I can’t believe we are comparing a pop concert to a theatre production. Completely different experiences.

That’s why if you want the rowdy hen party version of Mamma Mia they have the party night at the O2 (not sure if similar things are available elsewhere) and the theatre version which is a performance

Maybe more of these jukebox type shows should have the interactive version in the same way as Mamma Mia The Party to let people get involved

I doubt Mazz Murray went to theatre school and experience years in shows to be outshone by Sharon and Tracey on a night out

Comefromaway · 30/03/2023 12:14

Totally off topic but Mazz Murray is a total QUEEN! She was fantastic when I saw her in We Will Rock You.

MadeofElephantStone · 30/03/2023 12:24

People like them is why I go to the theatre/cinema alone. The last time I went with friends/family to a musical, one of our group sang all the fucking songs I wished someone would have told her to STFU, I wasn't close enough to tell her myself! Why do people think you want to hear them sing over a professional performer who you've paid £60+ to see? Nah, they're selfish twats.

furryfrontbottom · 30/03/2023 12:59

What theatres need is a device that delivers a sharp electric shock to the offender's seat. I would love to be in the control booth.

Needmorelego · 30/03/2023 13:04

@furryfrontbottom ooh that's a good idea. Can we also have that on buses/trains too for when people watch stuff on their phones at full volume or have loud facetime calls.

JudgeRudy · 30/03/2023 13:08

potniatheron · 29/03/2023 15:40

This is ridiculous. It's a musical! Aren't you SUPPOSED to sing along in the aisles?

Go on I'll bite.....No, you're not, with 2 exceptions...The Rocky Horror Show and maybe Mama Mia. These shows are often billed as 'interactive'. I'd no more expect or want you to sing in a theatre than a restaurant.

Everanewbie · 30/03/2023 13:18

People just don't like being 'told' do they?!?!?

Mamma Mia is NOT billed as interactive. unless you mean the party thing which is totally separate from the stage show.

Villssev · 30/03/2023 14:26

At pop concerts the singers usually massively hype the audience to actively get them singing.
they even hold up the microphones to the audience

daft and desperate analogy to compare a musical with a pop concert

One for hyperbole aren’t you?! 😂

Last three west end shows I have seen (2 musicals and one drama) were brilliant and no inconsiderate singing or crisp rustling

Comefromaway · 30/03/2023 14:33

I'd actually say the opposite. Expensive ticket prices lead people to think they have the right to behave as they wish because they have paid for it. The worst behaved patrons are often the ones in the more expensive seats or who have paid for the private lounge areas etc.

Genuine theatre lovers are being priced out.

They look to me like those dentally challenged gurning lopsided double-breasted stuffed cardigans who go to Last Night of the Proms and wave flags.

Embarrassingly middle class & “participating” in the most cringe inducing way.

Love it!! Make a big racket and disturb everybody around you - you'll soon experience your own arse-shock life Grin

Sirius3030 · 30/03/2023 10:03

No. No you are not.

We saw We Will Rock You years ago at the Edinburgh Playhouse and the only time the audience joined is was at the end for We Are The Champions, egged on by the cast if I remember correctly.

Comefromaway · 30/03/2023 15:01

yes, Galilieo shouts out Let Me Hear You to the audience.

I hope Distant Worlds was amazing other than that weapons grade tool. Always wanted to go to that!

Oh yes Distant Worlds was amazing (always is - we usually go) but this bunch trying to sing along to orchestral instrumental songs was absolutely bloody painful! Generally it's such a nice atmosphere one to go along to (along with so much wonderful wonderful merch to spend your entire finances on) with the mix of cosplayers and people just completely geeking the hell out.

With the cost of theatre tickets I would be REALLY fucked off being stuck next to a sing-a-long crew - but I have a bit of a fondness for seeing Hamilton and that's fucking painfully expensive so I'd be really annoyed! I tend to avoid the typical "girls night out" suspects (like Dirty Dancing and Mamma Mia) because my dickhead tolerance threshold is low these days. I'm holding off taking the kids to shows because I know DD2 wouldn't quite be able to process and stick to not singing along through the entire thing and contain it to the relevant bits - and I'd not enjoy having to constantly remind her.

Comefromaway · 30/03/2023 15:23

Everybody - da da da da daaaa
Da da da da diye ya da

is allowed mind!

Err no. Of course not! WTF did you get that idea from? 😳

MaggieMagpie1 · 30/03/2023 17:29

@comefromaway

only after 'Everybody' though. Wouldn't wanna upset the King! 😁

Sorry - joke spoiled by not reading a post properly!

Catspyjamas17 · 30/03/2023 10:11

I wouldn't be so sure. I'm not sure theatres know what audiences want - audience numbers have fallen and not returned after 2020.

It's the prices. Only the prices. Which is why you get people going to shows determined to live the experience to its fullest and sing along whenever they want, because they think they deserve to enjoy it however they like seeing as they've paid so much.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/03/2023 22:02

I went to the theatre for the first time in years the other week and I was bent double in my seat. Even my friend who is only 5'1" complained about very little, cramped leg room.

Regardless of the show, I won't be bothering to go to any historic theatre again, however beautiful they are to look at and however silent the other audience members promise to be!

Rosula · 30/03/2023 22:07

dottiedodah · 30/03/2023 10:11

While I understand the venues point.I think its a shame if people cant show their enjoyment at a show like this.I mean not singing obv ,but a little swaying surely? If everyone is just sitting then its not as much fun! I say this as at a Riverdance show I attended ,at 5ft 0 was placed behind a Greg Davies lookalike and had to move from side to side to see anything!

If you just want to watch the show, it would still be incredibly distracting and annoying having people in front of you swaying. And where do you draw the line? What if they want to do jazz hands, or put their hands in the air? Is there a maximum permitted angle of sway?
