To let 10 year old watch 'The Others'

Hi all

My 10 year old is off school ill. She is horror crazy, has watched and read all the goosebumps stuff, has read point horror. She watched See for Me the other day and wasn't phased, she watched Miss Peregrine on Monday and wasn't remotely bothered by it. Today is her last day off unwell and she wants to watch The Others, The Sixth Sense or Poltergeist. After much frantic googling The Others seems the least scary.

What does everyone think? I don't want to scare her shitless - she really doesn't scare easily but I don't want to go too far. Have already vetoed loads of films including Birdbox.

Many thanks!

I reccomend The 'Burbs. I love that film

bingoitsadingo · 29/03/2023 13:37

I watched it age 10/11 and found it ok - scary but I was totally fine afterward. Fond memories of it being my first adult/scary film! It was on a sleepover with friends though so I don’t know if that made a difference

Bigpinktrain · 29/03/2023 13:43

The issue is that a lot of horror also comes hand in hand with awful sex scenes.

Have you watched a horror/action like Alien?

HealthyFats · 29/03/2023 13:12

Coraline?

Oh god that's another that terrified her. It was the Other Mother and taking the eyes that did it! Tbf it's quite freaky.

We have watched it together recently and she quite enjoyed it especially the cat Smile

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 29/03/2023 13:49

Paranorman however is amazing

Figgygal · 29/03/2023 13:51

What about the house with the clock in its walls instead?

beastlyslumber · 29/03/2023 13:52

Wednesday. It's on Netflix.

catfoodcatastrophe · 29/03/2023 13:56

Thanks all. We won't watch it. The house with clock in wall would be perfect but we can't get youtube on the TV ☹️ she has seen Wednesday. Will have a look at all the other suggestions 🙂 also looking at Run and Come Play as they don't look too scary. Have looked a lot at common sense media but they seem to take a very reserved approach, for example they rate some 15's as suitable for 17 plus

Look for The Turn of the Screw or other films by the same author.

dottiedodah · 29/03/2023 14:12

I would be scared by all 3! Always been a massive wimp and nothing changed even now over 50! What about Goose Bumps or something like that? She probably says shes not scared but maybe change her mind at bedtime!

lemonyellows · 29/03/2023 14:35

How about We have a ghost or Lockwood on Netflix? 12 rated.

Nalupa · 29/03/2023 14:56

Isn't it a 12 rating in the UK? DD is 7 and watched Wednesday and that's a 12... But Wednesday isn't really a "horror" so I guess it's slightly different. You know if it would scare her or not. She is only 2 years away from 12 do I think it would be fine... Horror films are meant to scare you a bit anyway. I saw The Ring before I was 15 and it terrified me but not in a traumatic way.

hippygirllucky · 29/03/2023 14:59

I was that age when I watched it. Loved it. Hasn't done me any harm.

My friends kid is 4 and loves the Walking Dead.

Eranzer · 29/03/2023 15:00

Meh, I'd say they're all fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Geneticsbunny · 29/03/2023 15:03

Lockwood on Netflix is brilliant. Also another vote for the blink episode of Dr who.

DannyZukosSmile · 29/03/2023 15:04

No. YABU.

Killingmytime · 29/03/2023 18:08

You know your child. I was not remotely fazed by horror or slasher films as a child.
id watched all the friday/candyman/halloween/poltergeist films ( so had my friends and dp)
Old horror isn’t like new, no where near as gory.
the others isn’t scary, just creepy in places.

catfoodcatastrophe · 29/03/2023 18:36

We watched Come Play in the end and she wasn't at all bothered by it. I think my husband and I were more bothered than her, maybe she's just a psychopath!

Your DD sounds like the type of 10 year old I once was.

The only thing about The Others that got to Me (though watched as an adult, granted) was the scene with the Book of the Dead. The photos used are real photos and it was just unexpected on my first watch, creepily so.

She seems to have good taste as I watched Miss Peregrine (and read the book) but again, as an adult.

Other than that though I would say its Ok. Second choice The Sixth Sense (has some jump scares) but not so sure about Poltergeist for DD

Lovingitallnow · 29/03/2023 13:01

Oh my god I still think of the Victorian death portraits she finds in the others. And I watched it probably 20 years ago? Was it out then?

Terrified Me.. That one and only scene out of the whole film

The Others was released in 2001

Brieandbeetroot · 29/03/2023 13:15

I think some of the underlying themes of The Others make it inappropriate for a 10 year old, rather than simply the horror/scariness of it. I won't say what because I don't want to spoil the plot.

I agree, it was also very, very, sad.

Your friend is a bad parent.

CockPits · 29/03/2023 18:50

I’d let her watch them but then I was watching proper horror films at 8 years old. I was never phased and still yet to watch a movie that scares me. The only one that came close was Final destination but that’s probably because I was mid flight whilst watching it 😂

CockPits · 29/03/2023 18:52

I agree that The Others is more sad than scary. Very atmospheric though, I love it

defi · 29/03/2023 18:52

I loved watching horrors as a teen. Find them abit cringy as an adult. What about coralline, watership down, return to oz?
