Chasing a brown wheelie bin

This is a dull dull story. I ordered and paid for a brown garden waste bin from the council. They were incredibly efficient and it arrived three days later. Great ! Our house number was written on the top in permanent marker but I didn't have time to paint the number on the side, as bin collection day was two days later. On bin collection day I placed the bin outside with the other normal bins from a set of flats (for which we share a bin area).

That evening the bin was gone when I got home from work. I really enjoyed my brown bin for the two days I had it. I've had a good look round the surrounding roads and I couldn't see that it had been misplaced somewhere. Fine. I've ordered another from the council but now it's been weeks and weeks and I don't have the bin I've paid for. I've chased a few times. Do you think the council should just refund me for the garden waste service now ? I suspect that rather than being taken by someone else, the bin men actually didn't have me down for a brown bin at all (due to the swift delivery of bin) and took it back and now I am condemned never to have one?

Have you checked all your neighbours gardens in case they have yours?

You made a rookie mistake, you should have plastered your house number and road on the bin the day you got them.

Just tell the council you never received the bin.

I've had a good look yes. At one point I'm sure I triggered the neighbourhood watch. The number was on the top but not big enough clearly. I was planning to paint the number on the day after bin day !
