But not too embarrassed to go to the papers. Terrible theatre etiquette. I read yesterday how badly FOH staff are treated. Every time I go, someone has their phone out / is filming / is singing. So annoying

REP22 · 29/03/2023 16:54

People like this are a nightmare in theatres. Absolutely selfish and unacceptable unless it is a performance intended for audience participation. Grossly disrespectful to the actors and other audience members too.

Just someone with a grain of talent

So it sounds like the play itself was shit. No wonder you left during the interval

This is ridiculous. It's a musical! Aren't you SUPPOSED to sing along in the aisles?

No you arent
Tickets are bloody expensive, I pay to watch and listen to professionals, not Dickheads

Categorically not. Unless it's billed as a singalong.

ethelredonagoodday · 29/03/2023 16:56

PuttingDownRoots · 29/03/2023 15:44

If you want to sing, you go to a Sing Along version.

I feel sorry for actors having to put up with that shit.

Yep. Totally, 100% this.

I bet the op is one of the party and trying to raise awareness in the misjudged expectation we would all be horrified on her behalf

got that wrong Op! 😂

Absolutely bloody not! Have had nights at theatre spoiled by similar people though to those in article unfortunately!

As a theatregoer, your only job at the theatre is to sit in your seat and watch the performers on stage. That's it.

Anything else is disrespectful the cast, orchestra, crew, FoH staff and your fellow audience members, it is completely arrogant. If you want a private performance where you can sing along to your heart's content then book and pay for one, don't spoil it for everyone else.

Singalongs/reprise/RH, etc, aside.

So…. Did you read your OP?

People pay a fortune for theatre tickets. You want to be able to focus on what’s going on, not some muppet next to you who is just having a laugh.

why do these people think that they have a right to ruin things for everyone else

This.

It was very disappointing. Had been looking forward to the performance for ages. Love the theatre, it’s a massive treat to go

MysteryBelle · 29/03/2023 17:04

PurpleEmpress · 29/03/2023 16:42

I would add to this debate, don’t ever go to the theatre and have the misfortune to be seated near or next to the party from the local stage school there to see one of their number on stage. Screaming, shouting and mayhem every time the precocious child came on stage. Add to that the one who draped his feet over the seat back in front of him next to my companion. This was a show in London, it was crap, we walked out in the interval

That is outrageous, wow. Don’t blame you for walking out.

GoatHeartedPieFacedOwl · 29/03/2023 17:05

What is it with MOPs wanting to sing in public? Every bus I get onto post Covid has a least one person who thinks it's OK to sing, hum, preach, or use a device with no headphones. WHAT IS WRONG THEM ALL!!? And if I'd paid to see a professional performance of anything at all I'd be enormously disappointed!

FictionalCharacter · 29/03/2023 17:06

Keeween · 29/03/2023 15:41

I think they’re full of shit and the stewards, and other theatregoers, would have a different story to telll.

Yep.

No, of course you are not. You're meant to enjoy the professional singing you have paid for.

potniatheron · 29/03/2023 15:40

This is ridiculous. It's a musical! Aren't you SUPPOSED to sing along in the aisles?

No. Book a sing-a-long if that’s what you want.

jaguar67 · 29/03/2023 17:11

Of course you don't sing-a-long or mime, or do anything to irritate other theatre-goers, cast or crew!

I feel for FOH staff, dealing with these entitled morons with no respect for the professionals on stage.

Theatre owners need to own this - first one to step up, I'm sure the rest will follow. It's not difficult to fix and starts with alcohol/ food sales pre-show and staffing levels.

Viviennemary · 29/03/2023 17:11

You need to sit in your seat and behave yourself. A fact those idiots don't seem to have grasped.

CoffeeWithCheese · 29/03/2023 17:13

MsFogi · 29/03/2023 16:09

This is why musicals will die a death over the coming years - people won't be willing to risk spending huge amounts of money to attend them because the risk is too high that you end up sitting near dick-heads who think they can sing along as though they are in the shower.

Went to an orchestra concert at the Royal Albert Hall last year (the Distant Worlds ones for those who know) and it was wrecked by some weapons grade morons who were singing along to music with no fucking vocal to it in the front row! They were so drunk you could get pissed on their fumes.

You may sing:
At the end when they do mega mix stuff
Rocky Horror Show
When commanded to by King George for the dad-da bits of "You'll be back" in Hamilton.

Florenz · 29/03/2023 17:13

Theatres need to crack down on unruly behaviour. Read a warning out at the start of the show, then if you break it, the play stops and you're escorted out, forcefully if necessary. Make an example a few times and the rest will get the message.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 29/03/2023 17:15

No miming, no running, no bombing, no heavy petting.

Just sit down and watch the show in a civilized manner.

potniatheron · 29/03/2023 15:40

Absolutely not!

Capreedan · 29/03/2023 17:17

People miming along and swaying in the seats is off putting for the actors on stage. They are trying to do a job and even with lights glaring at you you can still see movement in the audience.

It is also distracting for the audience who may be seated in a position that these arseholes are in their eye line. Also a ticket costs a small fortune so no one wants that spoiled.

I have a friend who is a front of house manager. People's behaviour has deteriorated since covid. It isn't a cinema, it is a live performance. I have been to some great sing along performances even ones where everyone dresses up, The Sound of Music was brilliant. As a whole unless the audience is specifically asked to participate you sit there and enjoy the professional singers.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/03/2023 17:17

We had a performance of The Lion King in Edinburgh ruined by stupid out of tune warblers. Can't believe people think it's okay to do this.

Not that it would be justified for anybody to do it, but it's never the decent singers who do it, is it?!

skyfalldown · 29/03/2023 17:18

I've been to the Edinburgh Playhouse many times and it's very tightly packed and you can see EVERYONE'S heads bobbing around. I'm tall, but due to the lack of slant on the seats, I can't see if you keep moving your head!

And funnily enough, at one performance I was at there were a couple of annoying drunk women directly in front of me doing exactly this and it drove me mental.

So they're BVVVVVU
