Is 4 and a half hours in an urgent treatment centre without being seen even for triage unreasonable for a 12 year old with a suspected broken foot? No pain relief, nothing and he's been crying and begging me for help for hours.....my blood is boiling but I just need a reality check before I decide whether to say something or not. Opinions please!

That update is horrendous. I think if it was me, I would take him home for a rest and painkillers, then get up early and go to A&E. It's awful that you and he have had this experience. Did they not give you any advice re looking after him till he can be seen?

AnyBenny · 29/03/2023 23:49

I was in A&E with a friend on Saturday evening with a broken arm and they gave him paracetamol and ibroprofen within about 20 minutes - it was given by a nurse who was waiting at reception so perhaps a sort of triage but literally took place standing at reception so def not a full assessment/examination. It didn’t really touch the sides and he had to wait 3 hours to be seen and given codeine, but it was definitely better than nothing, and he was very grateful.
The system where you are seems ludicrous. I hope he gets seen soon.

Smilethoughyourheartisaching · 29/03/2023 23:50

Ahh I’m so sorry. It’s not acceptable that you were not seen. Hope he is comfortable through the night. Take care. Try get some rest yourself x

Assume you ve been told to make sure circulation is ok and that sensation is intact ? I would keep an eye on that

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 29/03/2023 23:51

It's appalling and I am a RGN.

But for some reason people in Britain still say the nhs is the envy of the world!

Unfathomable we put up with this shirt while paying billions to it in taxes.

But clap clap clap

TheSnootiestFox · 29/03/2023 23:41

Right thank you all, academic now as we're going home for drugs and rest but how is that an acceptable wait for a child in pain? Anyone in pain come to that!

It's not acceptable at all. However, kicking off at the NHS staff would be misguided and unfair. They're as much victims of the tragic state of the NHS as your son is. Actually, they are more so because they have to endure this fiasco every single day. So if you do insist on kicking off, go and do it at the politicians who are actually responsible, not the healthcare workers who are trying there hardest against impossible odds.

Tillymintxx · 29/03/2023 23:51

I’m sorry but people are telling you to buy paracetamol from the shop?? I’m a nurse and midwife and used to work in a&e. It has ALWAYS been busy but pain relief is basic and I’m appalled that he hasn’t been given any. It’s so basic. yes we are all busy, but this still isn’t right

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 29/03/2023 23:52

Shit obviously

It's the top of the foot and ankle
Very puffy and a pocket of swelling to the top. Another 2 children fell on top of him during football, one was tackling the other and he got caught in the crossfire from what i can gather...school just said he'd had a fall.

From what you've described I think you're going to find it's an avulsion fracture.

My own ds has just done what sounds like the same sort of injury (his was from landing on someone else's foot in basketball and rolling his ankle.) We're not in the UK but he got to the ER at 10:00am and was seen/x-rayed by 11:05. He then had to hang around until 12:30pm because the ER doctor wanted to consult with the orthopedic surgeon, but still, that's pretty amazing service vs what I was used to from attending A&E in the UK when it was actually nowhere near as badly overstretched as it sounds like it is now.

Hopefully your DS gets seen ASAP and isn't left in pain too much longer Flowers

Snowythecatbitch · 29/03/2023 23:53

You need to kick off contrary to what some are saying you need to make yourself heard. I am the most polite person but I lost my shit when my mother was in complete agony and being ignored. You will be listened to if you shout loudest sometimes it needs to happen 🤷

Wedoronron · 29/03/2023 23:53

Yadnbu. Your poor son. It's awful. I hope he gets sorted soon.
Dh & I work for the NHS and it breaks my hear what is happening.
Anyone who has voted for the Conservatives or for Brexit, has to accept that they have made the situation worse by doing so.

Yes, a very terse nurse did as she was coming out to get another 111 patient. Academic now as we're home, but she said there was a shop down the road if I was that bothered!

How awful op, poor boy.

The way the Tories have run down the NHS so we all give up on it is a disgrace.

So he has crutches?

CobraChicken · 29/03/2023 23:57

TheSnootiestFox · 29/03/2023 23:42

Thank you x I asked about that at the UTC and was told I'd be waiting a minimum of 8 hours there so now I really don't know what to do!

Like I said, I'd be surprised if it wasn't fractured so I'd definitely take him to A&E. (Didn't read your OP properly so didn't realise that wasn't where you already were, sorry!)

The answer is don't vote Tory.
They want an end to the NHS.
My family would actually be much better off in an American system because we can afford to pay a lot for the best private care but I'd rather stay with an NHS where everyone is entitled to a level of care.
I'd just like that level of care to be timely and efficient for everyone.
I'm sorry your son has suffered. I dont think that shouting at the nurses would help at all though. They are already leaving the profession in droves and the ones who remain are really battling on.
Dont feel bad about not getting him pain relief sooner, recent research has shown that the effectiveness of paracetamol for pain relief is quite poor (except for uterine pain). So giving him that probably wouldn't have helped much anyway (except maybe as a placebo).

whynotwhatknot · 30/03/2023 00:03

i think that disgusting to make him wait then just shut like a bloody shop-i have tmost repsect for nurses doctors but thats not acceptable

hope hes ok
