To let 10 year old watch 'The Others'

Hi all

My 10 year old is off school ill. She is horror crazy, has watched and read all the goosebumps stuff, has read point horror. She watched See for Me the other day and wasn't phased, she watched Miss Peregrine on Monday and wasn't remotely bothered by it. Today is her last day off unwell and she wants to watch The Others, The Sixth Sense or Poltergeist. After much frantic googling The Others seems the least scary.

What does everyone think? I don't want to scare her shitless - she really doesn't scare easily but I don't want to go too far. Have already vetoed loads of films including Birdbox.

Many thanks!

No I made this exact mistake with a 10year old, although it did 'cure' her of wanting to watch horrors for several years

I saw The Others at 10 and I loved it so much, I put it on again straight after. If she's not seen Coraline, that's a really creepy cartoon (far creepier than Corpse Bride) but also has a great story. 10/10 would recommend.

I love The Others but I think the themes are too dark for a ten year old. She would get far more from it when she's a but older as the emotional themes are what give it its power.

I remember being about eight and my mum letting me watch poltergeist (in the 80s) - looking back I think she was probably too scared to watch it alone! I was not bothered at all at the time, but I wouldn't watch it now! I can't remember the Others but don't think there's much horror in it, in Sixth Sense there are the hanging people which is too old for her.

We were shown The Others when I was about 12 at school and it traumatised me for life. I had to sleep in my parents' room for weeks.

I saw it around 9 with a friend on a sleepover. Scared me for a couple of years and now I'm in my 20's it's put me off horror films for life.

I definitely found The Others scarier than The Sixth Sense. I'm a little biased as The Others was the film I watched too young that really freaked me out as a kid. She might be better with it than I was if she's horror mad, but I wouldn't personally.

The Others is properly creepy. I wouldn't.

We did and all fine. Depends on the DC though obv. Use your own judgement.

I found The Others quite creepy! It's a clever film. DS was in to horror etc at that age and not easily frightened at all, but I wouldn't have let him watch The Others.

Poltergeist would probably not be that scary now, many of the old horrors aren’t because the effects are so dated. I remember watching The Exorcist when I was about 11 and thinking it was not scary, more silly because it all looked clearly fake.

The Others is a little scary for 10 but you know your child.
