To think there’s nothing wrong with frozen veg??

My mum is a real snob when it comes to food. She doesn’t even own a freezer, everything his homegrown and cooked from scratch. Which is lovely but I’m a busy student nurse, my husband is a chef and we have 2 young children so a lot of nights we need something quick and easy. I do Cook a lot from scratch but sometimes find it easier to bung a steam in the bag beg medley in the microwave. My mum FaceTimes the kids a few times a weeks and always makes comments on what they’re eating but today she’s made comments about frozen veg being muck and you couldn’t pay her to eat it. I just told her to fuck off and hung up I really can’t be assed with it today.

Aibu or is she being a twat? It’s literally just broccoli, carrot and cauliflower that I’ve added to a tuna pasta bake to add some veg in!

YANBU. There is nothing wrong with frozen veg. Most of mine is!

Mostar · 30/03/2023 10:07

Nothing wrong with frozen veg. Also, bags of frozen peas work well as emergency ice packs for bumps and bruises. Can't do that with a fresh cauliflower.

I have personally tested fresh, stored and frozen veg, and can confirm that there are frequently more vitamins preserved in frozen veg than in stored veg. Freshly picked veg trumps both, but realistically, how much of the veg on our plate was picked that day?

She doesn’t even own a freezer, everything his homegrown and cooked from scratch.

As someone who homegrows lots and cooks from scratch, I don't understand how she is without freezer.

DangerNoodles · 30/03/2023 10:25

I can't stomach frozen veg other than peas, it has totally different texture and flavour. Plus more 'off' bits end up in frozen veg, like black bits of carrot, brown bits of sweetcorn etc.
If my kids ate it I probably would buy it more for convenience, but they won't and I don't force them to eat something I wouldn't eat myself.

Frozen veg is fine and definitely cuts down on food waste with young DC. I find they often prefer the softer texture.

Don't let your mum Facetime during preparing or eating meals. Hang up on her if she brings it up at other times.

Not keen on frozen carrots and frozen peas go cold way too quickly but everything else is fine for me

What, quicker than fresh peas? Don't all peas go cold at the same rate?

MrsClatterbuck · 22/10/2023 00:28

I use a lot of frozen veg except carrots which I do buy fresh. Dh doesn't like broccoli so I buy a bag of frozen. A head of fresh broccoli would be a total waste.

Airyfairy99 · 22/10/2023 00:31

Its awful. Watery , soggy and horrible.........sorry i hate frozen veg , fresh is best taste wise

Airyfairy99 · 22/10/2023 00:33

Only frozen veg worth eating is peas as they go starchy when fresh. Every chef i know /dont know (tv chefs) ALWAYS say use frozen peas as much more flavour. Only frozen veg i use.

Hedgehogtunnel · 22/10/2023 00:40

Isn't frozen meant to have more vitamins etc.?

rainbowsparkle28 · 22/10/2023 00:55

Absolutely fine and as others have said supposedly keeps the nutritients in better as frozen when freshly picked. I love frozen veg as someone who lives by myself both for cost, ease of no cutting and simple cooking (!) and minimising food waste given one person is not going to always get through a load of veg, why wouldn't I? Does she not have anything more pressing in the world to worry about?! 😅

MrsHughesPinny · 22/10/2023 00:56

Nutritionally, it’s great. As an eating experience though…not my favourite. I prefer to eat my vegetables al dente and I’ve yet to find a way of preparing frozen vegetables where they still have that bite without them still being cold. They seem to take on a bit of a spongy texture. I wish I liked them more because they’d save me a ton of time!

junbean · 22/10/2023 00:59

It's a scientific fact frozen veg are just as good as fresh, if not better as they are flash frozen at the perfect ripeness. Of course garden fresh is amazing but it's ridiculous and rude to make comments like that.

RogueFemale · 22/10/2023 01:07

Nothing wrong with frozen veg, just as nutritious, but very very limited range. There's no spring greens, cabbage, asparagus, tenderstem broccoli, etc. Frozen carrots and spinach are pretty awful (though maybe just as nutritious).

Caiti19 · 22/10/2023 02:34

Does your Mother have any idea of the chemicals employed to keep vegetables looking "fresh" for sale? It's a con.

Of course homegrown is optimal, but how many people have the headspace and time for farming!?

She shouldn't be passing comments on any of your parenting decisions, unless invited to do so.
