugs, and hoes’ when there are fantastic pieces out there like Dave’s ‘Three Rivers’ and ‘Lesley’ or some of Stormzy’s songs (not all) and lots of classic American rap.

Thank you.

I love machine gun Kelly ( going to see him again in London soon )
Yeah a lot of the older lyrics are a bit spicy as it were but aren't most rappers telling their story as it were

Mgk is trash with a few exceptions. Also not really a rapper since he got slaughtered by eminem

Grumpi · 01/04/2023 18:06

Art is subjective.

Id rather listen to a screeching toddler than Adele or god forbid Ed Sheeran / Lewis Capaldi (although I think he is an amazing and hilarious person).

But millions of people love them.

Im gonna guess that you’re not the target audience of modern grime if you’re reminiscing about De La Soul and Public Enemy (great of course, but 30 years old now).

It must resonate with many people if there’s a market for it, not my bag but we can appreciate the art form without wishing to be part of it. It’s not for you, simple as that really

1FootInTheRave · 01/04/2023 18:42

My fave music is 90's and 00's hip hop/rap.

Am shit at it on karaoke though 😳

foxlover47 · 01/04/2023 18:46

@Male101 ha ha harping on about Eminem all these years on , educate yourself , he's really trash yeah , successful movie career , back to back number 1 albums , European tours , owns a coffee shop and a nail lacquer brand , wins awards , nominated for a Grammy , switches music genres with ease , D&G all over him to style him
Whether you like him or not his career is going great
Wish my life was going as trash as his 🙄

parklimes · 01/04/2023 19:10

His career may be going great . But he isnt a great rapper, he has a few good songs. He isnt a lyricist, Eminem is the best selling rapper ,and still considered one of the best that's ever done it by some of the best that ever did it . Also multiple awards, multiple multi platinum albums yes stll Harped on after all these years for a reason

Ilkleymoor · 01/04/2023 19:35

Tierra whack and little simz

MoonOverBroadway · 01/04/2023 19:38

I’m a 90s hip hop geek Grin.

You don’t have to like rap, but it’s not all ‘crap’ or violent or ‘gangster’. There are many different genres of rap and types of artist.

You won’t hear much decent rap on mainstream radio.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/04/2023 19:40

Any gentle is shit if you listen to the shit bits of it.

Rap is great, proper protest music when it's done well.

Ah yes... What a lovely racist thread on predominantly black rappers. This is very on brand for mumsnet.

You can not like rap, but to call it all crap? Come on now, surely you see how racist that sounds?

There's lots of music I think is crap. Rap music, jazz, heavy metal.

I must be a well rounded bigot then.

Oh well.

Agreed

Twospaniels · 01/04/2023 20:34

Absolutely agree with you - currently watching Frank Sinatra on BBC2 - now that’s singing and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t think there’s anyone right now who actually ‘sings’

VeryApple · 01/04/2023 20:38

Frank Sinatra was hand in glove with the gangsters of the day. I imagine some of his antics would make a lot of modern rappers blush.

Regardless, I'd rather listen to my washing machine explode than Ol' Blue Eyes drone on, but I understand the appeal. Each to their own Grin

FuckNuggets · 01/04/2023 20:41

YANBU about modern rap, it's shite!

Male101 · 01/04/2023 20:41

curlykate99 · 01/04/2023 14:25

There's also anti gun rap... There's rap about most things tbh you just don't hear it on the radio.

Very surprised to see murs get a mention.

Pleasantly surprised

I didn’t know that about the gangsters!

He’s not my usual go to - but have had a busy day and he’s on in the background and I’m quite enjoying it

foxlover47 · 01/04/2023 20:47

@VeryApple I'm sure it won't stay that way for long 😅😅

He even said himself that if he hadn’t found his talent for music he probably would have ended up in crime… just like many rappers have said music helped them turn from crime/gave them a way out! And he was really the music of the working classes/the ‘Everyman’ music… just like rap music.

Its Not racist dislike a type of music. Dont know why race is always brought up. Cant we just like or dislike something without it being race thing

foxlover47 · 01/04/2023 20:55

@Male101 absolutely agree , there are white rappers too like we discussed so not sure how it's racism to hate a genre
