To think there’s nothing wrong with frozen veg??

My mum is a real snob when it comes to food. She doesn’t even own a freezer, everything his homegrown and cooked from scratch. Which is lovely but I’m a busy student nurse, my husband is a chef and we have 2 young children so a lot of nights we need something quick and easy. I do Cook a lot from scratch but sometimes find it easier to bung a steam in the bag beg medley in the microwave. My mum FaceTimes the kids a few times a weeks and always makes comments on what they’re eating but today she’s made comments about frozen veg being muck and you couldn’t pay her to eat it. I just told her to fuck off and hung up I really can’t be assed with it today.

Aibu or is she being a twat? It’s literally just broccoli, carrot and cauliflower that I’ve added to a tuna pasta bake to add some veg in!

Nope. Most of the veg I cook with and give my kids is frozen. Growing your own veg is lovely if you're able to do it, but not everyone can or wants to.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 28/03/2023 17:21

Nothing wrong with it. Infact it keeps nutrition longer

AitchPeeVee · 28/03/2023 17:22

This is the second, maybe third, thread today asking this exact question. Same answer - it’s fine.

LlamaFace19 · 28/03/2023 17:23

And I'm pretty sure I've read that frozen veg is actually better for you than fresh? Freezing 'locks in' nutrients or something along those lines. Either way there is nothing wrong with frozen veg.

123wentaway · 28/03/2023 17:27

Commercially frozen vegetables are frozen within hours of picking so keep a high % of their nutrients.
I like growing veg and cooking from scratch but only now I’m retired and have the time.

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/03/2023 17:35

How does she know it’s frozen? If you know she’s going to be judgemental, I wouldn’t tell her in the first place. Nobody can look at a pasta bake (or indeed any other meal) over FaceTime and know whether the vegetables in it were fresh or frozen.

Gingergirl70 · 28/03/2023 17:39

Ask her to stop facetiming while you're all trying to have tea.or just tell kids they're not allowed on phones/facetious during meal times so they don't answer her calls during that time.
But you don't need our advice or help really, you done completely right thing by telling her to fuck off

Hankunamatata · 28/03/2023 17:47

I moved over to frozen veg for anything like stew, bake, casserole, curry. Saves on so much chopping.

meatyryvita · 28/03/2023 17:51

We use frozen veg quite a lot actually due to the reduction in food waste. We used to have various things turning to mush in the fridge if I didn't spot them in time and so now don't have to worry about that so much. It's frozen very quickly and I've never noticed a quality issue.

Cleethorpes · 28/03/2023 17:53

I know a number of people who grow their own, delicious fruit and veg. They all freeze their excess harvests so that they can enjoy it throughout the year. Before today, I had no idea that anyone thought badly of frozen veg. Every day is a school day...

Ringmaster27 · 28/03/2023 17:53

Most of the veg I use is frozen.
I’m not wasting money on fresh produce that then has potential to go to waste just rotting in the fridge before it’s used up.
And then there’s the thing about frozen veg retaining more nutrients than fresh because it’s frozen very quickly after being picked? I don’t know how accurate that is, but I’ll go with it 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

SaySomethingMan · 28/03/2023 17:53

I don’t know how telling her to f off was your go to tbh

Klunt · 28/03/2023 18:33

She FaceTimed while I was making it, I was chatting to her about our plans at the weekend.

I like frozen peas and green beans.

I think frozen carrots are the devils work. Dont like frozen broccoli or cauliflower either.

FinallyHere · 28/03/2023 19:18

Frozen veg is always going to be less nutritious than something cooked and eaten within minutes of being picked from a nearby garden.

It's got to be better than anything 'fresh' which has been through a supermarket distribution system.

I wouldn't have any time for anyone who expressed your mother's opinion.

Lucyccfc68 · 28/03/2023 19:22

Frozen peas are fine, but I haven’t liked any other frozen veg. I love my veg ‘just’ cooked, so that you still get a bit of a crunch to it. Frozen veg is too soggy for me.

I can understand people using it for stew or something similar though.

BettyOBarley · 28/03/2023 19:22

Of course there's nothing wrong with frozen veg!

Have to agree with a pp though that some of it doesn't taste good - peas/sweetcorn/green beans/peppers/onion/sprouts - fine

Carrots/brocolli/cauliflower always just taste soggy to me.

GrumpyPanda · 28/03/2023 19:38

I tend not to use much frozen veg because it's less versatile in cooking due to the water content. A lot of taste develops if you begin by sautéing the veg and that's just not possible with frozen. I have no issue adding some at a later stage, say for a risotto or minestrone/other soup. But of course you'll still get all the nutrients and likely economise on food waste.

TonTonMacoute · 28/03/2023 19:40

Of course not, the woman's being ridiculous.

I freeze the veg I grow, if I have a surplus!

AspiringMermaid · 28/03/2023 19:41

There is nothing wrong with frozen veg, studies show some frozen fruit/ veg, lose certain micro nutrients, other micro nutrients are slightly increased, but when adding to a varied diet it's really splitting hairs! Also as a chef studying nutrition I batch cook and vac pack a ton of food. Saves time and money, frozen food does not equal unhealthy

Everydayimhuffling · 28/03/2023 19:42

What does she do with excess harvest if she's growing her own? Surely she must preserve some of it? Why is that different?

I sometimes don't like the texture of formally frozen veg, depending on the vegetable, but it's nutritionally sound. She's being ridiculous

Fluffodils · 28/03/2023 19:42

Frozen veg is better than the "fresh" stuff from the super market. Less wastage too.

Lcb123 · 28/03/2023 19:43

Of course it’s just as good if not better for you, cheaper, reduced food waste.

Comedycook · 28/03/2023 19:45

Some veg is awful frozen like broccoli and some is nicer like peas. But that's just my personal taste. She's being ridiculous

Perfect28 · 28/03/2023 19:46

Freezing is literally just a storage/preservation process. Have you asked what her objections are? Does she use a fridge?
