If a mum had a young child on a bus , say aged 3 - 5, for arguments' sake, and the mum got out a snack for the child - which was a sandwich box full of colourful, pre prepared salad - so loadsa lettuce, tomatoes finely chopped props and grated carrot etc - and the child ate it contentedly - - would an eyebrow be raised amongst the Mumsnet collective?

When the children were little, I didn't drive so they did need to eat on the bus. For example To make sure I was there in time for the swimming lesson I had to get the 3:15 bus straight from school. Officially there was also a bus at 3:30, and 345 that would get me there on time, but they were so often cancelled or delayed so long that I couldn't rely on them. In the summer we'd sometimes eat in the park when we got there, but in winter that was pretty miserable.
So dd used to eat on the bus.
I'd normally do something that was finger food though; sandwiches or similar.

However ds is 15yo. His idea of a perfect snack is a couple of raw carrots, half a dozen tomatoes, half a pepper and about a quarter of a cucumber. If he was packing a snack for the bus that's probably what he'd take along with a couple of apples and maybe a banana.
When he was a toddler he refused a packet of chocolate buttons to eat carrots.
I can assure anyone reading that this, that it is absolutely nothing to do with parenting or genetics.

It's a Gregg's sausage roll or nothing I'm afraid.

DD, is that you? You are supposed to be napping.

OP, I would just have an intense, irrational hatred for you born out of pure jealousy that your child ate salad. Or a sandwich, while my 2 and a half year old would act like Damien in a Church if I presented her with either despite all my efforts and who older children who will eat anything.

I'd think 'what a weird snack to offer a small child on a bus'. Anything else would depend on how the parent was behaving.

Why are you planning to feed a toddler a salad on a bus? Poor kid. I wouldn’t eat on a bus, why do you think it’s ok to shovel a salad in to a child on a dirty bus?

They're not eating the salad from the floor you know...

GalileoHumpkins · 31/03/2023 13:35

No one should be eating on a bus, that's why they have notices up. It's messy, stinky and unnecessary.

This.

If the salad went everywhere, I'd roll my eyes.

Someone brought a whole damn pizza on the train the other day. That was annoying and stinky.

butterfliedtwo · 31/03/2023 14:41

No eating in my view excludes diabetics and others with medical needs. Disclaimer.

Do you actually plan on explaining this thread?

whateverthisis · 31/03/2023 14:47

This is such a weird thread. Never heard of San Pellegrino being called Tory Tango before @moomoomoo27 Now can never drink it again.

Zwicky · 31/03/2023 14:48

I don’t think people should be eating anything more than a sweet on a bus tbh, unless it’s a national express type bus. But if it can’t be helped due to actual hunger then a salad seems an unnecessarily messy and calarifically pathetic choice. A non slidey sandwich (jam, pate, cream cheese) or bau or sticky rice balls or a banana would make more sense to me.

whatausername · 31/03/2023 14:51

I'd give no fucks - whether it is performative parenting or not I don't care. I prefer to let people be. Not that I'm esp nice, it's just energy tbh

Bookworm20 · 31/03/2023 14:52

Having never seen a toddler eating salad from a plastic pot with a spoon while sitting on a bus before, I'd probably take a second glance.

I'd be more bemused than judging I think. I mean how long is this bus journey? If my toddlers are anything to go by i'd be at least half an hour before any decent amount of salad would of made it to their mouth. And if using a spoon on a bumpy bus, how much actually WILL make it to their mouth.

Surely food for a little tot on a bus should be much less faffy. Something you can simply hand them from a bag, that requires no balancing of pots on tiny laps or plastic cutlery.

I would wonder why the mother couldn't give such a young child a healthy snack that was a lot easier for them to manage on the bus.

Carrot sticks, grapes, little tomatoes on their own, cheese cut into batons, pita cut into little strips, dried fruit. Many things

I don't think OP needs to , it was probably posted to see how it'd go. And it's going well, it's funny .

CremeEggQueen · 31/03/2023 14:56

I wouldn't give a crap, and anyway I'm usually oblivious to everyone else and off in my own little world somewhere 😁
Seriously, dont know why anyone would care?Long as they're not pinging carrot batons off the poor sod sat in front of them, all good 😁

Iloveautumncolours · 31/03/2023 13:01

I don’t see why anyone, child or otherwise needs to eat on public transport. If we all did it it would be like a mobile cafe. That aside I probably wouldn’t be happy if I were the driver or bus cleaner as a young child eating such a salad is bound to make a mess.

Awesome business idea

Deadringer · 31/03/2023 15:05

I would find it odd seeing someone eating on the bus and actually quite rude, unless it was a long journey. However I don't live in the UK where presumably this is acceptable. It sounds potentially very messy though.

Justalittlebitduckling · 31/03/2023 15:12

I think they should pick up any mess dropped on the floor and take it off the bus with them, but otherwise don’t see the problem.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/03/2023 15:15

I would be impressed if they could eat it without dropping it all down their front. I struggle to eat salad at home with a knife and fork and a fairly stable table to eat from. I would fail massively on a shoogly bus with a spoon.

Justforlaffs · 31/03/2023 15:17

I think buses are revolting and don't understand why anyone would eat on them unless it was an extremely long journey or they had some kind of medical condition.

Carrot/cucumber sticks would be ok but I think sat eating a Tupperware box of salad with a spoon/fork such as you've described would be a bit strange.

However I don't travel on buses so you don't need to worry about me judging you - I won't see it😂

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/03/2023 15:19

Wouldn't bother me . I don't like people eating McD's on bus due to the smell.

InSpainTheRain · 31/03/2023 15:21

I mind what ppl eat or feed their kids -.so no. I'd be I bit vom if you don't wipe their hands first though!

Ktime · 31/03/2023 15:22

and the child ate it contentedly - - would an eyebrow be raised amongst the Mumsnet collective?

How contentedly is the child eating? Children should be seen and not heard.
