To let 10 year old watch 'The Others'

Hi all

My 10 year old is off school ill. She is horror crazy, has watched and read all the goosebumps stuff, has read point horror. She watched See for Me the other day and wasn't phased, she watched Miss Peregrine on Monday and wasn't remotely bothered by it. Today is her last day off unwell and she wants to watch The Others, The Sixth Sense or Poltergeist. After much frantic googling The Others seems the least scary.

What does everyone think? I don't want to scare her shitless - she really doesn't scare easily but I don't want to go too far. Have already vetoed loads of films including Birdbox.

Many thanks!

I'd be ok with The Others but not the other films you've mentioned.

Eyerollcentral · 29/03/2023 12:52

For goodness sake wise up. She is 10. No is a complete sentence.

JoanJettsMullet · 29/03/2023 12:52

The Others terrified me and I watched as a teen! All three are quite scary imo.

GalileoHumpkins · 29/03/2023 12:53

The Others is very creepy, not suitable for a 10 year old at all.

HealthyFats · 29/03/2023 12:55

https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/the-others Have you read this?

I would say it's too old for her, sorry. It's genuinely spooky and disturbing, nothing like Miss P or Goosebumps. Great film though and I think 12 would be ok.

How about a different Tim Burton like Corpse Bride?

The Others Movie Review

Good but creepy; may be too intense for some. Read Common Sense Media's The Others review, age rating, and parents guide.

If it's the original Poltergeist do you really want her to watch someone's face falling off in graphic detail?
Of all the films you've mentioned Birdbox is the least scary.

Skinnermarink · 29/03/2023 12:56

You can say no. She’s ten. If you aren’t comfortable jetting her watch it, don’t. She’s not holding a gun to your head.

IamMoiraRose · 29/03/2023 12:57

Mine loved Are you afraid of the dark, loads of episodes on YouTube

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 29/03/2023 12:58

It's tricky isn't it?

DD is 15 and had watched Walking Dead, The Turning, The Boy and a few other haunting type films. No problem,

We then watched Paranormal Activity and all was good until the main character is googling images of an exorcism and those pictures freaked her out immediately. We had to turn it off and she slept in with me that night Confused Lesson learned.

I watched The Others in my 30s, and had to walk up the stairs to bed with my back pressed against the wall for a week. It disturbed me. But then, since having DCs, I have become scared of 'everything'.

Sixth Sense was so well known by the time I watched it, that there was no shock. That didn't bother me nearly as much.

I haven't actually watched any 'proper' horror, like Poltergeist and I'm in my 50s.
I wouldn't let my 13 year old watch it, although my now adult son was never bothered. He actually had the 'Saw' doll on a trike, and I wouldn't even go in his room, for fear of it.

Admittedly, I'm probably wussier than most.
You know your daughter.

Lovingitallnow · 29/03/2023 13:01

Oh my god I still think of the Victorian death portraits she finds in the others. And I watched it probably 20 years ago? Was it out then?

ImAGoodPerson · 29/03/2023 13:05

I found The Others more scary than The Sixth Sense, my DS watched TSS at around 10 and enjoyed it, the story is really good, i think they are 12A rated so not unreasonable. Poltergeist is an actual horror isn't it? I don't think even I would like it.

Both my DCs are teens now and they love horror films, they have never really been scared of films at all, my DH and brother love them too so I take guidance from them as they will watch things first to help decide if suitable.

stargirl1701 · 29/03/2023 13:05

How about some classic Hitchcock? I loved The Birds.

Flamingolip · 29/03/2023 13:11

How about the movie The Innocents (1961)? It’s based on The Turn of The Screw. It’s really creepy but probably not too scary for a 10 yo (if she doesn’t mind it being in black and white/old)

HealthyFats · 29/03/2023 13:12

Coraline?

Brieandbeetroot · 29/03/2023 13:15

I think some of the underlying themes of The Others make it inappropriate for a 10 year old, rather than simply the horror/scariness of it. I won't say what because I don't want to spoil the plot.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 29/03/2023 13:17

I saw The Others when it came out and I was 11. Loved it. Still one of my fav films. I don't think it's scary at all, a bit creepy but no jumps or scary visuals.

My parents were horror fanatics so started watching things like Psycho, Kujo, Christine, Carrie (notice a theme?) as well as poltergeist, the exorcist, Amityville etc from around 10/11 years old.

My dad always gave me a choice to go to bed or stay up and watch but if I wanted to watch I had to be ready to be scared and I couldn't spoil it for anyone else. If it was too much and hiding behind my hand wasn't enough, I'd go to bed.

Zhougzhoug · 29/03/2023 13:18

Time to get her into Doctor Who I think - try the episode Blink (it's a standalone so you don't really need to know who the characters are beyond the basics)

IrishGothic · 29/03/2023 13:20

My DS is ten and there's no way I'd let him watch The Others, based on his personality. Once you've let a young child watch something that frightens them, even if you personally think it's less 'scary' than other films they've watched with no obvious ill effects, it's too late to rectify, and your child has been left with a new set of ineradicable frightening images, potentially disrupted sleep, fear of dark, being alone etc.

Notegoat · 29/03/2023 13:26

I’m not a stickler for age ratings but I’m surprised that you’ve already let your 10 year old DD watch a 15.

Skinnermarink · 29/03/2023 13:26

There are definitely jumps in the Others. What about the wardrobe scene with the lady in the shawl?

Notegoat · 29/03/2023 13:27

’My dad always gave me a choice to go to bed or stay up and watch but if I wanted to watch I had to be ready to be scared and I couldn't spoil it for anyone else. If it was too much and hiding behind my hand wasn't enough, I'd go to bed’

That’s some stellar parenting.

Aye he wasn't the best at times...

So1invictus · 29/03/2023 13:32

The Others is just a bit dull till the ta-da moment tbh. I'd be more concerned a 10 year old would lose interest.

moggerhanger · 29/03/2023 13:36

What about the classic Dracula with Bela Lugosi?
